(Cl. 112-211) This invention relates to a removable adapter plate and unitary feed roller mounting for sewing machines having auxiliary feed rollers to augment the feeding of the fabric by the feed-dog.
An object of this invention provides a mounting for an upper feed roller by means of a removable portable attachment without drilling any holes in the head of the sewing machine.
Another object of this invention is to provide an adapter plate and a cantilever shaped forwardly extending feed roller mounting which may be removed as a unit from the sewing machine without disturbing the stitching mechanism and the machine operated solely by the stitching and feeding mechanism normally part of the sewing machine.
In prior practice, attempts have been made to drive puller feed rollers for sewing machines to make it possible to work on heavy fabric garments, such as overalls, by driving the rollers with a drive shaft extending the entire length of the machine. This elongated shaft developed a twist during sewing operations, causing irregular feeding and an overthrow.
In other prior designs of feed roller drives, clutch mechanisms were mounted on the work supporting base of the sewing machine in a manner as to cover up or clutter up the base, which made it difiicult to operate.
Another object of this invention is to provide a mounting for auxiliary feeding rollers from the lower main drive shaft, directly, and very close to the lower feed roller, whereby twisting of the drive shaft is eliminated, and whereby the entire area above the work supporting base and between the head and the standard is clear for unencumbered sewing operations.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the of this specification.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 indicates a sewing machine comprising a flat bed or work-supporting base 11 having an upright tubular standard 12 extending therefrom and having an upper overhanging horizontal arm 13 terminating in a hollow upright head 14. An oscillating shaft 15 is mounted horizontally in the upper arm 13. The head 14 termiface 16 to which is attached a cover 17 by screws 18.
2,706,457 Patented Apr. 19, 1955 The sewing machine 10 has a sewing and feeding mechanism well known in the art. The main object of this invention is to provide a detachable mounting for auxiliary feeding rollers to assist the feed-dog feeding mechanism of the sewing machine in order to be able to operate on heavy fabric garments such as overalls. The gist of the invention resides in the fact that the entire area above the work-supporting base and between the horizontal arm 13 and the standard 12 is clear for unencumbered sewing operation.
The mounting 20 comprises an upper roller carrier adapter plate 21 having screw holes 23 designed to align with the holes for the cover screws 18 threaded into the head 14. The plate 21 is hollow, sufficient to permit passage therethrough of the oscillating shaft 15 and operating parts thereon which overhang or extend outwardly past the end face 16. The plate 21 has a hollow central portion and side walls bridging the space between the side walls of the hollow head 14. The plate 21 has an upright guideway member 27 which is suitably supported by screws 28 to the rear surface of the plate. The guideway member 27 has a vertical guideway 30 in which a carrier member 32 is mounted for vertical movements. The screws 18 pass through the apertures 23 in the adapter 21. Further screws 31 passing through the plate 21 and threaded in the head 14 secure the plate to the head when the cover 17 is removed.
At the upper end of the carrier member 32 is a rod 33 on which a coil spring 34 is mounted. The spring reacts at its upper end against the lower surface of an adjusting screw 35 threaded in a lateral extension in the upright guideway member 27. At its lower end, the spring 34 reacts against a shoulder 36 at the upper end of the carrier member 32 and forces the carrier member in a downward direction.
The auxiliary feeding rollers consist of an upper roller 40 and a lower roller 41. The upper roller 40 is centrally apertured and is rotatably mounted on a shaft 42 in an elongated forked housing 43. The housing has an arm 44 which receives the lower portion of the carrier member 32 and is secured thereto by screws 45.
The drive mechanism for the lower puller feed roller 41 comprises a crank 46 secured to the lower roller connected to a stud 56 having a ball-shaped end. The
stud 56 has a threaded end secured to the crank 46. The ball-shaped end is pivotally connected at 56 to the crank 46 (Figures 1 and 3).
In the head 14 is journaled a needle bar 60 carrying a needle 61. The material worked upon is held down by a resser-foot 62 carried by a presser-bar 63. The presser-foot rests on a cloth plate 64 secured to the work supporting base 11. The material is moved across the work support by a feed-dog which is moved back and forth and up and down, as is well known in the art.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 in Figure 3 and shows the shaft 47 rotatably supported in bearings 49, 49. The lower puller-feed roller 41 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 47, and shown in crosssection.
The lower puller-feed roller 41 has a bore 65 in which an oscillating clutching detent carrier 66 is rotatably mounted. The carrier 66 has a hub 67. Mounted on the hub 67 is a washer 68 and a collar 69. A screw 70 threaded in the collar 69 and the hub 67 secures the carrier 66 to the shaft 47 (Figure 4).
As shown in Figure 5, the detent carrier 66 has peripheral cavities 72 in each of which a ball or roller detent 73 and a spring 74 is mounted in a manner as to cause the detent to be wedged between a cam surface 75 in a cavity 72 and the peripheral surface defining the bore 65.
The detent carrier 66, the detent 73 and the spring 74 mounted inside the bore 65 of the feed roller 41, constitute a roller friction clutch 76.
Step-by-step rotation of the lower puller-feed 41 in synchronism with the feed-dog of the sewing machine is effected by the friction clutch 76. The clutch is actuated by the crank 46, in operative engagement with the eccentric 48 on the shaft 50.
In order to prevent reverse movement of the lower feed-roller 41, I have provided a braking detent carrier 80 freely mounted within a bore 81 in the feed-roller 41, as shown in Figure 6. The braking detent carrier 80 is secured to a disk 82 by a screw 83 and to one side of the bearing 49 by a screw 85.
The clutch detent carrier 66 and the braking detent carrier 80 are mounted in the lower feed-roller 41 to work in opposite directions and may be in the form shown and described in Patent No. 1,985,406, issued to Nathan B. Galkin, dated December 25th, 1934.
It is to be noted that the crank 46 has an elongated slot 86 which permits slidable movement therein of the stud 56. It is thus possible to adjust the stud 56 in relation to the slot 86 and to increase or decrease the throw of the strap link 53 for varying the movements of the clutch 76 and the roller 41.
It will be seen that due to the structure outline, the entire area above the work-supporting base and between the head and the standard is clear for unencumbered operation.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
In a sewing machine having a hollow head with a hollow end face and an end face cover plate and operating parts extending outwardly past said hollow end face, a
work-supporting base, a needle and upper and lower feed rollers; an attachment for mounting said upper feed roller, comprising an upper roller carrier plate mounted between said head and said end face cover plate, said roller carrier plate being hollow and having side walls bridging the space between the side walls of said hollow head for housing said overhanging operating parts, said upper roller carrier plate having an integral guideway housing, a carrier bar slidably mounted in said housing, a roller carrier member secured to the lower end portion of said carrier bar and extending forwardly below said head toward the needle, said carrier bar being movable in said housing and permitting vertical movements of said upper roller, a coil spring mounted in said housing and positioned to exert pressure against said carrier bar to cause said upper roller to press against said lower roller, said housing having a sideways extending arm pivotally mounted thereon and adapted for manually raising said bar and said upper roller in a vertical direction, said upper roller carrier plate and said carrier bar and upper roller being secured in unitary relation for removal from said sewing machine head as a unit without disturbing the stitching mechanism, and said sewing machine operated solely by the stitching and feeding mechanism thereof.
