ELECTRIC PUMPING APPARATUS.
Patented Nov. 21, 1882'.
' UNtTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
CHARLES C. PECK AND WILLIAM H. GHAPMAN, OF MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT.
ELECTRIC PUM PING APPARATUS.
SI ECIFIGATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 267,710, dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed February 17,1882. (NomodeL) V To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES C. PECK and WILLIAM H. CHAPMAN, both of Middlebury, in the county of Addison and State of Vermont, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Pumping Apparatus, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is
a specification.
.10 Our present invention relates to the application of electromagnetic force to the operating ofa diaphtagin-pump; and it consists, first, in the combination of a receiving-chamber provided with suitable inlet and discharge valves,
and renderedexpansible and contractible by means of a double-flanged elastic diaphragm, forming a portion oi the walls of said chamber,
'an armature extending across and secured to the top of said chamber, anelectro-magnet so disposed relative to said chamber and the-armature that its poles shall be over said arma ture, and means of passing a current of elec- .tricity IlJIOLlgll the coils of said magnet as will be further described.
2 ltt'urther consists in certain novel constructions and arrangements of the parts, which will be best understood b reference to the description of the drawings, and to the claims, to be hereinafter given.
0 Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of the pump with the case iti section. Fig. 2
is a vertical-section on linemw on Fig. 1, and
. Fig. 3 is a plan of the commutator-spring.
A is a metallic casing, intended to be sub- 5 merged or partially submerged in the water of a well or other source of supply, and within which is supported, near its upper part, the pumping apparatus, constructed and arranged as follows:
4.0 [A suction-pipe, 1 3, is firmly secured in an opening in the bottom of the casing A, and projects a short distance below said casingbottom and upward a distance about. equal to three-fourths of the height of said casing, and
has firmly secured to its upper end the receiving-chamber O, composed of casting a, provided with the upwardly-projecting annular lip or wall a, the double-flanged diaphragm I), and. the disk c, provided with the downwardlyproject-inglip c, all secured together by brazing or otherwise, so as to form acomplete chamber which shall be air and water tight, except as hereinafter mentioned.
The suction-pipe B is provided with an inletvalve, d, and the chamber 0 is provided with a discharge orilice, communicating through the discharge-valve 6 with the pipe I), which projects downward from the chamber'G, but does not reach the bottom thereof. The valves 01 and e are preferably of rubber, and of that kind resembling the mitrahvalve of the heart; but any other well-known hydraulic valve may be used, if desired. The suction-pipe B also supports an electro-magnet composed of the coils E and E, arranged upon opposite sides of the chamber 0 and in upright positions, the upper ends of their coresfandf being bent inward toward each other at right angl s to that portion within said coils, so that their ends lie just above the upper surface of the iron armature F, secured to the upper plate or disk, 0, of the receiving-chainber O in a horizontal position. as shown in Fig. 1, said cores being madein one piece with the horizontal harf as shown; or they may be made separate therefrom and set in sockets formed therein in a Well-kn0wn manner.
G is a U shaped stiff spring-frame, between the upper ends of which is sprung the commntator'spring H, so that it shall assume a slightly ellipticalshape, as shown in Fig. 2, the center of said spring H having riveted- "fillereiil a platinum contact-point,g, which projects upon either side of said spring a short distance, as shown, said spring being provided at each end with short projecting lugs g g, which embrace the edges of the spring-frame G, to prevent lateral displacement of the commutator-spring H, which is also prevented from being displaced vertically by notches formed in the inner faces of the upright portions of the spring-frame G, into which the ends of the spring H enter, as shown in Fig. 2.
Upon the upper side of the upper horizontal portion of'the coref are secured the metal con tact-plates h and hf, which are insulated from each other and project inward, one above and theother below the commutator-spring H, as shown in Fig. 2. The under side of the plate 'h is faced with platinum and connected with one end of the wire of the coils E and E, the opposite end of said wire passing out through the plug I, of hard rubber or other suitable insulating material, set in the bottom of the casing A, and is connected by the wire 6 to one pole of the battery J, the opposite pole of-said battery being connected by the wire j to the metallic frame of the pump.
L is a portion of the pipethrough which the water is discharged from the interior of the casing A, said pipe extending upward to the point where it'is desired to deliver the water.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The parts being in the positions shown in the drawings, if the circuit be completed by con-.
meeting the wires 7: and j to the battery, the current of electricity will pass through the coils E and E, magnetizing the coresfa-ndf, which attract the armature F and move it,'with the disk 0, upward till the armatureis in contact with the under surface ot'said cores, the flanges ot' the diaphragm springing sufficient to permit such upward movement, and thus increase the size of the receiving-chamber O, which tends to form in said chamber apartial vacuum, the result of which is the opening of the valve d and the admission of suflicient water to destroy said vacuum. The upward movement of the armature F'and the upper head of the chamber 0 causes a corresponding upward movement of the spring-frame G and ot' the two ends of the commutator-spring H, and as its center is already in contact with the plate h.'and cannot be moved upward, it is made to assume a curve the reverse of that shown in the drawings, and its contact with the plate h is broken, thus destroying the circuit through the coils E and E, when, the coresfand f no longer attracting the armature, the chamber 0 contracts by virtue of the reaction of the spring-diaphragm b, and causing the valve 6 to open and water to be discharged through the pipe D into the interior of the casing A, from which an equal amount is discharged through the pipe L. The contraction of the chamber 0 causes the center of the commutatorpring H to be again thrown in contact with the plate It by the plate It, preventing a downward movement of the center of said spring, thus closing the circuit and causing the armature F to be again attracted and moved upward by the magnet, which operations may be repeated indefinitely. The stroke is short; but as the area of the disk 0 is many times larger than that of the suction-pipe B, and as the strokes are repeatedat the rate of, say, one thousand a minute, it follows that a considerable quantity of water can be pumped in the course of an hour. p
The casing A, inclosing the pump, serves the double purpose of an air-chamber to equalize the pressures and to enable the pump to be submerged and still be operated in'air.
We do not in this application claim broadly the commutator composed of the spring H, spring-frame G, and contact-studs hand It, as this is claimed in a separate application filed as a division of this case. j,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In an electric pumping apparatus, the combination of a reoeiving-cham ber composed in part of expansible side walls, an armature secured to said receiving-chamber, an electromagnet, meansot' causing the passage of a current of electricity through the coils of said magnet, and suitableinlet and discharge'valves for controlling the flow of water to and from said receiving-chamber, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in an electric pumping apparatus, of the casing A, provided with the discharge-pipeL and the inlet-pipe B, a pump located within said casing, near its top, and communicating with said inlet-pipe, an electromagnet for operating said pump, and a commutator for controlling the current of electricity, both located in said casing, and a battery located outside of said casing and connected by suitable wires with the magnet within said casing, substantially as described.
3. In an electric pumping apparatus, the combination of the chamber (J, composed of the castings a and c, and the doubleflanged diaphragm b, the armature F, an electro-magnet, the spring frame G, the commutatorspring H, and the contact-studs h and h, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. The combination of the chamber 0, composed in part of the double-flanged springdiaphragm b, the armature F, secured to said chamber, the two coils E and E, located upon opposite sides of the chamber 0, the coresff of said coils having their upper portions extending toward each other over the armature, as set forth, the spring-frame G, the commutator-spring H, the plates h and It, secured to one of the cores f or f, but insulated from.
each other, and suitable inlet and discharge valves for controlling the flow of water to and from the chamber 0, suhstantiall y as described. Executed at Middlebury, Vermont, this 10th day of February, A. D. 1882.
