PRESS FOR FORMING CREASESINSTOVE PIPES. No. 269,603. v Patented Dec 26,1882,

NI'IED STATES EDWARD W. STODDARD, ()F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PATENT Error-t.
PRESS FOR FORMlNG CREASES IN STOVE-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,603, dated December 26, 1882.
Application filed October 25, 1882. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. SIODDARD, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Presses for Forming Greases in Stove-Pipe; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in presses ior forming channels upon the exterior of a sheet-metal cylinder-such as is required to receive the adjoining flanged end of another sheet-metal cylinder when it may be desirable tojoin the two cylinders together, as in manufacturing stove-pipe elbows with thejoint on the inside.
The invention consists in the peculiar con-.
struction, combination, and operation of the various parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved press. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. I
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a table or frame which supports the operating parts of the machine. To the front of this table there is secured a semicircular plate, 0, the periphery of which is provided with a groove, a.
U are guides which control the reciprocating niovements'of the follower-bar I), the lower end of which terminates in ahead, I), to which the punch E is detachably secured by means of the screws or bolts 0. The lower end of this punch is conformed in shape to that of the groove in the plate B.
F is a lever pivoted to the frame, with its shorter arm pivot-ally secured within the slot d in the bar D. The opposite end of this lever is pivotally secured to the eccentric-rod G, the straps of which engage with an eccentrically-secured pulley upon the shaft H. The movement of'the eccentric-rod communicates the requisite reciprocating motion to the bar which carries the punch. The plate Z: is secured to another plate, I, which has a vertically-reciprocating movement on dovetailed or other guides, (shown in dotted lines in both figures upon the front of the table,) and the cam J, actuated by the treadle K, raises the plate I, carrying the grooved plate I) upward within reach of the descending bar and punch when pressure is exerted upon said treadle. Motion is given to the shaft H from any convenient source.
In practice the end of the pipe or cylinder is engaged with the plate I), so that the pipe will surround said projecting plate. Pressure is then applied by the operator to the treadle, which raises the plate I. The next revolution of the eccentric on the shaft H forces the bar carrying the punch down, thereby pressing a crease in the metal of the cylinder, when the next half-revolution of the eccentric will carry the bar and punch upward sufficiently far to allow the operator to partially rotate the pipe under treatment, when the completion of the revolution of the eccentric will complete the formation of the crease around the circumference of the pipe.'
What I claim as my invention is l. A device for forming a crease around the circumferenceof a sheet-metal pipe, consisting of a reciprocating punch or die adapted to force the metal exposed to its action into a groove in a semicircular plate or die, a vertically-moving reciprocating bed-plate carrying said die, a pivoted cam supporting said bedplate, and a suitable treadle connected to and adapted to partially rotate said cam and move the bed-plate and die toward oraway from the oppositely-moving punch or die, substantially as described.
2. In a device for the purpose described, the combination of a reciprocating bar carrying a punch with a reciprocating bed-plate, and a supporting and operating cam and suitable treadle, whereby the same may be rotated to reciprocate said bed-plate, and thereby sustain the pipe while under the action of the punch, substantially as specified.
3. In a device for the purposes described, a reciprocating bar carrying a punch, actuated by an eccentric on a revolving shaft, in combination with a reciprocating bed-plate, and supporting and actuating cam J, treadle K, and suitable return-spring, substantially as set forth.
EDWARD W. STODDARD.
