Claims.
surfacing machine requiring no gears or pinions;
(5) To provide a novel and improved portable surfacing machine of simple but rugged construction;
(6) To provide a novel and improved portable surfacing machine offering a firm grip and control to the operator;
(7) To provide a novel and improved surfacing machine adapted to reach into corner spaces not accessible to other types of surfacing ma- (8V) To provide a novel and improved sanding machine which does not leave large swirls or circles on the sanded surface.
Additional objects of my invention will be brought out in the following description of a preferred embodiment of the same taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a three-dimensional view of a surfacing machine embodying the features of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view o1' the machine of Figure 1 with the cover removed to expose interior construction;
Figure 3 is a view in section taken in the plane 3-3 of Figure 2; and Y Figure 4 isha view in section taken in the plane 4 4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings for the details of my invention in its preferred form, the same utilizes a surfacing plate I to which is removably afhxed surfacing material such as a sheet 3 of sandpaper or bufng cloth, or the like, as the case may be, such materia1 being applied in any suitable manner. In the specific embodiment illustrated, the sheet of the material is folded over the side edges of the plate and maintained taut by clips 5 interconnected by coil springs 1. A layer 9 of felt or other resilient material covering the under surface of the plate serves to cushion the sheet of sanding or buiiing material and allows it to conform to slight irregularities in the surface being worked on.
The plate is oscillatable with respect to a drive shaft support or housing II mounted thereon and which encloses the operating mechanism of the machine. The housing is of hollow cylindrical form and is journalled about a bearing disk I3 which is solidly affixed tothe upper surface of the plate substantially centrally thereof by a plurality of machine screws I5. A pair of such screws in diametrical relationship to each other have laterally perforated heads to serve as anchors for the lower ends of a pair of coil springs I1, which at their upper ends encircle a diametrically mounted cross-bar I 9 in the upper region of the housing. The springs as thus installed serve to hold the housing to the plate while at the same time permitting the desired oscillatory movement of the plate with respect to the, housing. n

The upper rim of the housing is recessed and undercut to receive disk cap or cover 29 which is retained in position by the circular retainer spring 3 I.
In utilizing the machine for its intended purposes, it is securely grasped with one hand about the housing which enables a firm grip to be had, and power is applied to the drive shaft. The accompanying rotation of the cam between the arms of the yoke transforms the rotational movement of the drive shaft into oscillatory move- While the plate I is preferably rectangular in form and of a size to take standardized squares of sandpaper, additional sanding surface may be had by adding to the front end 0f the plate, a section whose edge is preferably arced on a circle coinciding with the arc of movement of the front corners of the plate.
The device as thus illustrated and described may be manufactured very economically in that it is entirely devoid of gears and pinions and requires but a minimum of parts and otherwise fulfills the objects of my invention as previously noted.
Although I have disclosed my invention in its preferred form and in considerable detail, the same is subject to alteration and modification Without departing from the underlying principles involved, and I accordingly do not desire to be limited in my protection to the specific details. illustrated and described except as may be necessitated by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. VA surfacing machine comprising a fiat plate adapted to receive surfacing material on its underside, means for removably securing such surfacing material to said plate, a drive shaft support rotatively mounted with respect to said plate to permit. oscillatory movement of one relative to the other, a drive shaft journalled in said support at an angle to the vertical with said plate in a horizontal plane, a yoke, means connecting said yoke to said plate in off-center relationship to the center of such oscillatory movementand in straddling relationship to said drive shaft, and a cam on said drive shaft in contact with both arms of said yoke.

other, a drive shaft passing through said support at an angle to the vertical with said plate in a horizontal plane and journalled therein, a yoke, means connecting said yoke to said plate in off--y center relationship to the center of such oscillatory movement and in straddling relationship to said drive shaft, and a cam on said drive shaft in-contactwith both arms of'said yoke.
3.r A surfacing machine comprising aV flat plate adapted to receive surfacing material on its underside, means for removably securing such surfacing material toY said plate, a drive shaft support on said plate disposed substantially centrally thereof, a bearing intervening between saidv plate and said support to permit oscillatory movement of one relative to the other, a drive shaft passing through said support at an angle to the vertical with said plate in a horizontal plane andljournalled therein, a yoke, means connecting 4 said yoke to said plate in off-center relationship to the center of such oscillatory movement and in straddling relationship to said drive shaft, and a cam on said drive shaft in contact with both arms of Said yoke. l
4. A surfacing machine comprising a at plate adapted to receive surfacing material on its underside, means for removably securing such surfacing material to said plate, a bearing immovably' affixed to said plate, a cylindrical housing journalled on said bearing, and means for oscillating said plate with respect to said housing, said means involving a drive shaft entering4 said housing at an angle to the vertical with said plate in a horizontal plane and journalled at opposite points in the wall thereof, a yoke aflixed to said bearing in off-center relationship to said cylindrical housing and in straddling relationship to said drive shaft, and a cam on said drive shaft in contact With both arms of said yoke.
5. A surfacing machine comprising a flat plate adapted to receive surfacing material on its underside, means for removably securing such surfacing material tol said plate, a disk bearing immovably affixed to` the upper surfacev of said plate, a cylindrical housing journalled on said disk hearing, and means for oscillating said plate with respect to said housing, said means involving a drive shaft entering said housing at anangle to` the vertical' with said plate in a horizontalr plane and j'ournall'ed at` opposite points in the Wall thereof, a yoke aixed to said disk bearing in off-center relationship tol said cylindrical housing and in stI-'addlirlgV relationship to said drive shaft, and a cam on said` drive shaft in conv tact WithA both arms ofY said yoke.
