Application May 3, 1951, Serial No. 224,425
2 Claims. (or. 42-49 gun choking mechanism which will enable the gases to :1
escape when the gun is fired, the mechanism being readily adjustable and being retained securely in proper place on the gun barrel, the choke of the present invention materially reducing recoil and noise, and enabling full control of pattern.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shot gun choke control which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
ln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevational view of the shot gun barrel, with the adjustable choke mechanism of the present invention thereon;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the assembly of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; 1,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the front portion of a shot gun barrel which is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending,
spaced, parallel slits 11 on its front end. A front sight 9 is secured on the barrel 1i) and the present invention is directed to an adjustable choke mechanism for choking the end of the shot gun barrel 10.
The choke mechanism of the present invention includes a sleeve 14 that is cylindrical in shape and is arranged over the barrel 10, the sleeve 14 being provided with a plurality of holes or openings 15. The barrel 10 is provided with a plurality of rearwardly inclined or extending slots 12 for the passage therethrough of gas after the gun has been discharged. The mechanism further includes a collar 16 which is annular and which is arranged in surrounding relation with respect to the barrel 10, the collar 16 being arranged rearwardly of the sleeve 14.
The collar 16 is provided with a neck 17 of reduced diameter, and the neck 17 is threaded exteriorly, as best seen in Figure 2. Extending forwardly from the neck 17 and secured thereto or formed integrally therewith is a tapered portion 18 which is also threaded exteriorly. The tapered portion 18 is provided with a plurality of 7 spaced slits 19, Figure 3, and a suitable securing element such as the nut 20 is arranged in threaded engagement with the tapered portion 18, so as to clamp the collar 16 securely in place on the barrel 10.
The rear end of the sleeve 14 is provided with an interiorly threaded section 21 that is arranged in threaded engagement with the neck 17. Also, threadedly engaging the neck 17 is a locking sleeve or locking ring 22 of annular shape. The sleeve 22 is knurled exteriorly, as at 23, and the sleeve 22 includes an annular interiorly threaded flange 24 that is arranged in engagement with the neck 17. The collar 16 is provided with suitable markings, or a scale, 25, therein, Figure 1, so that the choke mechanism can be adjusted accurately as desired and locked in place.
The choke mechanism of the present invention further includes an internally tapered compression nipple 26 which is provided with a shoulder 27 of reduced diameter, the shoulder 27 being threaded exteriorly. The front end 23 of the sleeve 14 is threaded interiorly, and the front end 23 threadedly engages the shoulder 27.
In use, the locking ring 22 can be rotated or turned until the locking ring is at the desired position on the neck 17, as indicated by the scale markings 25. Then, the sleeve 14 can be rotated until it abuts the flange 24, so that the choke can be adjusted as desired.
By means of the mechanism of the present invention, the sportsman will be able to quickly change or adjust the choke so that split patterns can be eliminated as well as blown patterns. By rotating the sleeve 14, the pattern will be changed. An arrow may be arranged on the exterior of the sleeve 14 for indicating when the sleeve 14 is in the proper aligned position. The ring 22 will prevent accidental movement of the sleeve 14, the ring 22 coacting with the nipple 26. It has been found that the rearwardly extending or inclined slots 12 are most effective for reducing recoil and providing a part of the choke mechanism. Further, the slope or inclination of the slots 12 will insure that the wads or shot lead will not be stripped as they pass through the barrel 10. Further, these slots 12 allow the gas to pass therethrough as the load moves out of the barrel, and this gas backs up in the sleeve 14 and reduces recoil. The nipple 26 serves to prevent the end of the barrel 10 from expanding, as when the barrel becomes overheated. The ring 22 helps maintain the parts immobile in their varied adjusted positions, and the collar 16 serves to lock the mechanism onto the barrel 10.
The mechanism of the present invention does not need to be welded, brazed, or otherwise secured to the barrel 1i and this is advantageous because such welding or brazing operations usually are harmful to the barrel. Further, the mechanism can be readily removed or replaced on the barrel 1!) when desired without hurting the barrel, and the nut 20, which is arranged in threaded engagement with the tapered portion 18 will prevent accidental shifting of the collar 16 on the barrel 10.
What is claimed is:
1. In a shot gun, a barrel, there being a plurality of spaced parallel slots in said barrel extending angularly with respect to the longitudinal axis of said barrel, an annular collar surrounding said barrel and provided with an annular neck of reduced diameter, said neck being threaded exteriorly, an annular tapered slit portion projecting forwardly from said neck, a securing element positioned in threaded engagement with said slit portion for clamping the collar in place, a cylindrical sleeve provided with a plurality of spaced openings rotatably mounted on said barrel, said sleeve having a portion threadedly engaging the threaded neck, and an exteriorly knurled annular ring positioned in threaded engagement with said neck, said sleeve and collar having the same outside diameter, said ring being of greater diameter than said collar and sleeve and overlapping the collar and sleeve, said ring further including an inwardly projecting annular fiange interposed between said collar and sleeve and threadedly engaging said neck, said slots being spaced from the end of the barrel and being surrounded by that portion of the sleeve having the openings therein.
2. In a shot gun, a barrel, there being a plurality of slots in said barrel, a collar surrounding said barrel and provided with a neck of reduced diameter, said neck being threaded exteriorly, an annular slit portion projecting forwardly from said neck, a securing element positioned in threaded engagement with said slit portion for clamping the collar in place, a sleeve provided with a plurality of spaced openings rotatably mounted on said barrel, said sleeve having a portion threadedly engaging the threaded neck, an annular ring positioned in threaded engagement with said neck, said ring being of greater diameter than said collar and sleeve and overlapping the collar and sleeve, said ring further including a flange interposed between said collar and sleeve and threadedly engaging said neck, said slots being spaced from the end of the barrel and being surrounded by that portion of the sleeve having the openings therein.
