SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,907, dated November 21, 1882.

1' 0 all whom it may concern Beit known that I, WILLIAMH. LEININGER,

of Salem, in the county of Marion and State of 7 Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Amalgamator, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to facilitate obtaining the gold contained in the sand of the beach and the bottom of the sea.

The invention consists in a device to which a series of amalgamated plates are attached, which device is drawn through the auriferous sand, which is thereby stirred and raised, so that it passes between these plates, the gold being retained on these plates.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is -a plan View of my improved amalgamator. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the same.

A series of barrow-teeth, A, preferably of shovel pattern, are attached to the cross-bars of a frame, B, made of any suitable material. The agitators or teeth can be made of any desired suitable metal. Aframe, H, is held above the frame B by meansof short posts F. Amalgamated silver or silver-plated copper plates 0 are secured transversely and horizontally on the frames B and H, the plates on the lower frame, B, being slightly in advance of the plate 0 on the upper frame; H. The said plates are preferably provided with riffles or corrugations, or are checkered, as shown, so that they 3 5 will more readily hold the amalgam.

The device is operated by means of a steamtug in deep water, or by a horse or some other suitable power on the beach or in shallow water. Thereby the auriferous sand is stirred and raised, and passes over and between the plates 0, on which the gold contained in the sand is retained, the sand pressing through between the plates.

Havingthus'fully described my invention, I 5 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An amalgamator made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a device provided with a series of amalgam- 5o ated plates or devices and teeth or agitators, and suitable propelling means, as set forth.

2. In an amalgamator, the combination, with the frame 13, of the agitators or teeth A and the amalgamated plates 0, attached to the frame B, and suitable propelling means, substantially as herein shown and described, and for thepurpose set forth.

3. In an amalgamator, the combination, with the frames B and H, of the agitators or teeth A and the amalgamated plates (J, secured on the frames B and H, and suitable propelling means, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
