3 Claims.
This invention relates to a dispensing package or carton for a roll of sheet material for dispensing lengths of such sheet material, and particularly to improved means for opening such a package. These packages are illustrated by the wellknown household waxed paper roll package.
Such packages are customarily provided with a serrated metal cutter blade or knife afiixed to a edge of one wall of the carton, against which the sheet material may be pulled to out free a particular length of the sheet. This blade or knife is frequently at least partially exposed outside the confines of the package, so that in opening the carton to expose the contents for use, there is danger of cutting the fingers or hand on the blade. My invention provides opening means which eliminates this danger of injury.
The construction by which I provide this improvement will be readily apparent from the following description and drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a paperboard blank for making the dispensing carton,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the package formed from the blank shown in Figure 1,
Figure 8 is a cross-sectional view taken along the lines 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a perspective view, partially cut away, showing the carton being opened,
Figure 5 is a perspective view, partially cut away, showing the cover of the carton released for opening, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view showing sheet material being withdrawn from a roll of sheet material retained in the package.
Referring first to Figure l, the carton is made from a single paperboard blank, suitably cut and scored to provide a front wall Ill, 2. bottom wall H, a rear wall 2, a cover it hinged to the rear wall, and a cover flap I4 hinged to the cover. Front wall it is provided at each end with end flaps l5. Similarly, bottom wall H and rear wall l2 are provided with end flaps l5 and I1, respectively. Dust iiops Ha are hingedly connected to a side edge of flaps [7.
A central portion it of cover I3 and cover flap I4 is separately defined, by a perforation line I9 in cover it and a out in cover flap M. This separately defined portion serves as means to secure the cover in closed position and also as an opening tab, as will be explained later. Hinge line 25, by which cover flap It is hingedly connected to cover 113, extends through tab 18 as at 22. A portion of tab it lying within cover i3 is cut through by a out line 23 and is scored along lines 24 and 25. These score lines and the cut line meet at a common point adjacent hinge line 22, and radiate outwardly to intersect perforation line [8, as best illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The portion of tab l8 lying within cover flap id is provided with a cut score line 26 parallel to hinge line 2!. Cut score 26 is out through the surface of the carton blank which will form the interior of the carton; with out line 20 it defines a peelable area 38 the function of which will be later described.
The free edge of front wall H! is provided with a serrated metal cutter blade or knife 21 suitably affixed thereto.
The carton is formed from the blank shown in Figure 1 by folding front and rear walls H] and i2 perpendicularly to rear wall ii, and then inwardly folding in succession end flaps l6, l5 and ll, the end flaps being thereby overlapped and glued or otherwise adhered together. After the carton is thus set up, a roll 28 of sheet material, such as wax paper, transparent film or metal foil, of suitable dimension to fit in the carton, is positioned in the carton as will be read ily apparent from Figures 8, 4 and 5, and the dust flaps ila are folded over the roll.
After the roll 28 is positioned in the carton, the cover is closed with the cover flap I 4 positioned within the carton, interiorly of front wall It, but with that free portion of tab 18 which is cut from cover flap I4 positioned to extend exteriorly of the carton so as to overlap front wall it. An adhesive or heat scalable coating 29 is applied to the exteriorly extending portion of tab it between out score 26 and out line 20, and the tab is then adhered to the exterior of front wall Hi. This is best shown in Figures 2 and 3.
The package is thus presented as shown in Figure 2, wherein the metal cutter or knife 21 is exposed and presents an edge which may prove dangerous when opening the carton. It is a purpose of my invention to reduce the probability of an injury from this cause.
When it is desired to dispense lengths of the contained sheet material, the package is opened by grasping the carton from the bottom in one hand and then depressing tab is with the thumb of the other hand in the area defined by score lines 2 3 and 25 and perforation line l9. Since out line 23 provides an initial line of weakness in this portion of the tab that is being depressed, separation of the tab from cover 13 along perforation line it will be initiated at the point of intersection of out 23 and line [9. This separation will continue outwardly in both directions along perforation line l9, and as it progresses from the previously mentioned intersection toward each of score lines 24 and 25, the two depressed portions of tab l8 lying respectively between cut 23 and score lines 24 and 25 will tend to hinge downwardly about said score lines. Conportion of the hand necessarily adjacent knife 21 during the opening process ever being in danger of contact with the knife. This is because as tab 3 was separated from cover l3, it remained adhered to the front wall Ii] and was depressed in the areas previously mentioned to provide a complete protective cover for the thumb over knife 21.
The pressure of the thumb normal to front wall l8 may be continued even after the tab I8 is separated from cover [3. If this is done the tab will also be separated from front wall It. Since only the area of tab it between cut score 26 and out line 26 has been adhered to front wall I0, this area provides a peelable surface 30 which will readily separate from the rest of the tab to permit the tab to be torn from front wall l0, the peelable surface 38 remaining adhered to front wall it, as illustrated in Figure 6. It will be apparent from Figure 5 that during the continuance of pressure of the thumb normal to front wall It to completely remove tab l8 from the carton, the tab continues to provide a protective cover for the thumb as the tab is drawn outwardly over knife 2?.
The cover may then be opened and the sheet material 3| readied for dispensing from the roll 28. This is done by leading the sheet material between the front wall Hi and the cover flap It, so that it is dispensed adjacent knife 21. At any desired time, the sheet material may then be withdrawn, and pulled downwardly against knife 21 to sever the needed length. This is illustrated in Figure 6. The vacant space or area in cover l3 left by the removal of tab l8 provides a ready access opening for grasping the sheet material for successive dispensings thereof.
The score lines 24 and 25 obviously might be increased in number, or their function performed by equivalent means, without their being any departure from my invention. Likewise, other details shown and described herein might be varied without removing the article thus formed from the scope of my invention. While various details have been above described and illustrated, it is to be understood that my invention is to be limited only as specifically set forth in the following claims.
