COLLAPSIBLE CARTON Filed Jan. 9, 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR.
Patented Apr. 13, 1954 Kenneth T. Buttery,

Mich.
Application January 9, 1951, Serial No. 205,183
8 Claims. Cl. 229-3 1) This invention relates to improvements in collapsible cartons.
The main objects of this invention are:
'First, to provide acarton which is well adapted for the packaging of confectionery, baked goods and the like and which supports the packaged articles so that they are not damaged or broken in merchandising.
Second, to provide a carton in which the artito follow. The invention is pointed out. in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a package utilizing my cartonand wrappedin transparent material, articles being illustratedin position there in by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the erected carton on a line corresponding to line 2--2 of Fig. 3.
is a transverse section on .a line corre- Fig. 3 spending to line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a corner ofacarton illustrating the relation of certain parts and steps in erecting.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the parts shown in Fig. 4 with the parts adjusted further to erected position. i Fig. .6 is an enlarged fragmentary view in section on a line corresponding to line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Fig. '7 is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the collapsed carton. For convenience in description, the terms side and end walls are used notwithstanding the fact that the carton illustrated is square. It will be 1 understood that it may be of any desired dimension and the walls designated herein as end walls might be longer than the walls designated as side walls. The use. of the terms side and end walls is believed to result in brevity;
'The embodiment of my invention illustrated is formed of a blank of suitable carton stock out and scored to provide a bottom I, side walls 2-2 hingedly connected to the bottom by the hinging scores 3-45, and end walls 4--4 hingedly connected to the bottom by the hinging scores 5-5. The end walls are provided with holder member extensions 5 which are hingedly connected to the upper edges of the end walls by the scores 7-7. The end walls and the holder members are provided with integral corner flaps 8 hinged- 1y connected to the ends of the end walls and holder members at 9, the hinging being desirably in the form of weakening perforations as distinguished from scoring and this is indicated in the drawing. In the preferred embodiment illustrated, the hinging lines 9 converge outwardly from the ends of the hinging scores 3.
The flap members 8. are provided with weakened folding lines II] which are disposed in an inclined relation to the hinging scores I and divide the corner members into end Wall flap sections II and holder member flap sections I2. The holder member flap sections have diagonal weakened folding lines I3. The side walls have diagonal weakened folding lines I4 extending from their end edges diagonally outward and providing hinging flaps I5 to which the corner flap sections I I of the corner flap members are secured, desirably by adhesive, as indicated at it in Fig. 6. With the parts thus arranged the side walls may be folded inwardly upon the bottom and the end walls and their extending holder members folded upon the collapsed side walls.
To erect the carton from its collapsed position as shown in Fig. 8 it is grasped at its ends and pressure of the thumb applied to the holder members will swing the end walls to erected position and the holder members into the inwardly inclined position resting upon the bottom as shown inFigs. 2 and 3. Owing to the arrangement of the hinging or folding scores for the corner members. there is a springable snap-like action when the holder members are swung to erected position which acts to hold the holder members in erected position and the holder members serve to brace and support the walls in erected position.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated is designed to package confections such as indicated at I1, Eskimo Pics, for example, having sticks Ill. The holder members are provided with edge recesses I9 and the recesses 20 being out of alignment with the recesses I9. These recesses are designed to receive the end of the packaged article H. The holder members are also provided with U-shaped slits 2| which are aligned with recesses of opposite walls and are adapted to receive the ends of the sticks [8. In packaging, the sticks are inserted in the openings 2! and the article 11 dropped into the notches. The carton is then desirably provided with a transparent wrapper 22 although it may be placed in a sleeve type of cover, or a telescoping cover may be provided as desired.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various other embodiments which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
