SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,349, dated November 14, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. G. HtiPFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Preserving Beer and other Malt Liquors; and the object is to furnish a verysimple and efficient device to prevent the ordinary corks used from being forced into the bottles by the pressure required to preserve the beer from fermenting, which is necessary during the process of preserving the beer.

The invention consists in an improved detach able cap or stopper-holder, made of rubber or its equivalent, and havingits top strengthened by a plate or solid disk of metal, either molded therein and entirely covered by the rubber or loosely placed into the cap and in position to bear on the top of the bottle, so that the top of the cap cannot yield when the pressure required for the preservation of the beer is exerted thereon, and the cork cannot then be forced into the bottle, and thereby the bursting of the bottle is preventethall of which will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.

Like letters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical cross-section of the improved cap or stopper-holder. 2 is a modification of the same.

In the accom panying drawings, A represents a cap, made of rubber or similar material, in the head or upper part of which is inserted a plate, B, of metal or other rigid material, which is molded in the cap itself and of such diameterthatitextends over the mouth of the bottle, so that when the pressure is applied to the exterior of the cap the top of the cap and the cork in the bottle cannot be forced into the bottle. Thus bnrstingofthe same isprevented.

The method of preserving or bottling beeris as follows: The temporary stopper-holders are placed over the stoppers in the bottles. The bottles so protected are inserted into a vat or vessel containing hot water, and after the pressure has been applied to them in the ordinary manner the stopper-holders are removed, when the bottles of beer are ready for transportation or shipment to any desired place. It will be readily seen that this is a very simple and efficient means for use in preserving or bottling beer, that prevents the unnecessary breakage of bottles, as is now the case during the operation of bottling beer, 850. The germs of fermentation in the bottles are destroyed by the heat applied to them.

I am aware that a rubber cap having a comparatively stiff top,to be used as a measuringcup, has been used, as shown in Patent No. 222,780. I am also aware that a bottle-stopper having a flange with a ring cast therein is old, as shown in Patent No. 209,490; and Iam also aware that a device for securing corks in bottles, consisting of two tapering halves, hinged to each other and provided with a beveled flange, to encircle the upper part or neck of the bottle, is old, as shown in Patent No. 208,193; and I disclaim all such devices.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
