UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK KINGSTON, OF DEPTFORD, COUNTY OF KENT, ENGLAND.
STAlR-ROD SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,083, dated January 23, 1883. Application filed November- 9, 1882. (No model.) Patented in England April 20,1882, No. 1,890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that -I, FRANK KINGSTON, a citizen of England, residing at Deptt'ord, in the county of Kent, England, have invented an Improvement in Eyes for Holding Stair- Garpet Rods, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No.1,890, bearing date April 20, 1882,) of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to a simple and inexpensive construction of eyes for holding staircarpet rods, the object which I have in view being to make eyes that can be fixed in position and made to take a firm hold by mere pressure without the use of screws, nails, or other separate fixings, and that can be readily removed for cleansing and other purposes.
The accompanying drawings show several forms in which eyes according to my invention can be made, the general principle of their construction being the same, although their shapes may be varied according to taste or other considerations. In all cases I bend a strip of metal, or it may be a wire, to nearly a,
right angle, with a circular or partly-circular gap for the stair-rod in the angle, and I provide at or near the end of each limb a pointor chisel-edge projecting a little outward. On pressing this bent piece into the angle which the riser makes with the tread ot' the stair the points or chisel-edges penetrate a little into the wood of the stair and hold the eye in position. When thestair-rodispassedthrough the eye to hold the carpet, the direct strain tending to draw the eye out of the angle of the stair tends to render the angle to which the strip or wire was bent somewhat more ob- Figures 1 and 2 are side views, and Fig.3 is a front view, of an eye according to my iuven-' tion made by bending a strip of metal, turning back the ends of the limbs, and sharpening them to chisel-edges. The ends of the limbs may be of ornamental design, as shown in the side View, Fig. 4, and front view, Fig.
5, the holding points or edges being formed by punching back tongues of the metal. The metal strip maybe helically bent round a mandrel, as shown in the side view, Fig. 6, and front view, Fig. 7; or, instead of a metal strip, a wire may be so bent, as shown in Fig. 8.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and the best means I know of carrying it out in practice, I claim- An eye for holding a stair-carpet rod, made with two limbs having points or chisel-edges to take into the wood of the tread and riser, respectively, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this th. day ofOctober, A. D. 1882.
FRANK KINGSTON.
