Description

A. ODELL.
Thin-Coupling. No. 26,859. Patented Jan. 17, 1860.
N-PETERS, PHOTOLJTNOGRAFHER WASMNGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM ODELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ATTACHING THILLS TO VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM ODELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings for Fastening Thills to Axles of lVagons and other Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a pa rt of this specification, the same letters of reference Whenever they occur referring to like parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the fastener. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal cut section of the same. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, are side views of detached parts of the fastener.
Letter A, represents a clip holder secured to the axle of the wagon by the usual means for such purposes. The head of this clipholder, is formed with a socket like cavity, opening from the upper and back side of it. In this cavity is fitted the end of the thill irons B. These ends are cylindrical in form, and of such diameter as to nearly fill the cavity of the clip holder; but are below the longitudinal axis of the thills, so that when in their seat in the clip holder, they form a hook like connection, which is prevented 26,859, dated January 17, 1860.
from disengaging by means of a flat headed bolt C, secured by a nut and screw threads, through the clip holder, directly back of and against the cylindrical end of the thill iron. By this means a cavity is formed in the head of the clip holder with an opening sufiicient for the shank of the thill iron, but much too small for the cylindrical formation at the end, drawing out of it. To avoid the wear of the metals, as well as the rattle of two metals working together, a packing of leather D, is used in the cavity of the clip holder. As this is confined in a close box, it will last almost as long as the metals themselves.
Having now described my improved coupling, I will proceed to support What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the i United States.
What I claim is The use of the flat headed bolt C, in combination with the clip holder A, and thill iron B, made and operating in the manner, and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
ADAM ODELL.
Vitnesses C. L. BARRITT, F. ODELL.
