Description

(No Model.)
D. 0. WHITE 8v J. COOPER.
NITED. STATES truce.
ATENT DANIEL O. YVHITE AND JOSEPH COOPER, OF PERRY, NEW YORK.-
WAGON-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,360, dated December 19, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it. known that we, DANIEL 0. WHITE and JOSEPH COOPER, of Perry, in the county of Wyoming and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Wagon-Jacks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
teferring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of myimprovcd wagon-jack; Fig.2, an elevation of the same, viewed as indicated by the arrow as in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a view from over the same, in which the lever and.
hail are not shown, drawn to a larger scale.
A is the body of thejaek, which is made of the two parallel side pieces or walls, I) I), front piece or wall. g, and rear piece or wall, 11, together forming a case or parallel race, Ir, in which the vertically-moving follower B slides, the parts or walls I), b, and g entering a foot piece, D, as shown. Au iron band,f, incloses the four walls I), b, g, and [L at the top thereof, to strengthen and hold such parts together, and to form a firm-and adequate rest for holding the pivot ot' the lever. A lever, O, having side straps, e e, spanning the bandf, is
hung to said band by means of a horizontal pivot-bolt, a, passing through the said bandf. The upper bent ends of the side straps, e e, of the lever are each provided with an eye, l, which receive respectively the inward-turned ends i of a pendent bail, (I. At the rear side of the body A the piece It and sides I) bare cut away at p, as shown in Fig. 1, uncovering the rear edge of the follower 15, which at that point is provided with a series of oblique notches, c, in which to receive the lower end of the bail (Z. By means of the bends in the side straps, e e, of the lever at the pivot a,
when the lever is carried down to its lowest position and resting against the body A at n, as shown in full lines in Fig. l,the bail swings by or beyond the pivot a, or into such a position that a downward pull upon the hail from the loaded follower B tends to urge the lever more firmly against the body A. This looks the lever and rigidly supports the follower in position in the body and under the weight of the axle.
In using this jack it is first placed under the axle to be raised, and the follower B raised by hand till its upper end touches the axle. The lever is then raised, as shown in dotted position in Fig. 1, to allow the bail to enter automatically one of the notches c of the follower, when by forcing the lever to its lowest position against the body, as shown, the axle is raised and automatically upheld, as desired. To let the axle down the lever is simply raised by hand to allow the follower to descend in the race 76 of the body or case A.
WVe claim as our invention- Ina wagon-jack. the combination of the rectangular hollow case A, formed as described and mounted on a single foot-piece, said case surrounded at the top by an angular metal bandf, formed with lateral projecting bolts an, and the follower B, formed as described and vertically movable in said case, with the pronged lever C, said prongs pivoted at a a and connected at their outer ends to the ends of the loop d, substantially as shown and specified.
