AIR=COOLINIG APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,716, dated February 6, 1883,
Application filed April 24, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN KROPFF, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Air-Cooling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for cooling air in large quantities in a very effective manner by a combination of surface-cooling and spray-cooling; and the invention consists of a combination of devices, as set forth in the claims.
The refrigerating-liquid isadmitted by a pipe to the lower part of the space surrounding the air-channels, rises therein to a level with the upper edge of the same, and is shed in a thin sheet pver the inner surface of the air-chanpels and dropped in theform ofa spray through the lower chamber to the bottom of the same, from which it is conducted off by a dischargepipe. The upper ends of the air-channels are provided with spiral deflectors, whereby a spiral course is imparted to the air in its passage through the air-channels.
The accompanyingdrawing represents a vertical central section of my improved air-cooling apparatus.
A represents an exterior casing of suitable dimensions,and of cylindrical, oblong, 'or other shape, which is closed at the top and bottom. The casing'A is provided at the upper part with an air-induction pipe, to, and at the lower part, ata point diagonally opposite to the airiuduction pipe, with an air-eduction pipe, at. The middle portion of the casing A between the induction and eduction pipes a a is arranged with a series of vertical air pipes or channels, B, which are supported at the upper and lower ends by perforated diaphragms B. To the space formed around the series of airpipes Bis admitted, by a supply-pipe, I), at a point near the lower diaphragm B, the refrigerating-liquid, which rises then Vertically in the space surrounding the air-pipes, its motion being in opposite direction to that of the aircurrents passing through the air-pipes B.
hen the refrigeratingliquid arrives at a level with the upper ends of the air-pipes it passes through perforations in the upper diaphragm B into the air-pipes B, and is shed in a thin sheet over the inner surface of the same (No model.)
charnber O, passing then down through the airpipes .13 and through the spray of refrigerating-liquid in the drip-chamber D to the pipe, conducting the air to the place of use.
The circulation of the refrigerating-liquid is kept up by means of a pump, whereby the refrigerating-liquidsuch as ice-water, brine, &c.is returned to the air-cooler after being cooled to a low temperature by means of ice or a refrigerating apparatus. The air which passes through the pipes is first brought into direct surface contact with the cooling-liquid, whereby its temperature is considerably reduced, and is finally forced, on arriving at the lower end of the ainpipes, through the drippings or sprays of the refrigerating-liquid in the drip-chamber, whereby the temperature is still further lowered by the direct action of the liquid, and thereby the air at the same time washed and purified. The air is thus chilled both by surface contact and by the direct passage through the time sprays of the refrigerating-liquid, to be thence conducted off for fur ther use. To impart to the air forced through the air-pipes B a spiral course, short spiral deflectors e are employed, which are inserted into the upper ends of the pipes and supported on a vertical diametrical bearing-strip 0t slightly larger diameter than the air-pipes, as shown in the drawing. These deflectors impart to the air a spiral motion, so that it passes I am aware that air has been cooled in pipes IOO 2. In an air-cooling apparatus, the combination of the spiral air-deflectors e e, the upper chamber, 0, the air-channels B, lower chamber D, diaphragms B, and supply-pipe 1), submingled with air in pipes or chambers and the l air conducted to apartments for cooling purposes.
Having thusdescribed myinventioml claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- stantiallv as described.
1. An air-cooling apparatus having spiral I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as air-deflectors inserted into the upper ends of my invention I have signed my name in presthe air-pipes, and supported on a vertical diaence of two subscribing" witnesses. metrical bearing-strip of larger diameter than HERMANN KROPFF. the said ainpipes, which latter conduct air and cooling-liquid from the upper to the lower chamber, substantially as described.

CARL KARP.
