WITNESSES AMOS DIOKERMAN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
BREECH-LOADING ORDNANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.7270,289, dated January 9, lSS.
Y Application lcd June 27, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, Amos DICKERMAN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven -and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breech-Loading Ordnance; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal .sectional View, and Fig. 2 is a side view showing the breech open.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to breechloading ordnance, and more especially to small pieces known as yacht-guns; and it consists -in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. y
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the barrel, which is cored to receive the tube B, forming the bore.
O is the butt-block, which is hinged to the under side of the rear end of the barrel by a pin, D. The under side of the barrel has a bevel-sided or dovetailed stud, E, adapted to engage a suitably-constructed cam, F, arranged in a recess, Gf, in the hinge-arm H of the butt, and fixed upon a vertical stem or shaft, I, having at its lower end a lever, J, by which it may be manipulated so as to secure the butt in aclosed position when required. The butt-block O is recessed to form a cham-A ber, K, in the front wall of which, L, the firingpin M is placed, said pin being forced automati` cally in a rearward direction by a suitably-arranged spring, N. Pivoted between the sides of the recess is the hammer O, which is thrown forward by a strong spring, P, secured to the bottom ot' the recess, and engaging a lug or projection, Q, upon the hammer.
R is a follower sliding longitudinally in the recess K, and having a pin or stem, S, projecting through the rear end of the butt, and having an eye, T, to which a cord or chain may he attached. The follower R carries a slide, U, to which is pivoted a dog, W, having a tooth, V, engaging' a recess or notch, X, in the upper end of the hammer. The dog W is forced automatically in a forward direction bya suitably-arranged siiring,Y. 4Aspring,Z,iscoiled around the follower It between slide U and the rear end of recess K to force said follower in a forward direction.
In operation, when a cartridge has been inserted and the breech closed it is only necessary, i n order to discharge the piece, to draw the stem S in a rearward direction. The dog W, engaging the hammer, pulls the latter back against the tension of spring P, until the tooth V slips out of the notch X, thus releasing the hammer, which is then forced forward by the spring I), so as to strike the firing-pin and discharge the piece. W'hen the stem S is released the spring Z returns the follower to its original position, the spring Y permitting the dog W to yield until its tooth V lagain engages the notch X in the hammer.
By coring the gun, as herein described, the loudness of the report is much increased, which in this class ot' guns, which are generally used'for signals only, is of course of importance. Y
I claim and desire'to secure by Letters Iat ent- The combination, with the barrel, of tlie hinged breech block or butt C, having chamber K,'the firing-pin M, fitted in the front wall of said chamber, the hammer O, pivoted between the sides of said chamber, the hammer-spring P, the follower Il, having. stem S projecting through the rear end of the breech-block, and slide U, formed by an upward extension of said follower, the dog W, pivoted to slide U, and having actuating-spring Y, and the spring Z, coiled around the follower, and forcing the same in a' forward direction, as set t'orth.
In testimony that I claim 'the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AMOS DIGKERMAN.
