` JRGENSEN, professor, ot Copenhagen, in the Kingdom ot' Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention has reference to an improved construction of electric-arc lamps having two movable carbon-holders which are operated by frictionai contact with two grooved circular disks or pulleys placed on acommon axis and by the action of two solenoids which inclose the two softiron extensions ot' the carbonholders, the size of the arc between the car- .connected therewith and with the source of electricity.v One of the solenoids is wound with two coils, an inner ot' finer and an outer ot' coarser wire, as will appear more fully hereinaiter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved electric lamp. Figs. 2 and 3 are details ot' the same, and Fig. 4 is a diagram illustrating the relative position of the solenoids and carbonholders and their connection with the contact apparatus and source of electricity.

In the drawings, K K represent the carbonholders, which are respectively supported by frictional contact with two circumferentiallygrooved disks or pulleys, h and H, that are iiXed on a common shaft, x, supported in suitable bearin gs ofthe 'transverse strips e of the lamp-casing. The turning ofthe pulleys h H around their axis w in one direction causes the raising of one carbon-holder and the simultaneous lowering of the other carbon-holder, while the turning of the pulleys in opposite direction causes the lowering ot' the tirst carbonholder and the raising of the second carbonholder. Both carbon-holders KK are guided by suitable bushes or sleeves in the top plate, C', of the lamp-casing O, the carbon-holder K being insulated from the top plate, O', of the casing. Both carbon-holders K K are provided with eXtension-rods of soft iron that extend into the hollow cylindrical space ot the solenoids S and S', respectively. The radii of the actuating-disks H and h are made in the proportion of two to one, so as to provide for the quickerhurning oit' ot' the positive carbon pole during the same period ot' time. As both carbons are fed forward simultaneously by the disks and in proportion to their burning, the are is maintained at the saine point.
The contact apparatus R is insulated from the lamp-casing and composed ot' an electromagnet, m, an armature, a, that is pivoted to a standard, o, and held by a tension-spring in oontaotwith an adjustable screw,b, of a standard, o. The tension-spring ot' the armature a is applied to a standard, y, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
The solenoid S isformed ot' two coils, ot' which the inner, t', is ot' liner wire and wound in opposite direction to the outer coil, t. The inner coil, t,is connected to the binding-post 1J and to the outer coil, t, while the latter is connected with lthe binding-post p and with the supportingpost fv ot' the armature a ofthe contact apparatus R.
The'solenoid S is connected to the bindingpost p and to the lower carbon-holder, K. The binding-posti) is further connected by way ot' the post o and the coil ot' the electro-inagnetm to the upper-carbon holder K, all as shown clearly in the diagram Fig. 4.
The solenoids S and S serve, together with the contact apparatus R, to properly regulate the proper distance of the carbon points from each other so as to maintain an arc of uniform size.
In order to adjust the lamp to currents of different strength, a coiled spring, f, is arranged in a casing,j", back of a gear-wheel, d', the shat'tf2 of which turns in suitable bearings ot' one ot' the transverse side strips, e, of the lamp-easing, as shown in Fig. 2. Both 'side strips are attached to vertical side strips, l)1.,ot' the casing O. The gear-wheel d meshes with a pinion, d, on the axis x, so that by regulating the tension ot' the spring fthe strain on the axis fr isincreased or decreased, as required bythe current with which the lamp is worked.

The voltaic 'are is established and maintained between the carbon points in the following manner: When the car-bons are in contact, the current,entering at the bindingpost p, takes the shortest course, by way of post 0, the coil ot' electro magnet m, the upper carbon, lower carbon, and solenoid S', to the bind ing-post p'. The armature a is thereby instantly attracted and the lower-carbon holder K' drawn into its solenoid S', whereby the upper-carbon holder is raised by the action ofthe friction-pulleys It H, and thereby the arc es tablished between the carbon points. A brauch current passes simultaneously from the binding-posti) through the inner coil, t', and the outer coil, t, of solenoid S to the binding-post p', so as to neutralize thereby the action of solenoid S on thelower-carbon holder. The coils t and t' normally form one continuous coil, the coil t being short-circuited by the action ot' the contact apparatus or cut-out R. As the carbon points are consumed the resistance to the passage ofthe current is gradually increased, and thereby the current passing through solenoid S' weakened, while that passing through the outer coil, t, ot' solenoid S is proportionately strengthened. The upper-carbon holder is thereby drawn down by coil t, and the carbon points are caused to approach each other andthe normal condition of the currents in the solenoid is re-established. In case for any cause the carbon points approach too closely to each other, the lower-carbon holder is attracted in a higher degree by the increased strength ofthe current in the solenoid S', while the current in the solenoid S becomes weaker, which causes the separation of the carbon points. If the carbon points, however, should recede from each other to such an extent that the resistance between the points is too great to be overcome by the current, then the armature a of the electro-magnet is released and the current conducted from binding-post p over post o, contact-screw b, armature al, post o, outer coil, t, of solenoid S to the binding- -postph The upper-carbon holder K is thereby drawn down into the solenoid S and the lower-carbon holder K' raised by the action of the disks H h, whereby the carbon points are brought into contact, but instantly separated again, so as to re-establish the arc between the same by a branch current, which passes from the insulated post 0 through the coil of the electromagnet m to the upper-carbon holder, thence to the lower-carbon holder and the solenoid S' to the binding-post p'. rIhe armature a is thereby attracted again by the electromagnet m, and the current that has before passed from the post 0 over set-screw b, armature a, and insulated post o to the exterior coil of the solenoid S interrupted, but the branch current from the binding-screwp through the inner and outer coils ot' the solenoid S and to the binding-screw p', rez-established. By the alternating course ot' thc current lthe are is regulated and maintained in a reliable and uniform manner.
It the lamp is to be suspended, the carbone have to be arranged at the lower part ot' the casing, in which case the relative location ot' the operating parts is correspondingly changed to suit this arrangement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination ot' the carbon-holders K K', having soft-iron extensions,solenoids SS', inclosing the soft-iron extensions, friction contact-pulleys H h, regulating-springff', gearwheel d', and pinion d on the axism ofthe pulleys Hi, substantially as specihed.
2. rIhe combination of the carbon-holders K K', having soft-iron extensions, solenoid S, formed of an exterior coil, t, and an interior neutralizing-coil, t', wound in opposite direction thereto, solenoid S', contact apparatus It, and friction contact-pulleys H zf, substantially as set forth.
