MECHANICAL TELEPHONE.
No. 269,030. Patented Dec. 1 2, 1882.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
N. PETERS. PMlo-Lrthngnphu. Wuhinglon D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES EGAN, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE M. JE\VETT,
OF SAME PLACE.
MECHANICAL TELEPHONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,030, dated December 12, 1882,
(X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES EGAN, of Zanesville, in the'county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Telephones, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to increase upon the line the vibrations given to the diaphragm by the voice, so as to insure greater loudness and clearness of tone; and to that end the invention consists in employing two diaphragms, which are connected by wires that diverge from the center ofthe outer diaphragm, and areattached to the inner one at points between its center and edge, as shown and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate correspoiiding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front view of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a face view of the multiplying-diaphragm.
A is the base uponwhich the instrument is supported by posts a a.
B is the instrument proper, of which b is the apertured bottom piece, and c is a box fitted with mouth-piece d.
e is a diaphragm fitted beneath the mouthpiece d,"and f is a second diaphragm, fitted over the aperture in the bottom. piece, I).
g g are wires, preferably four in number, connected at the center of the diaphragm c, and
also connected at their other ends to the dia phragm f about half-way between its center and outer end. Wires g are taut, and to the center of the second diaphragnnf, is connected the main wire it.
In operation the outer diaphragm, a, being vibrated by the act of speaking into the mouthpiece, the vibrations are communicated by the wires 9 to the second diaphragm,f, and the wiresg being connected at a distance from the center of the diaphragm f, the vibrations are 5 consequently amplified at the center of the second diaphragm, and these amplified vibrations pass upon the main-line wire.
lhe instrumentis provided with an electric call-bell, i, and circuit-closer k for calling in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of two diaphragms and the wires g, which are attached to the outer dia- 53 phragin at its center, diverging thence toward the inner one, to which they are connected at points between its center and edge, substantially as described.
