I The present invention relates to tools. for debarking. or trimming logs or posts and more particularly relates to a log: trimming too-l attachment for use with a portable power driven chain saw.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a log trimming tool attachment that may he quickly and simplyattached to the motor housing of a portable chain saw whereby the log trimming tool or pole peeler may be driven by the saw motor.

Thus, it will be seen that driving means [8 comprises pulley 50, shaft 44 and cam 48.
Spaced, threaded bores 58 are provided in the surfaces of bars 30 and 32 and web 34 opposite the attaching surfaces of these members to plate l2. A rectangular closure plate 80 is mounted on the surfaces of the bars 32, 32 and the web 34 and fasteners 62 extend through this closure plate and are threadedly received in the apertures 58 to secure the plate to the bars and web. By means of this construction, a longitudinal, open end recess 54 opening at the end 20 of the mountin plate i2 is formed. Thus, plate 60, bars 30, 32, web 34 and that portion of the surface of plate 52 between the bars and web define the guide means it for the log trimming tool [4.
Disposed within the longitudinal recess 64 is a .shank (it of the log trimming tool l4. To maintain the end of the tool shank 56 in abutting engagement with the cam 48, closure plate 60 is provided with a longitudinal slot G8 which corresponds in length approximately to twice the radial distance between the true center, of disk 68 and the eccentric mounting of this disk. A threaded bore '12 is provided in the tool shaft in alignment with the slot 68 and a screw threaded fastener iii extends through the slot 68 and is threadedly received in the bore 12 of the shank 66 thereby permitting reciprocal movement of the tool shank 65 within the longitudinal recess 54.
To maintain the end of the tool shank 66 in engagement with the eccentrically mounted disk 48, a resilient means 74 is provided in the form of a coil spring. One end of the coil spring M is secured to the fastenerfiZ extending into the web 3 While the other end of spring 14 is secured to the fastener ill, thereby constantly biasing the end of the tool shank 56 into abutting engagement with the cam 43 whereby rotation of the cam shaft 44 will cause reciprocation of the tool shank B6. Secured to the other end of the tool shank B6 is a log trimmin blade 16 having a cutting edge 18 thereon. Upon reciprocation of the tool shank 65, the blade 16 exerts a highly advantageous chipping action that removes bark from trees or posts in an extremely efiicient manner.
Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the -i'fl0lllltll'lg' and operation of the attachment in a bark Stli?pil1g operation can be clearly observed. Shown in this figure is a conventional portable,
power-driven chain saw designated generally by the numeral 813, the housing of which has aforwardly extending vertical wall 82 thereon. Horisontally spaced studs 84 project laterally. from -'tl1e wall 32 and these studs are received between the edges of slot 28in attaching plate l2. To maintain the attaching plate [2 rigidlyzrupon the wall 82, a pressure plate 86 is disposed on the studs 84 so that the plate I2 is confined between this pressure plate and the side Wall 82. Nuts 85 are threaded onto the studs 84 and frictionally retain the plate l2 between the pressure plate 86 and the chain saw housing side wall 82. A pulley 9t adapted to be driven by the motor (not shown) of the portable chain saw 85 is mounted on the housing of the chain saw 3 and a V-belt 92 interconnects the pulley of the attachment with th pulley es. Thus, upon actuation of the pulley $9 rotation of pulley 50 will result thereby causingthe tool shank 66 of the tool M to reciprocate within the guide means I6 of the log trimming attachment and thereby effectively chip the bark from a log or post as indicated at 94.
In view of the simplicity of the attachment, further description is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications in the construction and arrangement of th device will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration "of'the foregoing specification and the accompanying drawings, applicant does not intend to be limited to the exact construction shown and described but may resort to any changes and modifications that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A log trimming attachment for use with a portable chain saw motor housing, said attachment comprising a mounting plate adapted to be secured to the chain saw motor housing, guide means mounted on said mounting plate, a log trimming tool carried by said guide means for reciprocating movement therein, driving means on said mounting plate adapted to be operatively connected to the chain saw motor, cam means interconnecting said driving means and said tool for reciprocably movin said tool, and resilient means maintaining said tool in abutting engagement with said cam means.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said guide means includes a housing having a longitudinal recess therein, said tool havinga portion thereof slidably disposed in said recess.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said guide means includes a hOllSll'lg having a longitudinal recess therein, said tool having a portion thereof slidably disposed in said recess, said housing comprising a U-shaped member secured along one side thereof to said mounting plate and having a detachable closure plate mounted on the other side thereof.
4. The combination of claim 1 wherein said mounting plate has an elongated slot opening at one edge thereof for securing the same to the chain saw motor housing.
5. A log trimming attachment adapted to be mounted on a portable chain saw motor housing, said attachment comprising a flat mounting plate, a shaft journaled transversely through said plate, guide means adjacent said shaft secured to one side of saidmountin plate, a disk eccentrically mounted on said shaft adjacent said guide ,means, a tool shank guidingly received in said uide means and having one end in abutting engagement with said disk, a pulley on said shaft adapted to drivingly rotate the shaft, resilient 'means maintaining said tool shank in abutting (engagement with the disk upon rotation of the shaft,. and a cutter bladelcarried by said tool shank.

A log trimming attachment comprising an attaching plate, guide means mounted on said plate, a 10g trimming tool slidably received in said guide means, cam means rotatably mounted on said attachin plate and means operatively connecting said cam means to said tool, said tool being reciprocably slidable in said guide means upon rotation of said cam means, said guide means including a pair of spaced elongated members secured in parallel relation to one another on said plate, and a removable closure plate being secured to said bars in spaced parallel relation to said attaching plate, said closure plate havin a longitudinally disposedslot therein, said tool having a pin extending through said slot,
