E. NORTON.
GAN-I N. PEYERS. Pvwwuthennpher. washington, D C,
y NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN NORTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,698, dated December 26, 1882.
i Application filed November 23, 1882. (No model.)`
To all whom Iit may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN NORTON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in open mouthed sheetmetal cans, wherein the cover is designed to be secured to the can bycoupl ing devices which operate with a rotaryinorion, andl more particularly to improvements upon the can for which a patent, No. 235,275, was heretofore granted to me uiider date of December 7, 1880.
In the present invention the seamless band or ring is provided with an inturned flange at each edge, which not only gives a stronger and lirmer construction to the seamless ring, but renders it unnecessary to secure it to the canbody7 at more than one edge, thus saving' the soldering` ot'oiie seam and inateriallylesseiiing ihe'cost as well as producing` a better can.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specitication, and in which similar letters ot' reference indicate like parts,Fig ure 1 is a side elevation of a can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the seamless ring before being secured to the cari-body. Fig. 3 is a section showing cover removed, and Fig. 4 is a section showing cover applied.
1n the drawings, A represents the cali-body,
' preferably provided with an oli'set or shoulder,
a, at its top edge.
B, is the seamless band or ring. It is provided with an inturned ljange at each edge b and-b. The uppertlange, b, hasitsedge turned down to form a shoulder, b2, which iits inside the can-body, and is secured or soldered there t0.
C is the can cover. The cover C and the seamless ring or band B are both stamped out by dies, so that they of course accurately tit each other, and they are provided with suitable coupling devices, c and c', for securing the cover iight upon the can. To insure a tight joint, a paper or other gasket, d, if de` sired, may be interposed between the cover and the top of the seamless ring. The cover C is provided with a circular recess or d epression, d', in which the gasket tits, and which also serves to strengthen the cover.
The strengtheniiig-tlange bat the lower edge of the depending seamless ring may, if pre` ferred, be turned outward or formed into a hollow bead or imitation wire, or this strengthen'- ing-flange may be omitted.
By using a depending seamless ring instead of soldering the seamless ring at both its upper and lower edge, as shown in my former patent above referred to, while the seamless regularities in the h't ot' the can-cover and seamless ring occasioned by irregularities in soldering the lower edge `ot the seamless ring rigidly to the can-body.
I claiinl l. The combination, with a can-body, of a seamless ring or breast secured thereto, and provided with an inturned flange at each edge, su bstantially as specitied.
2. The combination, with a can-body, ot a depending seamless ring having an inturned flange at'the top, joined to the can-body,;and a cover, said cover and seamless ring being provided with coupling devices, substantially as specified.
EDWIN NORTON.
