The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in flush tanks for toilets and more particularly to a disinfectant attachment for supplying disinfectant to the toilet bowl each time the bowl is flushed.
An important object of the invention is to provide a disinfectant supply tank in the flush tank of the toilet and connecting'a pump to the disinfectant tank operated by the handle of the flush tank to force a regulated volume of disinfectant into the flush tank for discharge with the water into the toilet bowl.
Another object of the invention is to provide a disinfectant attachment of this character which is mounted within the flush tank and provided with a filler neck on the outside of the flush tank to replenish the supply of disinfectant without removing the top of the flush tank.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a flush tank showing the disinfecting attachment in position therein;
Figure 2 is a top plan view with the top of the flush tank removed;
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the disinfecting tank and pump showing the plunger thereof in its intake position.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a flush tank of a type used with a toilet bowl and including an outlet pipe 6 in its bottom closed by a valve 1 and raised into its open position by a pivoted arm 8 operated by a handle 9 on the outside of the tank. The flush tank also includes the usual float I to control the supply of water to the tank and is otherwise of a conventional construction.
A disinfectant tank II is placed in the flush tank to rest on the bottom of the latter and is ii i) all) , 2 providedwith a filler pipe I2 at its upper portion and extending outwardly through one side of the flush tank and provided with a filler cap I3 on the outside of the flush tank so that the disinfectant tank I I may be supplied with a suitable disinfectant without removing the top of the flush tank.
A pump cylinder I4 is positioned horizontally in the lower portion of disinfectant tank I I with the ends of the pump cylinder projecting outwardly at opposite sides of the disinfectant tank and closed by caps I5 and I6. A nozzle I1 is connected to cap It in a position adjacent the flush tank outlet pipe 6, the nozzle including an orifice I8.
A plunger I 9 is provided with a leather washer. having a working fit in pump cylinder I4 and a stem 2| projects real-wardly from the plunger with a flange 22 at its rear end and behind which is positioned a coil spring 23 bearing against rear cap I5 of the pump cylinder to force the plunger forwardly in its pressure stroke.
Inlet ports 24 are formed in the pump cylinder I4 at a point behind plunger I3 when the latter is in its forward position to supply disinfectant from tank I I to the pump cylinder. The top of cylinder I4 is also formed with a longitudinal slot 25 in which the lower vertical end 26 of a bellcrank lever 21 projects and which is formed at its lower end with a yoke 28 straddling the stem 2| and positioned in front of flange 22. Bellcrank lever 21 is pivoted to a bracket 29 on top of cylinder l4 and with the horizontal end 30 of the lever positioned longitudinally above the cylinder and. connected to arm 3 by a rod. 3| which extends upwardly through an opening 32 in the top of disinfectant tank II.
A check valve 33 is held against a valve seat 34 in nozzle I I by a coil spring 35 to prevent water entering the cylinder I4 from the flush tank.
In the operation of the device, flushing handle 9 is used to lift valve 1 from its seat to flush the toilet in the usual manner and as arm 8 is raised by the handle, rod 3| is also raised to actuate bellcrank lever 27 in a direction to move plunger I9 in its suction or inlet stroke, into the position shown in Figure 5. Disinfectant solution in tank I I will then enter pump chamber 36 at the front end of cylinder I4 through the openings 24, while check valve 33 excludes the entrance of water, and when handle 9 is released spring 23 will move plunger I9 forwardly in its pressure or discharge stroke to open check valve 33 and discharge the. disinfectant into the flush tank to pass into the toilet bowl through outlet pipe 6.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the-inventionasherein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination, a flush tank including ,a manually operated flushing mechanism, a'liquid dispensing tank in the flush tank,,a:horizontal pump cylinder in-the bottom of the dispensing tank and having oneend projectingoutwardly of the latter, said cylinder having an inletcinterna-lly of the dispensing tank andan outlet:- externally of the-dispensing tank and internally of the flush tank, -a-pumpplunger working in the cylinder, a bellcranklever pivotally supported on the cylinder and having one end projecting laterallyintothe cylinder in operative engagement with the plunger and having itsother end positioned outwardly of the cylinder and-longitudinally with respect thereto, a pulli rod connectingrthe said last named end of the" lever to. the flushing mechanism to actuate the plunger in its intake stroke, and spring means operating the plunger in its pressure stroke.
2. In combination, a flush tank including a manually operated flushing mechanism, a liquid dispensing tank in the flush tank, a horizontal pump cylinder in the bottom of the dispensing tank and having one end projecting outwardly of the latter, said cylinder having an inlet internally of the dispensing tank and an outlet externally of the dispensing tank and internally ofthe flush tank, a pump plunger working in the cylinder, a bellcrank lever pivoted on the cylinder and having one end projecting laterally into the cylinder and operatively engaging the plunger said lever having its other end positioned outwardly of the cylinder and longitudinally with respect thereto, a pull rod connecting the said last named end of the lever to the flushring mechanism to operate the plunger in its intake stroke, and spring means operating the plunger in its pressure stroke.
