SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,689, dated December 26, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. LUGE, of Prairie Centre, in the county of Ira Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Cultivator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists of improvements in the construction and arrangementof the wheelgear, hitching attachments, and adjusting devices ot' cultivato'rs, for operation as hereinafter fully described.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the tongue in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a section of one of the wheels, showing the construction of the same; and Fig. 4 is a broken perspective view of a plow with its attaching device.

The frame consists of the front cross-beam, a, to which the tongue I) is pivotally attached, the side beams, 0, extending rearward therefrom, wheel-standards d, bracesf, and the connecting-bar e of the wheel-standards. Uasterwheels consistingofmetal rim g,with the spokes h riveted in and hub cast on the spokes, are swiveled on the lower ends of these standards hy okesj, the saidyokes beingarranged horizontally for enabling the standards to extend lower down and the wheels to be larger than if said yokes were vertically arranged over the wheels. In order to enable the operator to change the connection of the tongue readily while in his place behind the machine a spring-actuated presser, t, arranged in a tubular case, to, is made to bear on the shank cot thepin g, which is pivoted to the front cross-beam, a, at w, to cause said pin to connect automatically with the bar m when its holes register with said pin The plows b are attached to the prongs c of the T-head d of the cranked arms 0, fittingin the ends of the tubular shaftf through the side pieces, a, and fastened by set-screws 1, so that the plows may be shifted toward and from each other to alter their distance apart by moving the arms 6 lengthwise in the tubular shaft, in which the arms 0 may also be turned, as desired, to allow the plows to shift forward or backward to some extent to alter their pitch. The T-heads (1 range in the diagonal line necessary to Set the advance plows inside or nearer together than the rear ones for making their respective furrows side by side, and from the front end of each head d a draft-rod, 9', extends up to the front beam,to which it is adjustably connected by a socket, h, pin '6, and a series of holes, j, in the rod, said rods being arranged in the same oblique lines that the T-heads are for drawing, in the line of the plows. Wooden pins are employed to break for the relief of the plows in case they are unduly obstructed.

The plows b, Fig. 4, are connected to a bar,

a, which I call a ratchet, by a pin, 0, in the plow-blade, and a bolt,p, the pin being changeable from one to anotherof a series of ratchetnotches 0 in the bar to alter the pitch,and said ratchets are connected to the prongs c by a staple, m.

I propose to arrange the connections of the plows so that. they may be changed at will for the application of plows of different kinds and forms according to the work at hand.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. The combination of tongue I), bar m, slotted post 0, spring-pin q, and leter a; with the cultivator-fraine mounted on caster-wheels, substantially as described.

2. The plows I), attached tothe shanks c of T-heads d of crank-arms c in tubular shaft; said T-heads being arranged obliquely to the machine and in the line of the plows, substantially as described.

3. The draft-rods g, in combination with plowsbanks c, the crank-amuse, and the tubular shaftf, whereby the plows are adapted to be shifted forward and backward, said rods being adjustably connected to the front; beam by sockets 71 and pins 2'', substantially as described.

4. The combination of the crank-arms 0, having the plows attached to them, tubular connecting-shaftf, beams c, and the bindingscrews Z, substantially as described.
