ATTORNBYQ WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DELBERT W. JEVVELL, OF ALEXANDER, NEW YORK.
PISTON-PACKlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,076, dated January 23, 1883,
Application filed November 22, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, DELBERT W. J EWELL, of Alexander, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Piston -Packings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide for the adjustment of the packings of pistons from the outside and without removing either head of the cylinder.
To that end the invention consists in packing-segments fitted to slide radially of the piston-head and in cams carried by a sleeve on the piston-rod for forcing the segments outward, as specially set forth and claimed hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piston head and rod with a portion of the head broken away to show the packing-segments. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the piston-head. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one segment detached, and Figs. 4 and 5 are similar views of another form of segment and packing.
The piston consists of two circular disks, A A, formed. with radial grooves a, and attached a short distance apart on the rod B, so as to receive the packing-segmentsG between them. The segments, which are four in number, preferably are formed with ribs b, which take into the grooves a, so that the segments are guided in their movements. On their outer edges are packing strips or segments cl, pivoted at their mid-length by lugs c, and rabbeted at their ends to lap one upon another, so as to form a continuous packing at all times.
Upon the rod B is a loose sleeve,D,extending through the inner disk A of"the piston, and formed or provided on its end between the two disks with a series of cams or eccentrics,
f, against which the lower ends of the segments 0 abut. The sleeve is held from turning by a nut, g,-on the rod, which,on being loosened, allows the sleeve to be turned, and the segments thus forced out by the cams. The packing-strips d accommodate themselves to the inner surface of the cylinder, and to further insure a tight packing two or more of the segments may be made, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, with slide-block hat their inner ends taking upon springs t, fitted in the segments. This construction allows each segment to move out to the extent required.
When the packings are fitted to a piston they can be readily adjusted without removing the heads of the cylinder with which the piston is used. All that is necessaryis toloosen nutg and turn the sleeve D by the application of a wrench to the portion of the sleeve projecting outside the cylinder.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1J'The combination, with a piston head and rod, of sliding segments 0 and sleeve D, carrying cams or eccentrics substantially as shown and described. 7
2. The packingsegments 0, camsf, and sleeve D, in combination with the disks A of a piston head and rod, B, substantially as de-- scribed, for operation as specified.
3. In piston-packings, the rocking strips d, combined with the movable segments 0 of the piston-head, substantially as shown and dc DELBERT WALTER JEWELL.
