United States Patent BOX 0R CONTAINER Kenneth T. Buttery, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Application March 3, 1950, Serial No. 147,543
3 Claims. (Cl. 229-16) This invention relates to improvements in box container.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a polygonal box or container which is Well adapted for use as a container for circular pies, cakes and other bakery products.
Second, to provide a collapsible container comprising a top and bottom connected by opposed walls, other parts of the top and bottom being detachably connected to permit the insertion of the article to be packaged and the closing of such walls to provide a substantially rigid closed container.
Third, to provide a box or container having these advantages which may be quickly erected and the parts thereof secured in erected position by simple folding and tucking steps.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a collapsible box or container embodying my invention in erected position, the top being provided with a window.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the erected box on a line corresponding to line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating steps in the erecting of the box.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view partially in section illustrating further steps in the erecting of the box.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. 4 with the parts in fully erected position.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank in which the box or container illustrated is formed with a window opening in the top provided with a transparent closure, one side wall being shown in inwardly folded position by full lines and adhesive indicated thereon, its extended position being shown by dotted lines.
Fig. 7 is a plan View of the box or container collapsed.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises the hexagonal bottom 1 having side walls 2, 3 and 4 hingedly connected thereto by the score lines 5. The walls 2 and 3 are on opposite edges of the bottom. The hexagonal top 6 is hingedly connected at 7 to the upper edge of the wall 2. The top 6 has a sealing flap 8 hingedly connected at 9 to its edge opposite its attachment to the wall 2. This sealing flap is adhesively secured to the outer side of the wall 3, the adhesive being indicated at 10. The walls 4 have slits 11 desirably aligned with their juncture to the bottom and provided with upturned end portions 12. The edges of the top corresponding to the side walls 4 have ta-' pered side walls flaps 13 hingedly connected thereto by the scores 14. These side wall flaps 12 terminate Patented May 3, 1955 2 in tucking tongues 15 hingedly connected thereto at 16. The tongues are joined to the wall flaps 13 to provide shoulders 17 which engage with the side walls at the ends of the slits when the tongues are completely inserted, the shoulder portions 17 being easily deflected as indicated in Fig. 4. When the tongues are pushed through the slits the shoulder portions or lugs thereof snap down on the inner sides of the walls when in completely erected position as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
In use the box is formed as described and the sealing flap adhesively secured to the wall 3. With the top and bottom parts thus connected they may be collapsed as shown in Fig. 7. To receive the contents the box is squared up to bring the walls 2 and 3 to an upright position. A desirable procedure is to then connect one pair of wall flaps 13 with the corresponding side walls which holds the carton in erected position and the contents may then be 'inserted and the other pair of side wall parts secured. With the parts in erected position the contents are effectively protected even though the stock used is quite light, and the contents may be readily inspected through the window which is provided with a transparent panel 18.
While I have found the hexagonal shape to be very desirable my invention is adapted to cartons having other shapes but these are not illustrated as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A collapsible box or container comprising a hexagonal bottom having side walls hingedly connected to the several edges thereof, and a hexagonal top hingedly connected along one edge to the upper edge of one of said side walls and having a sealing flap on its opposite edge adhesively secured to the side wall opposite the side wall to which said top is connected, the remaining side walls having slits alined with their hinge connections to the bottom and terminating in upturned extensions, the edges of the top corresponding to the side walls having such slits having tapered side wall flaps hingedly connected thereto and adapted to overlap the said side walls having the slits therein and terminating in hinged tongues insertable through said slits and engagedly supported by said bottom, said tongues having shoulders in alinement with their hinge connections to the side wall flaps retainingly engageable with the inner surfaces of the portions of the side walls horizontally outwardly beyond said upturned extensions of the slits when the tongues are inserted in the slits, the side walls being of rectangular shape with their upper and lower edges eo-extensive with the adjacent polygonal edges of the top and bottom, and with their top edges supportingly engaging the top throughout the length of the edges thereof, the hinge connections of the flaps to the edges of the top being co-extensive with said edges, and the upper swinging edges of said remaining side walls being co-extensive with the hinged connections of the flaps to the top.
2. A collapsible box or container comprising a hexagonal bottom having side walls hingedly connected to the several edges thereof, and a hexagonal top hingedly connected along one edge to the upper edge of one of said side walls and having a sealing flap on its opposite edge adhesively secured to the side wall opposite the side wall to which said top is connected, the remaining side walls having slits alined with their hinge connections to the bottom, the edges of the top corresponding to the side walls having such slits having side Wall flaps hingedly connected thereto and adapted to overlap the said side walls having the slits therein and terminating in tongues engageable in said slits and engagedly supported by said bottom, the side Walls being of rectangular shape with their upper and lower edges co-extensive with the adjacent edges of the top and bottom, and with their top edges supportingly engaging the top throughout the length of the edges of the top, the hinge connections of the flaps to the edges of the top being co-extensive with said edges, and the upper swinging edges of said remaining side walls being co-extensive with the hinged connections of the flaps to the top.
3. A collapsible box or container comprising a polygonal bottom having side walls hingedly connected thereto, and a polygonal top hingedly connected along one edge to the upper edge of one of said side walls and having a sealing flap on its opposite edge adhesively secured to the side wall opposite the side wall to which said top is connected, the remaining side walls having horizontal slits therein, the edges of the top corresponding to the side walls having such slits having side wall flaps hingedly connected thereto and terminating in tongues engageable side walls being co-extensive with the hinged connections of the flaps to the top.
