I DOUGLAS S. FORGE, OF KINGSVILLE, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY A. EASTMAN,
OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR MAKING DOWEL-PIN S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,053, dated January 23,1883,
Application filed August 26, 1882. (No model.) i
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DOUGLAS S. Fonon, of Kingsville, in the county of Ashtabula and .State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Dowel-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for making dowel-pins, the object being to provide an automatically-operating device of this character which shall combine x 5 simplicity and cheapness of construction with ease of operation and durability and efficiency in use.
With these objects in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a machine embodying myinvention; and Fig.2 is. a view in front 2 5 elevation thereof, the former being removed.
The different parts of the device are mounted upon a table, A, which may be of any convenient form and of any desired construction.
The knife B and the plunger 0, which are 0 adapted to be reciprocated independently of each other, are supported in position between a frame-piece, D, secured to the machine-table, and two angle-irons, E, the ends of the same being respectively attached to the top of the 3 5 said frame-piece and to the table.
The upper edge of the inner face of the knife is provided with a guard, F, which may be formed integral with or attached to the knife, and which extends out even with the cutting- 0 edge thereof. The said cutting-edge of the knife is provided with an inwardly-inclining bevel, Gr, while the outer end of the guard is provided with a similar bevel, H, the object in beveling the knife and guard in the manner 5 described being to prevent them from interfering with the former I, the construction of which will depend upon the character of the pins to be produced. The guard F fulfills a twofold function, in that it not only guides the plunger, which is located beneath it, but also, in conjunction with the knife and frame,
prevents the pin-blanks from being displaced as they are forced into the former by the plunger. The block from which the pin blanks or sections are cut is automatically fed forblocks from which the pins are formed.
The knife and plunger are independently re ciprocated by means of a double-crank device actuated by a shaft, 0, the same being jour- 7o naled in a box, 1?, mounted upon the table A, and actuated by a pulley, Q. The said doublecrank device consists of a crank, R, keyed directly to the shaft and connected to the rear end of the plunger by a pitman, S and of a crank, T, rigidly secured to the crank It by the crank-pin U of the pitman S,and connected with the rear end of the knife by a pitman, V. 1 In virtue of this construction the knife will receive the most rapid impulse in being moved 8o forward and back when the plunger is being moved the most slowly, while on the other hand, when the plunger is receiving its most rapid impulse in being forced forward and retracted, the knife is receiving the least motion. 8
Having set forth the detailed construction of my improved machine, I will now proceed to describe the co-operation of its several parts in performing their work.
Supposing the knife and plunger to be in 0 their retracted positions, the spring will move the table K and engage the blank block upon it with the frame-piece D. The knife and its guard will now advance and out off a dowelblank from the said block, remaining in their 5 forward position of close proximity to the former untilthe plunger has advanced to force the blank into the same. Just before the plunger completes its forward stroke the knife and its guard are withdrawn, the retraction of the plunger following soon after. When both the knife and plunger are in their retracted positions the-block-holding table will be again 2. In a machine for making dowel-pins, the
actuated to present another section of the block to the action of the knife. This effected, the actuation of the knife and plunger will be repeated in the order above described. It will thus be seen that the action of the machineis entirely automatic, requiring no attention, save to replace the blocks as fast as they are exhausted.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction and combination of parts as herein shown and described, but that I hold myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope'of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for making dowel-pins, the combination, with a knife, a plunger, and a former, of a table to support the block from which the pins are formed, and spring mecl1- anism to automatically actuate said table to successively present new sections of the block to the action of the knife and plunger, substantially as set forth.
combination, with a knife, a plunger, and a former, of crank mechanism and pitmen to in-' dependently actuate the knife and plunger in such manner that when one is receiving its greatest impulse the other is receiving its least impulse, substantially as set forth.
3. In a machine for making dowel-pins, the combination, with the table and frame-piece, of the plunger and knife, the angle-irons E E,
and a double-crank device constructed and attached to the plunger and knife, so that the latter are independently reciprocated, substantially as set forth.
4. In a machine for making dowel-pins, the combination, with a plunger and a former, of a knife, a guard, and a frame-piece, the latter being arranged to inclose the plunger and the dowel-pin blank which the plunger forces into the former, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
