This invention relates to improvements in window constructions of the :sliding sash type.
A` particular object of -thisinvention is-to'provide means'for guiding the sides'of window-sashes which :can be regulated tofadjust frictional contact between the. window frameand the sashes to facilitate sliding of the sashes in the Window frame.
rlhe main-features of-thisinvention -reside in the provision of guide flanges along the guiding surface of the sash side rails which slide in preformed grooves provided in compressible guide strips secured to the sides of the window frame at various points along the length of the guide strips by bolts which may be adjusted to apply varying degrees of compression to the guide strips for displacing the compressible material of lthe guide strips to regulate frictional contact between the side walls of the grooves and the sash guide flanges.
A further feature consists in the provision of a spring balancing of the sashes in conjunction with the frictional guiding of the sashes to facilinate sliding movement of said sashes in the window frame.
Proceeding now to a more detailed description, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a sash and window'frame taken through the sash side rails on one side and the adjacent side frame members of a window frame.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section of the Window shown in Fig. 1, taken through the bottom rails of the sashes and showing portions of the sash side rails and adjacent side frame member on one side of the window frame in elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 and 6 generally designate a pair of sash frames of aluminum or other suitable material, each having opposing side rail members I provided with parallel guide flanges 8 which project from the side rails to slide in preformed parallel grooves 9 provided in an individual moulded guide strip Ii) of rubber or other compressible material for the flanges of each guide rail. The guide strips ID are butted together in sde-by-side relation and extend along the length of a side frame member II on each side of a window frame which may be of wood or metal. The guide strips I0 are separately fastened to each frame member II by bolts I2 which are passed through openings at various points along the length of each guide strip and are screw-threaded into sockets I3 fitted in each of the side frame members of the window frame.

Frictional contact between the guide flanges 8 cf the window sashes 5 and `Ii and the side Walls of the grooves 9 provided in the compressible guide strips I0 may be regulated by screwing the bolts I2 into and out of the sockets I3. When the bolts I2 are screwed into the sockets I3, the heads of the bolts exert pressure on the compressible guide strips I0 and cause the compressible material to be displaced so as to increase the frictional Contact between the sash rail guide anges 8 and the side walls of the grooves 9. In this connection it is pointed out that the portion 20 of the compressible guide strip on either side of the screw is caused to spread in a direction toward the inner adjacent surfaces of sash rail flanges 8. In addition, the inward pressure applied by the bolts I2 causes portions of the compressible material to be displaced into the spaces indicated at I4 and Il. While this displacement is being effected, the flange I8 of guide strip IIJ bears against the surface of trim I9, and, due to the undercutting of the flange, causes the portion 2| of the guide strip between said flange I8 and the adjacent sash rail guide flange 8 to bear against the adjacent surface of said sash rail guide flange 8. Displacement of the material into the space indicated at I4 also causes that portion 22 of the guide strips I0 between their abutting surfaces and the adjacent sash guide flange 8 to bear against the adjacent surface of said sash rail guide flange. When it is desired to reduce the frictional contact between the sash rail guide flanges 8 and the sid-e walls of the grooves 9, this is accomplished by loosening the bolts I2 to relieve some of the compression on the compressible guide strips I9 so as to reduce the frictional contact between the side walls of grooves 9 and the surfaces of the sash rail guide anges 8.
The sashes 5 and are shown to have double glazing panels 24, each glazing panel being embedded in grooves 25 of rubber glazing strips 26 held between a side plate 21 formed integral with the sash frame and a removable side plate 28 which is secured to the opposite side of the sash frame by bolts 29. An insulating strip 3E) of rubber is interposed between the adjacent surfaces of said removable side plate 21 and the frame.
Each window sash is balanced by suitable sash balancing means such as the coil spring type balance 3| shown in Fig. l. The spring is secured at one end to a sash and at its other end to the upper portion of the window frame.
I claim:
1. In a Window construction for sliding window sashes, a window frame including side frame members, a sash guide strip made of resilient compressible non-metallic material and arranged along the length of said side frame members, said guide strip being provided with grooves along its length, a window sash including side rail members positioned between said frame members to oppose the guide strip of said frame members and slidable relative thereto, said side rail members being provided with guide anges sliding in the grooves of said guide strip between and in contact pressure with the opposing side walls and the grooves, and rigid means adjustable for compressing said guide strip to vary the eective 'contact pressure between said rail iianges and the opposing side walls of said grooves.
2. A window construction as set forth in claim 1, in which the window frame engaging side of said guide strip is inwardly offset from one side edge for a substantial portion of its width to provide a space between a substantial portion of the guide strip and the opposing surface oi' the side frame member to permit displacement of a portion of said guide strip when the latter is subjected to compression.
3. A window construction as set forth in claim l, said compressing means including a socket provided in said side frame member and a bolt extending through said guide strip and received in said socket in screw-threaded engagement therewith, said bolt being provided with a anged head adapted to compress said guide strip when the bolt is screwed into said socket.
