HEAD-LIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,804, dated January 16, 1883.
Application filed october 24, 1882. (No modem To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that L EDWIN S. JENNEY, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Head-Lights,
of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to an improvement in that class of headlights which are provided with transparent signal plates or lenses in the sides or top of the head-lightcase; andthe object of the invention is to illuminate such signal-plates in a simple and eicient manner, so that the signals can be readily observed at night.
My invention consists principally in providing the head-light with an auxiliary lamp outside of the reliector, whereby the interior of the head-light and the transparent signals or lenses arranged in the side or top of the headlight case are illuminated as will be hereinafter fully described, and "pointed out in' the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a head-light provided with my improvement. horizontal section in line x x, Fig. 1.

Arepresents the head-light case, B the glass arranged inthe front plate thereof', O the main retlector, D the lamp arranged in the reector, and E the oil-reservoir, all constructed in any welllnown and suitable manner.
F F represent transparent signal-plates arranged in the side walls of the head-light case,
and Gr G represent colored signal-lenses arranged in the front and sides of the top ofthe head-light case in any well-known manner.
H .represents an auxiliary lamp arranged in the headlight case outside of the reliector O, so as to illuminate the interior of the headlight ease, and the signal-plates F F and the lenses G G', arranged in the sides and top thereof. The auxiliary lamp H is preferably connected with the oil-reservoir E ofthe main lamp, as shown in the drawings. J represents transparent plates arranged in the rear Wall of the head-light case for the purpose of enabling the engineer to observe whether the auxiliary lamp H is burning or not. The auxiliary lamp H illuminates the interior of the head-light case outside of the reflector with considerable intensity, and insures a powerful illumination of the transparent signals or lenses which may be applied to the head-light case, and it avoids the necessity of forming extra openings in the main reflector for the purpose otl illuminating such signals or lenses by direct light from the main lamp.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, with a head-light provided with transparentsigual plates or lenses, of an'auxiliary lamp arranged in the headlight case outside of the main retlector,.and
adapted to illuminate said signal plates or lenses, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a head-light, of a reliector, O, a lamp, l), adapted to illuminate the interior of said reliector, an auxiliary lamp, H, arranged outside of said reflector, and an oil-reservoir, E, connected with both lamps, substantially as set-forth.
' 3. Theoombination, with ahead-light, of an auxiliary lamp, H, arranged outside ofthe reector and adapted to illuminate the signal plates or lenses applied to the sides or top of the head-light case, and one or more trans parent plates, J, arranged in the rear Wall of the head-light case, substantially asset forth.
