(Cl. 30210) This invention relates to hair clippers of the adjustable type, and in particular a clipper in which cutting elements extend from the end of a handle and in which a lower clipper plate is laterally adjustable in relation to a reciprocating clipper plate whereby the device is readily adjustable to cut hair to different lengths.

The purpose of this invention is to provide an adjustable hair clipper wherein the relative positions of the'clipper plates are adjustable as -the clipper is used.

Various types of attachments have been used in .combination with hair clippers to facilitate grading or graduating the hair, however, such devices have not been suc.- cessful because they interfere with the conventional operation of the clipper. With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates an adjustable hair clipper wherein clipper plates extended from the end of a handle are readily adjusted by a thumb screw on one side of the handle so that the parts may be adjusted to cut hair at dilerent lengths as the cutting progresses.

The object of this invention is, therefore, lto provide means for mounting clipper plates in a handle whereby one plate is readily adjustable'in relation -to another to regulate the length of hair cut by the clipper.

Another object of the invention is to prVideanjmproved Vhair clipper in which the cutting .elementsare adwith conventional operation of the clipper.

A further object of the invention is -to provide a hair "if clipper having adjustable clipper plates extended from the end of a handle in which the clipper is of a comparatively simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in View the invention embodies a handle having reciprocating means therein, a lower clipper plate mounted for lateral movement in the handle, a thumb screw for adjusting the position of the lower clipper plate, an upper clipper plate slidably mounted on the lower clipper plate and operatively connected to said reciprocating means in the handle and a spring guard mounted in the handle and extended over said upper clipper plate for retaining the upper clipper plate in cutting relation tothe lower clipper plate.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with `the drawing, wherein:

v :Referring'now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved adjustable .barbers shear of vthis invention includes a lower stationary, though laterally adjustable .clipper plate 10, an upper reciproca'ble-clipper plate 11, a spring element 12 `having slots 40providing a vguide for the upper clipper plate, an adjusting screw 13, a handle 14 in which the parts are mounted, a motor yincluding a solenoid 15 and a core plate 16, and a bell crank 17 for operatively conneeting the :motor tothe reciprocating upper clipper plate 11.

The lower clipper plate 10 is provided with comb or cutting teeth 18 :andz19 in opposite edges, a transversely disposed bar 2.0 having a slot 21 therein at the outer end in which an -zend 22 of said .element guide 12 is posiderlei-'extensions .-23 and 24 `at the opposite ends of the comb teeth, transversely .positioned bars 25 and .26, and a transverse threaded opening 27 in ywhich the adjusting vscrew 13..is threaded.

,The upper clipper slide 11, which is provided with an Qifsatend 30'on which a pin 31 that extends into a yoke 3- 2fof the -bell 'crank 17 is positioned, is also provided with cutting yteethl 33and .34, with a bar 35 at the outer end withprojections 36 .and `3.7 at .the inner ends of the teeth. 38 and 39 that are .positioned to extend into elongated slots 40 and 41 in the spring guide 12 and, as the clipper is reciprocated by the motor, the pins travel longitudinally inthe slots thus retaining the upper clipper plate in lixed relation to the center line of the handle.

The spring guide 12 is provided with a substantially U-shaped section 42 at its inner end, and said guide is secured in position by screws 43 and 44, that extend through anges 45 and 46 which extend from the section 42 The guide 12 is provided with an upwardly bowed sec tion 47 that is positioned to be engaged by an adjusting screw 48 whereby tension against the upper clipper plate is adjustable. The upper clipper plate is also provided with a recess 49, in the under surface whereby the points of contact of the upper clipper plate with the lower clipper plate are at the sides of the plates.

The bell crank 17 is mounted by a spring 50 on one end of a bracket 510 in which the solenoid 15 of the motor is mounted and with the bell crank 17 mounted in this manner the yoke 32 will reciprocate theV upper clipper plate as the core plate 16, which may be formed of iron or the like, is drawn toward the core of the solenoid and released, by conventional means. 51 and 52 of a cable 53 that extends through an opening in a head 54 at the end of the handle.

With the parts formed in this manner current supplied to the motor in the handle of the shear actuates the crank 17 whereby the upper clipper plate is reciprocated longitudinally of the lower clipper plate and to change the number of hairs cut by the clipper the lower clipper plate is moved laterally by the adjusting screw 13 whereby hair may be cut comparatively close to the scalp such as with a triple-O clipper, and with one side of the clipper set to cut the hair close to the scalp the opposite side is set to cut hair further from the scalp.

The device is adapted to be adjusted whereby short or long hair may be cut by either side so that the device is adapted to be used by either a right hand or a left hand barber.

The handle 14 is provided with a removable base 55 which is attached to the handle with screws 56, and, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the clipper plates are mounted on the base. The base is provided with a projection 57 at one side that forms a bearing for the adjusting screw 13, and a collar 58, positioned at the inner end of the bearing 57 retains the screw in position. With the screw kextendedthrough the threaded opening 27 of the lower clipper plate the plate is readily adjusted laterally, and when it is desired to remove the lower clipper plate the screw is rotated until the plate runs off of the end of the screw.

lt will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is, claimed is:

1. A hair clipper comprising a handle, a lower clipper plate having teeth in the edges thereof extended from one end of the handle, an upper clipper plate having teeth in the edges thereof extended from said end and posi# tioned to slide longitudinally on said lower clipper plate whereby the teeth thereof coact with the teeth of the lower clipper plate for shearing, means for retaining the upper clipper plate in alignment with said handle, means adjusting said lower clipper plate, a motor in said handle, and means operatively connecting said motor to the upper clipper plate for longitudinally reciprocating said upper clipper plate on the lower clipper plate, said means for retaining the upper clipper plate in alignment with the handle also providing means for resiliently urging said upper clipper plate against the lower clipper plate.

2. In a hair clipper, the combination which comprises a handle, a lower clipper plate mounted to slide laterally in said handle and extended from one end thereof, an adjusting screw in the handle for adjusting the position of said lower clipper plate laterally in the handle, an upper clipper plate mounted to reciprocate longitudinally on said lower clipper plate, a motor in the handle, means operatively connecting the motor to said upper clipper plate, a spring guide mounted in the handle and extended over said upper clipper plate, means connecting said upper clipper plate to said spring guide for retaining the upper clipper plate in alignment with the handle, said spring guide being shaped to resiliently urge the upper clipper plate against the lower clipper plate, and means for adjusting the tension of said spring guide. 3. 1n a hair clipper, the combination which comprises ahandle, a lower clipper plate mounted to slide laterally in said handle and extended from one end thereof, an adjusting screw in the handle for adjusting the position of said lower clipper plate laterally in the handle, an upper clipper plate mounted to reciprocate longitudinally on said lower clipper plate, a motor in the handle, means operatively connecting the motor to said upper clipper plate, a spring guide mounted in the handle and extended over said upper clipper plate, means connecting said upper clipper plate to said spring guide for retaining `the upper clipper plate in alignment with the handle, said spring guide being shaped to resiliently urge the upper'clipper plate against the lower clipper plate, and means forV adjusting the tension of said spring guide, said lower clipper plate having a transversely disposed slot in the extended end and said spring guide having a portion on the end extended into the said slot in the end of the lower clipper plate.
