iJNTTEn STATES PATENT EETcE.
FRANCIS 'W. SIBERT AND STEPHEN P. HURD, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
COMBINED POLE-TIP AND NECK-YOKE CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS W. SrBER'r and STEPHEN P. HURD, of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a newand Improved Combined Wagon-Pole Tip and Neck-Yoke Clamp, of which the following is al'ull, clear, and exact descriptron.
The object of our invention is to provide a combined wagon-pole tip or socket and neckyoke clamp of novel construction, which can be easily attached to and detached from the pole or neck-yoke, and which, when in use, will be self-adjusting to the movements of the neckyoke due to the motion of the team.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse longitudinal sectional elevation of the same, showing the neck-yoke in place and the end of the pole having the stud or pin for holding the tip or socket.
A represents the wagon-pole tip or socket; B, the neck yoke clamp; C, the neck yoke, and D the end of the wagon-pole.
The tip or socket A may be of any suitable size, and is cast with the internally grooved enlargement or bead a at its open end and with the perforated tongue I) at its forward or closed end.
The clamp 13 is composed of the semicirculat plates 0 c, which are hinged together, as shown at (I, provided with oppositely perforated flanges to receive a cross-bolt, and are adapted to be clasped around the neck-yoke C in the center and to be secured to the tongue I) of the tip or socket A by the bolt E. The bead a of the tip or socket A is notched or slotted, as shown ate, through to the internal groove,f, ofthe bead a, and the tip is thus adapted to be attached to the wagon-pole D by means of the strong plug or piu g, driven into the pole, as shown in Fig. 2. The pin or stud g is driven into the pole upon the upper side thereof, and the slot 0 is formed on the under SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,606, dated November 14, 1882.
- Application filedAugust14,1882. (ModeL) side of the socket A, so that the socket, when shoved upon the end of the pole, has to be turned axially to form the lock. 111 this manner the lock is made perfectly safe, avoiding all danger of the tip becoming accidentally detached when in use. This order of the pin and slot may be reversed, if desired. The pin is of such size relative to the sizeof the groove fthat the socket is free to rotate upon the pole, so that it will not interfere with the free up-and-down movcmentofthe ends of the neckyoke, due to the uneven movement of the horses. The yoke is also self-adjusting horizontally by means of the pivoted action which Thus constructed, it will be seen that the neckyoke is universal upon't-he pole, that it can be easily attached to and detached from the pole, and that the ordinary ring or leather usually attached to the center of the neck yoke for supporting the pole is dispensed, with. Besides, the device is cheap, durable, and ornamental.
. Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The tip or socket A, formed with the tongue b, in combination with the hinged plates 0 c, pivoted to the tongue I) by the bolt E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The tip or socket A, formed with the groovefand slot 6, in combination with the pole D, provided with the pin or stud g, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The Up A, formed with the groovef and slot 0 and perforated tongue I), in combination with the hinged semi-cylindrical plates 0 c, bolted to the tongue I), substantially as described.
