SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,966, dated January 23, 1883,
Application filed November 20, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MATTHEW H. MERRI- ,AM, of Lexington, county of Middlesex, State v of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Skiving-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to'a skiving-machine,
especially intended for cutting the ends of leather strips or bands at a bevel to enable them to be united by cement into a continuous band of greater length than can be cut from a single piece of leather.
. Theinvention is embodied in a machine containing a block or bed to receive the strips the ends of which are to be skived, a clamping device to hold the said leather stripsin proper position upon the said bed while being cut, and suitable guides at the sides of the said blockto control the movement of the knife or cutter by which the end of thestrip is cut at the proper bevel.
The knife is adjust-ably secured on a carriage provided with a suitable handle to enable it to be readily moved by the operator, and the carriage is so mounted upon one of its guides as to enable it to be turned up out of the way when a band or strip is being clamped in proper position upon the bed. Means are provided to adjust the angular position of the knife and carriage with relation to the guide and bed, so as to regulate the actionof the knife upon the strip according to the thickness of the said strip and the inclination at which it .is desired to cut its end. The said bed, which is generally madeot' hard metal, is provided with a piece of materialsuch as woodat its end, over which theknife passes after having acted on the leather, the said piece of material operating both to prevent the knife from coming in contact with the hard bed, and also causing the leather, when cut, to terminate with a straight edge instead of in the ragged edge which would be produced if it were attempted to cut the said leather to a minimum thickness at its edge. The said piece ofsoi't material thus operates as a gage for the thickness of the strip at its extreme end or thinnest part, and the said gage-piece is made movable in the bed, and is raised from time to time as it becomes worn (No model.)

The bed-plate a, to receive the strip or band to be skived, is provided with a clamping device, 1), (shown as a plate,) provided with rods at either side, passing down below the table A,upon which the apparatusis supported,and acted upon by springs d, tending to press the said plate 1) down upon the strip B to be skived, as shown in Fig. 2.
The portion of the strip B that is to be beveled off projects beyond the ends of the clamping-plate b, as shown in Fig. 2, and rests upon an inclined portion, 2, of the bed-plate a, so that as the knife or cutter e is moved horizontally over the said bed-plate a it cuts the end of the strip B at the desired angle. The end of the said strip, which is removed therefrom by the said cutter 0, lies over a gagingpiece, f, of soft material, projecting slightly above the bed a, and having its upper side exactly in the plane traversed by the said cutter e, thus causing the strip or band, when cut, to terminate in a straight line, 3, at the edge of the said gage-piecef, the extreme end of the band or strip being of a thickness equal to the distance that the said gage-piecef projects above the bed a at that point.
The cutter e is adjustably attached to a carriage, g, traveling on the guides h t, and provided with a handle, k, to enable it to be easily operated. One of the said guides, as h, is made'cylindrical or it may be adapted to rotate on a longitudinal axis,'and the portion g of the knife-carriage g, that moves thereon, is adapted to'rotate'upon or with the said guide h, so as to enable the entire carriage and knife to be turned up away from the bed a to enable the strips to be readily inserted beneath the clamping-plate b. The said knife 6 is preferably set, as shown, at an angle to a longitudinal line drawn through the center of the bed, and the guides h c' are also inclined with relathe knife a drawing action as it moves over and cuts the strip.

In order to regulate the action of the cutter on the strip, the relative position of the cutter, carriage, guides, and bed is made adjustable. As herein shown, the said bed is provided with adjusting-screwsj at each end, by which it may be raised from the table A, the upward movement being limited by set-screws k at each corner of the said bed, so that by means of the said screwsj k the height of the strip-supporting surfaces of the bed a, relative tothe plane of movement of the knife-edge, and also the inclination of the said bed, either laterally or forward and back, may be adjusted as desired.
It is obvious that the same result might be ac-- moving the knife over it it may be cut to the proper shape.
The clamping device I) maybe operated from beneath the table by a suitable lever, 19, con I nected by a suitable link or rod, 1, with atreadle or foot-piece. (Not shown.)
I claim I 1. The combination of the bed and clamping device with the cutter and its carriage and therefor, combined with means, substantially V as described, to adjust the relative position of the said bed and guide, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The cutter and bed, combined with the gaging-piece m, the said bed limiting the action of the said cutter upon the material being skived, substantially as described.
5; The cutter and bed, combined with the gaging-piece in the said bed and the adjusting device, substantially as and for the purpose described.
