Description

I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY W. OBLENUS, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
STAINING COMPOUND-FOR WOOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,833, dated January 16, 1883. Application filed November 4, 1882 .(Specimens.l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY W. OBLENUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Staining Compounds for Wood, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a compound prepared of stearic acid, boiled-oil colors, dry coloring-matter, and resin, said ingredients being mixed together, as hereinafter described.
In carrying out my invention I take stearic acid, ten pounds; boiled-oil color, one and onehalf pound; dry coloring-matter, one and onehalf pound; resin, one -fourth pound. The boiled-oil color which I use is prepared by mixin gpowdered sienna, ocher, red vermilion oramber with boiled linseed-oil in the usual manner. The dry coloring-matter, which is powdered sienna, ocher, red Vermilion oramber, is used in'a pulverulent state, and must be of the'same nature as the coloring-matter used in preparing the boiled-oil color.
In mixing the ingredients together I proceed as follows: The stearic acid is melted,
and then the boiled color is stirred into it, so as to produce a homogeneous mass. When this has been accomplished the massis permitted to cool, and it is then reduced to a fine powder. This powderisintimatelymixed with the dry coloring-matter and with the resin, both the coloring-matter and the resin having been previously reduced to a powder.
When my staining compound is applied to wood-for instance, to a wooden floor-it enters the grain of the wood and produces afine glossy finish, while at the same time the resin prevents the surface of the floor from becoming slippery.
In preparing my staining compound it is requisite to follow the instructions hereinbefore stated, for I have not been able to obtain a good result by mixing all the ingredients to gether at once; but I have found that by mixing the boiled-oil color with the stearic acid, then reducing the mixture to a fine powder, and mixing this powder with the remaining in gredients the desired result is reached.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A staining compound made of stearic acid, boiled-oil color, dry coloring-matter, and resin, substantially as hereinbefore described.
2. The within-described process for producing a staining compound for wood by mixing stearic acid with boiled-oil color, then reducing the mixture to a fine powder, and mixing this powder with dry coloring-matter and resin about in the proportion hereinhefore stated.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence-0f twosubscribing witnesses.
