SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,696, dated December 26, 1882.
Application filed July 10, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL P. MORGAN, of
Fitchburg, in the cou nty of Worcester and State' of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and Improved Water-Motor; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a plan of the motor with the lopenings for a nozzle, combined with a reversible wheel; and, fourth, in-a disk secured to the driving-shaft between the motor-wheel and the casing, the action of which prevents leakage, all oi' which will hereinafter be specifically described.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I yhave carried it out.
In the said drawings, A isthe casing or housing, provided with the relief-pocket a and waste-pipe a. A spindle, b, passes 'through the casing, and has on its outer end a drivingpulley and on its inner end a power-wheel, B, composed ot' a central hub or disk, b', from which radiate equidistant spokes or arms b2,
' bearing on their ends buckets C to receive the impact of the entering stream of water. The buckets are made of short tubes, with one end open, as seen at t', and a portion of. the tube cut away, as seen at l, 2, 3, and Ll. This construction prevents the water from rebounding toward the sides of the casing when it strikes the tubular buckets through the cut-away portion 1 2 3 4.

The nozzle D enters the casing at the upper edge, so that the water will strike the buckets in a line tangential to the line of their travel. The nozzle connected with the inlet-pipe consists of a short pipe, c, into the discharge end ot' which is secured a double conical plug, c', provided with a central longitudinal hole ot' much less diameter than that of pipe e. This form of nozzle I find highly elicient, as the centrally-perforated conical plug e cuts out, so to speak, a small stream from the, center of the main stream, where the water has the greatest velocity. n
On the opposite side ofthe casing from nozzle D is an opening, E, properly tapped, and of a proper size to receive said nozzle, but closed with a screw-plug, I". By this construction the motor can bc made to run in either direction without changing the position of the casing by simply reversing the wheelthat is, by taking the wheel off the spindle, turning it, and replacing it, so the open face of the buckets are toward opening E, and changing the nozzle to opening E and transferring the screw-plug. This construction of wheel, as described, tends to throw the water toward the edge of the casing; but in order to prevent any water working out through the journal-bearing I secure to the spindle b, close to the end of thejournal-box, a disk, H, which turns at a high velocity with said spiudle,and as any water approaches the bearing it comes in contact with diskH and is thrown away from the center by the centrifugal force generated by the revolving disk.
I am aware that heretofore turbine Jwheels have been made wherein two fixed water-conduits have been connected with the casing and adapted to operate alternately against the sides of a star-shaped wheel. Hence I make no broad claim to devices adapted to alternately impinge a stream of water on the opposite sides of' a water-wheel.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 2.
