Application July 28, 1952, Serial nol sorszz 3 Claims. (01. 2-195) I This invention relates to head wear and more particularly to the molded type of, uniform cap of the so-called military type, and is an improvement over the cap shown in our Patent No.
, In the cap shown in the above patent, the body frame, stayer and peak are all molded in one piece, and although it is an improvement over the manufacturing methods used prior to this patent, it is limited in its use, in that, when a peak or stayer isv broken, the cap ,must be discarded. In this invention, if a stayer, peak or sweat band is broken or worn out, the part may be easily replaced by the user without tools or experience in the cap making art, or the covers may be changed to suit the user.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a molded body frame having indentations to receive, and frictionally hold, a cover and sweat band and having means to interchangeably hold a peak and stayer.
An additional object of this invention is to provide a new and improved molded frame that will be cheaper to produce and provide for interchangeable peaks, stayers, covers and sweat bands.
A further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved uniform cap frame having a homogeneous body and removable peak and stayer, that may be easily replaced when broken, without tools.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the invention is more fully set forth.
For a better understanding of the invention and the objects thereof reference is made to the accompanying drawings wherein a particular form of the invention is disclosed by way of example. The drawings when used in conjunction with the following description explain the structure and operation that embodies the principles of the invention and is emphasized in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view showing a uniform cap embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the body or frame, with the stayer and peak positioned thereon;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of Fig. 2 with the stayer and peak shown in dotted lines after removal;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, except that the stayer has been removed;
Figure 5 is a view of the underside of the frame with the peak removed;
Figure 6 shows a modified form of cover tightener, hook type;
. 2v Figure 7 shows a modified form of 'cover tightener, elastic type;
Figure 8 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through cap. shown in Fig. 1; and
Figure 9 is a partial view similar to that shown in Fig. 8, except that there is shown a modified form for attaching the peak and stayer to the frame.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings- In the construction shown in the drawings a particular form of cap has a removable cloth cover piece I I, which is reinforced by a stiffener l2 positioned near its top, while the walls or sides |3- are converged downwardly. The body or frame I4 of the cap encompasses the head of the user and is preferably formed of semi-rigid material but flexible and light enough for such'use and is preferably made of a conventional type of molded plastic. The body is ring-shaped and substantially formed with walls I5. The stayer 16 projects upwardly in an angular direction from the front wall of the body-ring to form the skeleton for supporting the cover piece II and stiffener l2. The stayer is provided with a slot 49 to act as a base for fastening the cover H and the ornament, insignia or badge I! used to give an official standing to the cap. The ring portion of the body is formed with ventilation holes l8 positioned transversely therethrough. A peripheral groove I9 is located in the outer face of the upper area of the frame [4 and acts as a seat to receive and hold a snap binder 20 formed at the bottom of the cover piece I I. An interior peripheral groove 2| is formed in the lower side of the inner face of the frame I4 to receive a self-tightening binder 22 attached to a replaceable sweat band 23 to hold it to the inner wall of the frame without sewing. The upper edge of the front portion of the frame [4 is provided with a slot 24 and an indentation It) to receive a tit 25 and button 26 attached to the lower end of the stayer I6 to hold the stayer and frame together. The stayer may be removed by pulling it out of the slot 24 and replaced with another when desired. This arrangement provides a quick-detachable connection between the stayer and the frame. An angular slot 21 having an indentation 28 is positioned at the lower front end of the frame to receive and hold an interchangeable peak 29. The peak has a tit 30 that fits into the indentation 28 to hold the peak in place until it is removed by pulling it out of the slot 2'! when it is desired to change peaks. This arrangement provides a quick-detachable conthe cap. The braid band 3| can be stretched to allow the binder 20 to be lifted out of the groove I9 and the cover .piece- H; removed; A. hook member 35 is positioned-near thetop .of'the stayer I6, for supporting the stiffener l2 near the top of the cover piece H. The lower end of the cover piece H is provided with a tightening,
means preferably comprising a hook member 315 adjustably positioned into holes 3! (see Fig. 63 or it may be provided with an elastic member 48 (see Fig. 7). A modified form of peak and stayer attachment is shown in Fig. 9, wherein the frame "'38 is provided with a 'tit- 3-9 and projection 50 to fit, into a slot 40 and indentationii in a stayer W to hold it thereto. The lower end of the frame 38 has a tit and project-ion 52* at the lower end to fit into aslot 43 and indentation 53 in the peak 84. Various modifications may be made in the means for fastening the peak and stayer to the frame and be within the scope of the inven- "tion. A shelf 41 on the frame supports'the lower edge of the braid'band,
While but two general forms of the invention are shown in the drawings and described in the V specification, it, is notdesired to limit this applicationfor patent to these particular forms as it is appreciated that other forms could be made that would use the same principles and come within the scope of-"the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. A convertible uniform cap comprising a molded frame having upper and lower front portions and adapted to encompass the head of the wearer, a stayer having front and rear faces, quick-detachable intelflQBk-il between the bottom of the stayer and the upper front portion of the frame, a cover above the frame having a front portion encompassing the front face of the stayenjntemocking means between the lower peripheral portion, of, the cover and the upper peripheral portion of the frame, a stiffener ring Within, the, upper portion of the cover, a hook member attached to the upper end of the back face of the stayer and maintaining the stiffener ring in place, a peak, and quick-detachable interlocking means between the lower front portion of the frame and the inner edge of the peak.
2. A convertible uniform cap as set forth in claim '1, including a sweat band, and indented fastening means positioned in the frame to receive said sweat band.
3. A convertible uniform cap asset forth; in claim 1, wherein the interlocking means between the; cover-and the frame consist of a peripheral internal-protrusion carried by the cover and cooperating with a peripheral external groove on the frame,
