INVENTOR/Vy G ulm/RMO HERNNDEZG ATTORNEY United States Patent O REINKING DEVICE FOR TYPEWRITER RIBBONS Guillermo Hernndez G., Mexico City, Mexico Application April 19, 1951, Serial No. 221,812
1 Claim. (Cl. 197-171) The invention relates to reinking devices for the ribbons of typewriting machines, the ribbon in said machines being drawn from its supply spool by its rewinding spool. An object of the invention is to provide such a reinking device comprising an inking roller impregnated with ink and three excess ink absorbing rollers around which the ribbon is drawn serpentinely, said ex cess ink absorbing rollers being spaced from one another by intervals respectively much wider than the thickness of the ribbon and exerting a frictional drag upon the ribbon to effect intimate contact thereof with said rollers and said inking roller, said intervals admitting of ready manipulation of the ribbon in its application to the machine serpentinely around said rollers, said excess ink absorbing rollers, said inking roller and said supply spool being grouped together and having a platform support capable of being mounted within the contracted space of the machine normally occupied by the ribbon supply spool thereof.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth in the claim.
ln the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, the ribbon rewinding spool being omitted.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the invention on a larger scale, the ribbon rewinding spool being shown.
Figure 3 is a plan View of the invention as applied to the rear portion of a typewriting machine, said rear portion being shown conventionally, the key levers not being shown.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the inking roller composed of absorbent material impregnated with ink, and 2 designates each of three excess ink absorbing rollers composed of absorbent material, the ribbon 3 being drawn from its supply spool 4 serpentnely around the inking roller and the excess ink absorbing rollers by the ribbon rewinding spool 5 of a typewriting machine 6. The excess ink absorbing rollers 2 are spaced from one another by intervals 7 respectively much wider than the` thickness of the ribbon 3 and exert a frictional drag upon the ribbon to effect intimate contact thereof with said rollers and with the inking roller, said intervals 7 admitting of ready manipulation of the ribbon in its application to the machine serpentinely around said rollers. The excess ink absorbing rollers 2 and the inking roller 1 are disposed in inner and outercouples with the inking roller disposed between one of said rollers and said supply spool, said excess ink absorbing rollers, said inking roller and said supply spool being grouped together and 2,699,245 Patented Jan. 11, 1955 ICC mounted upon a platform support or base plate 10 capable of being mounted within the contracted space 11 of the machine normally occupied by the ribbon supply spool thereof. The mounting of the excess ink absorbing rollers 2, the inking roller 1, and the ribbon supply spool 4 upon said base plate 10 is accomplished by vertically fastening in spaced relationship the shafts for said rollers 1 and 2 and said supply spool 4 by their lower ends only in said base plate.
lt has been proposed to provide three excess ink absorbing rollers spaced from one another by intervals respectively equal to the thickness of the ribbon. In such ease the excess ink absorbing rollers tend to rotate one another through the medium of the ribbon, thus lessening the frictional drag exerted thereby upon the ribbon to effect intimate contact thereof with said rollers and with the inking roller. Also in such case, the ribbon in its application to the machine cannot be readily manipulated serpentinely around said rollers, such manipulation being accomplished with dillculty and with added soiling of the fingers of the operator by the ink of the ribbon. Also in such case, the inking roller, the excess ink absorbing rollers and the supply spool are incapable of being grouped together and provided with a platform support capable of being mounted within the contracted space of the machine normally occupied by the ribbon supply spool thereof.
I claim:
A reinkng device for the ribbons of typewriting machines, comprising a base plate, an inking roller composed of absorbent material impregnated with ink and three excess ink absorbing rollers composed of absorbent material mounted upon said base plate by vertically fastening in spaced relationship the shafts for said rollers by their lower ends only in said base plate, the ribbon being drawn from its supply spool serpentinely around the inking roller and the excess ink absorbing rollers by its rewinding spool, said excess ink absorbing rollers being spaced from one another by intervals respectively much wider than the thickness of the ribbon and exerting a frictional drag upon the ribbon to effect intimate contact thereof with said rollers and with the inking roller, said intervals admitting of ready manipulation of the ribbon in its application to the machine serpentinely around said rollers, said excess ink absorbing rollers and said inking roller being disposed in inner and outer couples with the inking roller disposed between one of said rollers and said supply spool, said rollers and said inking roller being grouped together and capable of being mounted upon said base plate within the contracted space of the machine normally occupied by the ribbon supply spool thereof.
