FERDINAND KING, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
DIRECTION-PLATE AND LABEL-HOLDER FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,681, dated December 26, 1882.
Application filed October 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,FERDINAND KING,of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Railroad Addre-s-Plate; and I- do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a face view of the device with the end door or gate for retaining the card thereon open. Fig. is a cross-section through the line 00 a".
The object of my invention is to provide an address-plate to be applied to passenger and freightsteam-cars for the purpose ofindicating for the benefit of passengers and train-men the destination of said car, and which invention is also applicable for use asadoor-plate,expresspla e, 830.
It consists in a metal frame composed of two plates having a central chamber with a glass or mica plate in front, which chamberis adapted to recei\ e a card bearing special inscription, and is retained bya pivoted door, the metallic marginal face of the plate being provided by castingor engravingwith general instructions, when used for passenger and freight cars, or with the name when used as a door-plate.
In the drawings, A A represent a metallic frame composed of a front plate, A, suitably chambered on the inner side and provided with a glass front, a, and a back plate, A,fastened to the front plate by screws 8. At the end of the metallic frame is a hinged or pivoted door, B, which opens or closes the end of the chamher, and when. closed is retained by a spring- (Jiht'll, l). The object of this door is to permit a special address-card,c, to be inserted into the chamber, so as to show through the glass or mica plate. When used as an address-card for railway-cars the destination of the car going one wayis printed on one side of the card, and the destination of the same car when going in the opposite direction is printed on the other side of said card. On the margin of the frame-plate are the general instructions Take this car to, placed above the card, and below it Agent will reverse card at destination. When used for a door-plate these words are left out, and the name and profession of the individual may be engraved thereon, while the card will be useful for such inscription as Out of city, Will return at such-a time, 850.
Now,in defining my invention more clearly, I would state that I am aware that most of the separate features of my invention are not new in themselves; and 1 only claim the device as a whole when composed of the twoplates, with the card-chamber, transparent front, marginal inscription-face, and end door or gate, with spring-catch for retaining the card. This construction secures greater compactness and durability and a more extensive range of use than devices heretofore constructed for like purposes.
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim as new is An address-plate consisting of the combination of two tlat frame-plates, A A, fastened permanently together, with a card-chain her between them, the front plate, A, being formed with a marginal face for inscription, a central glazed or mica opening, and a door, B,
fastened by a spring-catch, 11, opening into the card-chamber, substantially as shown and described.
