Claims. (Cl. 229-16) This invention relates to a carton made from sheet stock and to a blank for folding to form a carton. More particularly, this invention relates to a carton having a sloping false bottom for holding and displaying rows of crayons or the like with each row of the crayons at a higher level than the row in front thereof and to an improvement in the type of carton disclosed and claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 131,960 filed December 9, 1949, now Patent No. 2,617,578.
An object of this invention is to provide a carton having a partition located between front and rear walls in spaced relation thereto and a false bottom or platform sloping upwardly and rearwardly from the lower edge of the partition panel to the rear wall.
A further object is to provide a carton of the type above set forth, having a double section false bottom, one section of the false bottom being hinged to the lower edge of the partition panel, the other section being connected to the lower edge of the rear wall panel by a connecting and supporting panel.
A further object of this invention is to provide a carton in which the sections of the double false bottom extend in face-to-face relation from the lower edge of the partition panel to the rear wall.
The above and other objects and features of this invention will in part be apparent and will in part be obvious from the following detailed description, and the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a carton blank constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a carton formed from the blank illustrated in Fig. 1, showing crayons 1n the carton;
Fig. 3 is a view in section taken along a line IIIIII in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a view in section taken along a line IVIV in Fig. 2, crayons being removed from the carton.
In the following detailed description and the drawing, like reference characters indicate like parts.
In Fig. 1, solid lines have been used to 1nd1cate lines of cut and dash lines have been used to indicate score lines along which the sheet material is bent. The carton blank may be made of appropriate sheet material, such as paper-board or the like.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the carton blank includes a front wall panel 10, side wall panels 12 and 13 hinged along opposite side edges of the front wall panel and a rectangular rear wall panel 14. Rear wall panel 14 1s hinged to the lengthwise side edge of side wall panel 13 opposite front panel 10. A top panel 16 1S hinged to the upper edge of rear wall panel 14, and a bottom panel 17 is hinged to the lower edge of front panel 10. A top flap 18 and a bottom flap 19 are hinged to free edges of the top and bottom panels, respectwely. The foregoing panels fold together to form the outside of the carton, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 with the top flap 18 fitting inside the front wall panel and the bottom flap 19 fitting inside rear wall panel 14.
A partition-supporting panel 21 is hinged along the side edge of panel 14 opposite side panel 13. When the box is assembled and folded together, as shown in Figs.
2, 3, and 4, panel 21 is adhesively attached to the inside of side panel 12. Panel 21 is hinged to a partition panel 22. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, panel 22 is inside the carton and located between front and rear wall panels in spaced relation thereto. A tab 23 extending from an 2,701,089 Patented Feb. 1, 1955 edge of partition panel 22 is adhesively attached to the inside of panel 13 to hold the partition panel in place.
A platform member 24 is hinged along the lower edge of partition panel 22 (see Fig. 1). Member 24 is divided by score lines 26 and 28 into three sections 29, 30 and 31. As shown in Fig. 3, when the carton is assembled, sections 29 and 30 are inside the carton and slope upwardly and rearwardly from the lower edge of partition panel 22 to the rear wall panel to form the top section of a double platform. The score line 26 makes it possible for platform sections 29 and 30 to fold toward each other as these sections are inserted into the carton so that there is no distortion of the carton or platform sections as the platform sections are inserted. As shown in Flg. 3, when the carton is assembled, section 31 forms a tab located inside the rear panel in face-to-face relation therewith. Tab 31 supports the rear edge of platform section 30.
Upper platform panel sections 29 and 30 are supported and held in alignment by a platform panel 32 forming the bottom or lower section of the double platform. As shown in Fig. 1, panel 32 is connected to the lower edge of rear wall panel 14 by a platform supporting panel 33. Panel 33 is hinged to rear wall panel 14 and to panel 32. When the carton is assembled, panel 33 is inside of and in face-to-face relation with panel 31 and parallel to the rear wall panel. As shown, panel 33 is shorter than the distance between the rear wall and partition panels so that panels 33 and 32 can be folded into position without being distorted.
Lower platform panel 32 is located in face-to-face relation with upper platform panel sections 29 and 30 to prevent yielding along score line 26 when the carton is assembled. l'anel 32 is held in position by side tabs 33 and 33. At the free edge of panel 32 is a tab 34. Tab 34 15' parallel to the bottom panel and extends from the partition panel 22 to the front wall panel 10 thereby forming a double bottom for the section of the carton in front of the partition panel. Tabs 36, 37, and 38 at the lower edges of the platform supporting panel and the side wall panels, respectively, fold under tab 34 and above the bottom panel so that, when the carton is assembled, tab 34 rests on tabs 36, 37 and 38. Tabs 36, 37 and 38, in turn, are supported by the bottom panel.
Tabs 39, 41, and 42 (big. 1) are hinged to the upper edges or the part1tion supporting panel and side wall panels, respectively, and told under the top panel, as shown in Fig. 3.
When the carton is assembled and in use, a row of crayons 43 is disposed between partition panel 22 and the front wall panel 10, as shown in Fig. 2. Front panel 10 may be provided with a window 44 through which the crayons of the front row may be viewed. Additional rows 43 of crayons may be placed in the carton behind the partnion panel where they are supported by the platform panels, as shown in Fig. 3. 1he sloping platform panels support the rows of crayons in such fashion that the rows behind partition 22 are supported at progressively higher elevations.
The rear edge of the upper platform is supported by platform supporting panel 33 which engages hinge 28 between the tab 31 and the upper platform panel. In addition, the rear edge of the upper platform panel is supported by the free edge 46 of bottom flap 19. As shown in Fig. 3, free edge 46 engages the hinge between panel 33 and lower platform panel 32 so that the platform panels are firmly supported in place. The lower platform panel holds panels 29 and 30 in alignment and prevents buckling at hinge 26.
All exposed portions of the carton appear on one side only of the blank so that only one side need be completely finished and decorated. The carton may be readily shipped flat in a knocked-down condition, for when the top and bottom flaps are withdrawn and the platform supporting members are unfolded and flattened, the entire carton may be collapsed or flattened so as to save space in shipment.
The carton described above and illustrated in the drawing is subject to structural modification without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a carton having side walls, parallel front and rear walls, and a bottom wall, the invention which comprises a partition panel inside the carton in position between the front and rear walls and in parallel relation thereto, means for attaching the side edges of said partition panel to said side walls, a platform panel hinged to the lower edge of the partition panel and extending upwardly and rearwardly at an acute angle from the partition panel to the rear wall, a platform supporting panel hinged to the lower edge of the rear wall and extending inside the rear wall to the rear edge of the platform panel, and a second platform panel hinged to the free edge of the platform supporting panel and extending in face-to-face relation with the first-mentioned platform panel to the hinge between the platform and partition panels, the lower edges of the platform panels being supported by the bottom wall of the carton.
2. In a carton having side walls, parallel front and rear walls, and a bottom wall, the invention which comprises a partition panel inside the carton in position between the front and rear walls and in parallel relation thereto, means for attaching the side edges of said partition panel to said side walls, an upper platform panel hinged to the lower edge of the partition panel and extending upwardly and rearwardly at an acute angle from the partition panel to the rear wall, a platform supporting panel hinged to the lower edge of the rear wall and extending inside the rear wall to the rear edge of the platform panel, a lower platform panel hinged to the free edge of the platformsupporting panel and extending in face-to-face relation with the upper platform panel to the hinge between the platform and partition panels, the lower edge of the lower platform panel being supported by the bottom wall of the carton, and a flap hinged to the free edge of the upper platform panel and extending downwardly therefrom between the rear wall and the platform-supporting panel, the hinge between the platform-supporting panel and the lower platform panel engaging the hinge between said flap and the upper platform panel.

In a carton having side walls, parallel front and rear walls, and a bottom wall, the invention which comprises a partition panel inside the carton in position between the front and rear walls and in parallel relation thereto, means for attaching the side edges of said partition panel to said side walls, an upper platform panel hinged to the lower edge of the partition panel and extending upwardly and rearwardly at an acute angle from the partition panel to the rear wall, a platform-supporting panel hinged to the lower edge of the rear wall and extending inside the rear wall to the rear edge of the platform panel, a lower platform panel hinged to the free edge of the platform-supporting panel and extending in face-to-face relation with the upper platform panel to the hinge between the platform and partition panels, the lower edge of the lower platform panel being supported by the bottom wall of the carton, the upper platform and lower platform panels being of equal length, and a flap hinged to the free edge of the lower platform panel, the flap being of a length equal to the distance between the partition panel and the front wall, said flap resting on the bottom wall in face-to-face relation therewith and extending between the partition panel and the front wall.

In a carton having side walls, parallel front and rear walls, and a bottom wall, the invention which comprises a partition panel inside the carton in position between the front and rear walls and in parallel relation thereto, means for attaching the side edges of said partition panel to said side walls, an upper platform panel hinged to the lower edge of the partition panel and extending upwardly and rearwardly at an acute angle from the partition panel to the rear wall, the upper platform panel being divided into two sections by a score line extending parallel to and spaced from the hinged edge thereof, each section being shorter than the distance be tween the partition panel and the rear wall, said upper platform panel being adapted to fold on said score line when folded from a collapsed position in which the upper platform panel is aligned with the partition panel to an erect position in which the upper platform panel extends between the partition panel and the rear wall, a platformsupporting panel hinged to the lower edge of the rear wall and extending inside the rear wall to the rear edge of the platform panel, the platform-supporting panel being shorter than the distance between the partition panel and the rear wall panel, and a lower partition panel hinged to the free edge of the platform-supporting panel and extending in face-to-face relation with the upper platform panel to the hinge between the platform and partition panels, the lower platform panel being adapted to swing between a collapsed position in alignment with the rear wall and an erect position in which the platform-supporting panel is inside of and substantially parallel to the rear wall, the lower edge of the lower platform panel being supported by the bottom wall of the carton.
5. A carton which comprises side walls, parallel front and rear walls, a bottom wall panel hinged to the lower edge of the front panel, a partition panel inside the carton in position between the front and rear walls and in parallel relation thereto, means for attaching the side edges of said partition panel to said side walls, an upper platform hinged to the lower edge of the partition panel and extending upwardly and rearwardly at an acute angle from the partition panel to the rear wall, said upper platform being divided into a pair of sections by a score line parallel to the hinge, each section of the upper platform being shorter than the distance between the partition panel and the rear wall, a tab hinged to the free edge of the upper platform and extending downwardly therefrom inside the rear wall in face-to-face relation therewith, a platform supporting panel hinged to the lower edge of the rear wall and extending upwardly therefrom inside the rear wall and said tab, said platform supporting panel being shorter than the distance between the partition panel and the rear wall, a lower platform panel hinged to the free edge of the said platform supporting panel and extending in face-to-face relation with and below the upper platform, and means for holding the bottom wall in position perpendicular to and extending between the front and rear walls to support the lower edge of the lower platform panel.
