2 laims. (Cl. 70-147) This invention relates to a door knob lock and latch set with inside push button locking means for the outside knob and key operable locking and unlocking means for the outside knob.
The general obiect of the invention is to provide a lock-out-proof door knob lock and latch set. Another object is to provide an improved door knob lock and latch set particularly adapted for outside doors in which the outside knob may be locked against turning by a push button located in the inside, which locking is released when the retracting mechanism is actuated by pushing in the latch bolt as by contacting the strike plate upon closing the door on which the lock is installed. Another object is to provide in a push button knob and latch set, outside locking means requiring the use of a removable key.
These and other objects are attained by my invention which will be understood from the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational view partly in section of the lock set as installed on a door;

In the preferred form of my invention shown in the drawings, the door knob lock and latch set consists of a body 21 which is generally cylindrical in shape and is assembled from die cast metal half portions, which are here designated 22 for the outside half portion and 23 for the inside half portion, these half portions being assembled to form a hollow retractor body by means of assembly screws 24 whose threaded ends engage holes in the outer half portion 22, the corresponding unthreaded holes 26 in the inside half portion 23 being countersunk at 27 to receive the heads 28 of the assembly screws 24. In the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2, the right hand knob containing the key actuated cylinder lock is referred to as outside and the left hand knob containing the push-button is referred to as inside, this relating to the mounting on a door such as a house entrance door. The outside half portion 22 of the body is provided adjacent the body with an outwardly extending axial bearing sleeve 29 which is provided with threads 30 on the outside surface for the mounting therein of the outside tubular spindle 31 upon the end of which the outside knob 32 is fastened. Beyond the said threads 30 in the diameter of the sleeve is reduced and a covering sleeve 33 is attached thereto, said sleeve having an access hole 34. An outside rosette 35 attached to the clamping plate 36 is mounted on the threads 30 of the sleeve 29 and a pair of spring actuated detent pins 37 set in holes 38 in the body 21 press into the dimples 39 on the inside surface of the clamping plate 36 to prevent loosening of the plate and rosette. The inside half portion 23 of the housing is also provided with an outwardly extending axial bearing sleeve 40 in which there is mounted for rotation the inside tubular spindle 41 on the end of which is mounted the inside knob 42. A cover sleeve 43 is attached to the bearing sleeve 40 and is provided with an access hole 44 for the spring catch 45 holding the inside knob on the spindle 41. An inside clamp plate 46 is provided to abut the door at the margin of the mounting hole, screws 47 being provided to fit threaded holes 48 in the inside half body 23, and a rosette 49 is removably attached to said clamp plate by the spring catch 50. The latch bolt retractor 51 consists of a generally rectangular frame having a pair of opposed fingers 52 which are adapted to engage a slot 53 in the protruding latch bar 54 of the spring biased latch 55, the latch housing 56 being mounted in the door at right angles to the knob spindles, the tabs 57 engaging the latch connecting edges 58 of the retractor guide plates 59. On opposite sides of the retractor 51 there are provided laterally extending ledges 60 which form the four thrust surfaces on the retractor against which the cam 61 at the end of the outside knob spindle 31, the cam 62 at the end of the key actuated unlocking spindle 63, and the cam 64 and the cam 65 on the inside end of the inside knob spindle 41 respectively press against one or the other ledges 60 of the retractor 51 to reciprocate it and thereby actuate the spring latch 55. The retractor 51 is also provided at its edges with bosses 66, one on each edge, which bosses engage longitudinal slots 67 in the guide plates 59. The retractor 51 is enclosed on four sides in steel casing consisting of two retractor bearing plates 68 which fit in the bottom of the cavity of each of the two half portions 22 and 23 of the body 21. each beairng plate 68 being provided with a circular opening for the outside and inside spindles 31 and 41 respectively. Rectangular holes or slots 69 are provided in the cavities of the half portions at the edges thereof which are adapted to engage the tabs 70 on the guide plates 59, corresponding notches 71 being also provided in the edges of the guide plates 59 to receive the tabs 70 thus keying the parts together. Each of the guide plates 59 is provided at one end with a right angled inwardly projecting tab 72 having a mound 73 which serves to hold one end of each of the coil springs 74 which are disposed on either side of the retractor 51, the other end of each of the coil springs abutting the edge shoulders 75 of the retractor, the spring then lying in the edge channels 76. When assembled, the retractor 51 is thus completely incased in the two guide plates 59 and the two bearing plates 68 which are anchored together by means of the notches and tabs as described, the retractor being spring pressed in the direction of the fingers 52.
The guide plates 59, at the ends opposite the inwardly projecting tabs 72, are bent inwardly to form latch connecting edges 58, these edges being substantially 3 parallel to the opposed faces of the fingers 52 of the retractor. These latch connecting edges 58 are arranged to engage tabs 57 on the spring latch bolt housing as shown in Fig. 1.
The inside knob 42 is provided with an axial hole 77 in which there is mounted the push button 78 whose inner end plate 79 is attached on the locking bar 80, the locking bar extending through the central opening 81 in the retractor and extending into the spindle 31 for the outside knob 32. The other end of the locking bar is provided with a dogging arm 32 at right angles to the bar, this dogging arm being adapted to dog the spindle 31 for the outside knob as will be described. The locking bar 80 is provided with trip catch 83 which is arranged to latch over the edge 84 of the opening 81 in the retractor 51 and thereby hold the locking bar Si) in dogging position, so long as the retractor is in the normal position with the latch extended.
The outside tubular spindle 31 is provided with the outside knob 32, the outside knob being provided with an axial opening in which there is mounted a cylinder lock 86, the plug 87 of said lock being operable by removable key 158, and the rotatable plug 37 being attached to a slotted connector 39 inside the outside tubular spindle 31. The outside knob 32 .is attached to the outside spindle 31 by means of the spring detent catch 90 which is disposed inside the outside spindle 31. A locking bar actuator 91 which is adapted to pull the locking bar 80 into the dogging position by the turning of the key 88 is disposed intermediate the slotted connector 39 and the end of the locking bar 80. The actuator 91 consists of an outside cylinder 92 having a closed end 93 through which protrudes a connector bar 94 which is adapted to engage the slotted connector 89. A spring pressed button 96 is provided inside the cyiinder 92 there being a washer 95 connected to the connector bar 94 adapted to move inside the button against the coil spring 97 inside the button, so that both the button and the connector bar 94 may be moved against the spring. A helical groove 98 is cut in the wall of cylinder 92 between the open end and the button 96 so that it engages the dogging arm 82 of the looking bar 80 and upon the turning of the key 88 in one direction will pull the locking bar 81) toward the outside knob 32 so that the trip catch 83 engages the edge .34 of the retractor opening 81 and thereby holds the locking bar 30 in a position to dog the outside spindle 31. The dogging arm 32 projects into the longitudinal slot 99 in the outside tubular spindle 31, the dogging arm 82 also extending into the longitudinal dogging groove 100 in the outside bearing sleeve 29. The end 181 of the locking bar 80 is preferably rounded and arranged to press against the indented end of the button 96 in the locking bar actuator 91, the spring 97 acting against this button keeping the locking bar under spring pressure tending to thrust the button toward the inside door knob 42.
in the operation of my lock, the pressing of the push button 78 in the inside knob 42 causes the dogging arm 82 of the locking bar 86 to dog the outside spindle 31 to the dogging groove 100 in the bearing sleeve 29 for the outside spindle 31. The trip catch 83 on the locking bar 81) engages the retractor edge 84 so that the locking bar is held in dogging position until the trip catch isreleased by the inward or latch withdrawing movement of the retractor such as would occur when the door is closed and the latch bar was thrust inwardly on contacting the strike plate and thereby moving the retractor. This inward movement of the retractor releases the trip catch 83 and undogs the outside knob, which may then be turned in either direction of rotation to actuate the retractor and spring latch. With the outside knob free to turn, the outside spindle may again be dogged and the outside knob rendered nonturnable by the turning of the key 88 in one direction, which rotates the connector bar 94 and the outside cylinder 92 of the locking bar actuator 91. The helical groove 98 thereby engages the dogging arm 82 and pulls the locking bar into the dogging position, the trip catch 83 again engaging the retractor edge 84 and holding the locking bar 80 in locked or dogging position.
This mechanism prevents 'the occupant from locking himself out without keys, it being necessary to positively actuate the locking mechanism with the portable key 88 in order to lock the door from the outside.
I claim:
1. In a door knob lock and latch set of the type described having a spring biased latch, a retractor housing and a latch retractor, said retractor being separately actuated by inside and outside spindles to which inside and outside knobs are attached respectively, and having a push button in the inside knob; a dogging bar having a right angled dogging arm operatively connected to said push button and extending through said inside spindle and said latch retractor into said outside spindle, a trip catch on said dogging bar adapted to engage an edge of said retractor to releasably hold said dogging bar in dogging position when said retractor is in normal non-retracting position, a slot in said outside spindle, said slot being arranged to at times receive the dogging arm of said dogging bar to dog said outside spindle to said retractor housing, a key-operated cylinder lock mechanism in said outer knob, an actuator for said locking bar operatively connected to said cylinder lock mechanism, whereby the locking bar may be drawn into dogging position by the turning of said cylinder lock mechanism by a removable key.

The door knob lock and latch set as defined in claim 1, in which the actuator for said locking bar comprises a helically slotted cylinder disposed within the outside spindle and adapted to engage the dogging arm of said dogging bar, said cylinder being operatively connected for turning to the key operable lock mechanism in the outer knob.
