Claims.
My invention relates to picker stick checks for looms.
An important object of the invention is to provide a picker stick check which may be applied to a conventional loom, which is of simplified construction, having parts to produce a yie1ding, wedging action against the picker stick to gradually arrest its movement, and which may be readily adjusted for regulating the degree of yielding wedging action.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout same,
Figure 1 is a front side elevation of the picker stick check showing the same applied to the lay of a loom,
Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 of Figure l,
Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a front side elevation of the picker stick check removed,
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2, and,
Figure 6 is an enlarged transverse cross section through the picker stick and brake means carried thereby.
In the drawings, where for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral It designates the lay of a loom having the usual longitudinal slot formed therein for receiving a picker stick H having a picker |2. This picker stick is swung longitudinally of the lay in the usual manner.
An inverted L-shaped bracket l3 having horizontal and vertical webs l4 and I5 is provided. The horizontal web has transverse slots NS for receiving bolts tapped into the lower surface of the lay. One bracket I3 is arranged near each end of the lay.
The picker stick check is designated as a whole by the numeral [8 and is formed from a strip of stiff and resilient metal. The check includes an intermediate portion l9 and inwardly facing opposed U-shaped portions 20. Each U-shaped portion includes an outer closed end 20 and forward and rear sides 2| and 22, and these sides are longitudinally inclined with relation to each other and converge toward the closed end of the U-shaped portion 20. Each side 2| is formed integral with the intermediate portion l9 and this 2 intermediate portion is offset forwardly slightly at 23, whereby the side 2| is arranged slightly in advance of the intermediate portion iii. The sides 2| and 22 of each U-shaped portion having openings 24 formed therein receiving a bolt 25 having an adjustable nut 26. By adjusting the nut 26, the sides 2| and 22 may be brought closer together or may be allowed to spring to positions a greater distance apart. Each U-shaped portion and its sides 2| and 22 are resilient.
The ends of the rear sides 22 adjacent the intermediate portion l9 are freely disposed, as shown.
Each U-shaped portion has its side 2|, Figure 4, provided with a horizontal longitudinal slit 2'! and a vertical slit 28. The horizontal slit 2? extends from the offset portion 23 to the slit 28. These slits form a leaf spring 29, the inner end This leaf spring is formed or tensioned so that of which is integral with the oifset portion 23. it extends rearwardly slightly of the side 2|. The leaf spring 29 has a free inclined end 29'.
One check It is mounted beneath the lay it, near the end thereof and the intermediate portion l9 en'gages the vertical web l5 and is secured thereto by bolts 30.
The picker stick H is provided upon its opposite faces with friction pads or brakes 3|. These friction pads or brakes have horizontally inclined faces 32. These friction pads or brakes are secured to the picker stick by screws 33 or the like, having their heads countersunk in the friction pads or brakes so that they will not contact with the arms of the check.
In operation, when the picker stick is moved to the right toward the outer position, the faces 32 to the right of the friction pads or brakes will slidably contact with the sides 2| and 22 and the leaf spring 29. Since the sides and leaf spring are resilient and longitudinally inclined, they will produce a yielding frictional engagement with the friction pads or brakes 3|, producing a yielding braking action so that the picker stick will be brought to rest at the end of its travel. The inclined end 29 has a greater frictional engagement with the friction pad or brake 3|. This will cause the picker stick to dwell just before the shuttle comes in contact with the picker stick. When the picker stick is thrown to the left toward the inner position, the left faces 32 of the check pads or brakes 3| engage with the sides 2| and 22 of the check and the yielding brake action is applied to the picker stick which is brought torest at the end of its stroke.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A picker stick check comprising a resilient strip including an intermediate portion and U- shaped members carried by theintermediate portion and arranged in opposed relation, each U- shaped member including a closed end and sides, one side having a free end, said sides being longitudinally inclined and converging toward the closed end, one side being slit to form a leaf spring extending longitudinall'yofsucli side and arranged rearwardly ofsuchside prior toengagement by the picker stick, a picker stick 'within the check, and brake means carried byithe picker stick to engage the sides and leaf springs of the U -shaped.-memb-ers.
