The front recess I is deeper than rear recess I4. The longitudinal recesses I4 and I5 have a common longitudinal axis which intersects the center of bore I2. The lateral recesses I6 and II are of the same width and depth and they have a common lateral axis which intersects the center of bore I2. This lateral axis of recesses I5 and I! is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of recesses I4 and I5. The formation of the cutout I8 is optional, and this cut-out is omitted if prong II of the pull-member 8 is omitted.
Said top wall or outer wall 2 is also provided at its top face with intergral raised stops I9 and 20.
The bottom wall I has a transverse hole which extends into a recess 2| of bottom wall I.
The walls I and 2 can be shaped as above described by cutting and bending and stamping or coining suitable blanks. The pull-member 8 can be shaped by stamping or coining a flat blank and the pin P can be shaped by coining or pressing a cylindrical blank.
In order to assemble the parts, the cylindrical lugs I0 are interfitted with the part-cylindrical recesses 5, and the cylindrical shank 6 is inserted through hole I2 of wall 2 and the transversely alined hole of wall I, so that the reduced extension I is located in recess 2|. Said reduced extension 1 is then enlarged by spinning the metal of extension I or in any other manner, to provide a head la in recess 2I. The pull-member 8 is turnable relative to pin P about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to the axis of pin P.
The transverse pin P is thus turnably assembled with walls I and 2, so that pin P can turn easily around its pivot axis relative to walls I and 2. The head 4 is sufficiently close to outer wall 2 in the assembled device, so that the pull-member 8 is maintained assembled with pin P. The pullmember 8 is easily turnable relative to head I, around the common axis of cylindrical lugs I0.
When the pivot axis of pull-member 8 is laterally disposed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the cylindrical lugs ID are partially located in the lateral recesses I6 and I1, and the optional prong II is alined with the optional opening or cut-out I8. One lug It then abuts the stop 20. The lugs III then cooperate with recesses or indentations I6 and II to keep the longitudinal walls I and 2 in the parallel, normal relation shown in Fig. 4. In this relation, the walls are in selected proximate position.
The slide then operates in the usual manner. When the slide is moved longitudinally rearwardly in the locking direction, said slide interlocks the two rows of hookless fasteners. When the slide is moved longitudinally forwardly in the unlocking direction, the shank 6 of pin P disengages the hookless fasteners.
When a jam or obstruction occurs, the pullmember 8 is turned from its horizontal position of Fig. 1 to a vertical position, and said pullmember 8 and the transverse pin P are turned in unison clockwise through an angle of 90 until the respective lug III abuts the stop I9. One lug I0 is then alined with the shallow rear recess I4, and the other lug I0 is then alined with the deep front recess I5. The pivot axis of pull-member 8 is then longitudinally disposed.
The resilient rear yoke 3 then springs the walls I and 2 away from each other from their selected 4 proximate positions of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
When the walls I and 2 are in their release positions or selected transverse positions of Fig. 5, the flanges F and Fa may clear the hookless fasteners. In such case, the slide may be moved longitudinally rearwardly relative to the hookless fasteners, without interlocking the hookless fasteners, while walls I and 2 are in their relative inclined positions of Fig. 5.
However, it is preferred that the flanges of walls I and 2 should not be moved out of engagement with the hookless fasteners when said walls I and 2 are in their relative release positions or selected transverse positions of Fig. 5. In such case, the flanges Fa will still interlock the hookless fasteners when the slide is moved longitudinally rearwardly in the locking direction.
However, when the walls I and 2 are in said release positions, the slide can be moved forwardly in the longitudinal unlocking direction. The walls I and 2 are sufliciently spaced apart so that the shank 6 of pin P can then disengage the hookless fasteners, even if there is a jam or obstruction forwardly of shank 6.
A great economy in manufacture and assembly is thus produced, because the lugs III operate as cam members, in addition to providing a turnable connection between pin P and pull-member 8. The lugs III may be alined with recesses I6 and II in final assembled position while the extension 'I is enlarged to form head Ia, so that these small parts are very accurately assembled.
If the prong II and cut-out I8 are used, and
v the pull-member 8 is moved to its horizontal position of Fig. 1, said prong II is passed through cut-out I8 to engage a hookless fastener or the fabric between adjacent hookless fasteners or any part of the fabric of the garment or other article, to hold the slide against longitudinal movement.
In order to limit the movement of walls I and 2 towards each other when the pull-member 8 is disposed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the slide is provided with longitudinal tongues 22 at each longitudinal edge thereof. Said tongues 22 are integral with yoke 3 and said tongues 22 are located longitudinally between walls I and 2, adjacent the longitudinal edges of said walls.
The pull-member 8 operates as a control-member and it need not necessarily be a pull-member.
While I have disclosed cylindrical lugs I0 and entrant parts I6 and I! as cam means for holding the walls I and 2 in their normal operating positions of Figs. 1 and 4, the invention is not limited to this type of cam means.
In general, the invention includes a device wherein a control member is connected to a turnable transverse pin, said connection between said control member and said pin being turnable or non-turnable, and said control member has a control parts or parts which cooperate with a selected first part of the adjacent slide-walls to hold the slide-walls in normal operating position in a first selected position of said turnable pin, and said control part or parts and a second selected part of said slide-wall are shaped to permit the slide-walls to move away from each other and out of said normal operating positions in a second selected position of said turnable pin. The control part or parts are located between the head of the control pin and the respective adjacent slide-wall. Since the control member is held in the first selected position, abutting the first selected part of the slide-wall, when the connection between the. pin; and the inner slide.- wail is. completed, this provides: a. gauge. forac!- curately makin such completed connection. spinning the extension to? form inner head To.
It is desirable to form the enlargements m by spinning, in order to. eliminate excessive pres-- sure upon assembled pin P and the; control member 8, in the direction of the transversely disposed axis of the pin P.
It is'preferred' tohave the-part-cylindrical lugs 10 p y Located in the-recess s titan-d II, when the final assembly is made by forming the enlargementv 1a. However, the. invention is not limited to this feature because the lugs to may abut an p r en. or outer face of the uter w ll 2, n su h final assem ly ismade. When the final assembly is made, the lugs l0 which then abut the top or outer face of the top wall 2, act as a gauge in regulating the formation of the enlargement la in the recess 2|.
I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention but numerous changes and omissions and substitutions and additions can be made without departing from the scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. A slide having Y-shaped channels for engaging and disengaging longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls, said walls having front and rear ends, said rear ends being integral with a resilient rear transverse yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, holding means comprising a pin which is turnably connected to the bottom wall of said slide and which extends through an opening in the top wall of said slide and which is turnable about the axis of said pin relative to said walls, said holding means being operative to force said longitudinal walls towards each other from said selected separated positions to selected proximate positions and to release said walls to permit them to move to said selected transverse positions, said walls being closer to each other in said selected proximate positions than in said selected separated positions, said holding means being located and operative to separate said hookless fasteners when said slide is moved longitudinally forwardly, and a turnable member which is turnably connected to said pin to turn relative to said pin about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to the axis of said pin, said turnable member having cam means which abut the top face of said top wall when said pivot axis is laterally disposed to hold said walls in said selected proximate positions, said cam means being shaped to permit said walls to move to said selected separated positions when said pivot axis is longitudinally disposed.
2. A slide for hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal top and bottom walls whose rear ends are connected by a rear transverse resilient yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, a transverse pin which is turnably connected to said bottom wall and which extends transversely through a hole in said top wall, said pin being turnable about a transverse axis, said pin having a head which is located above said top wall, said head having a bottom face which is provided with diametrical recesses, a turnable member which has lugs which are located partially in said recesses, said turnable member being turnable relative to said pin about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to said pin, the top face of said top wall having lateral recesses on opposite sides of said; hole and having longitudinal on opposite sides of said hole, said lugs beingshaped to. partially enter said recesses, said lugs and lateral recesses: being shaped to hold said walls: in selected proximate positions'whensaid-lugs are located. in said lateralrecesses, said: lugs. and said longitudinal recesses being shaped to permit said" yoketo move said walls tos aid se1'ected transverse positions when said lugs are in saidlong i tudinalx recesses; said: walls being transversel'gi closer" to each other in said selecteclproximate? positions than. in said selected transverse posi tionsi 3. it slide: for longitudinally disposed hookless-.
, fasteners, saidslide. having longitudinal-'- bottomand top walls, said walls being separated at their front. ends. and being cormected: attheir rear ends to a transverse resilient yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, said walls having transverse flanges which are rearwardly divergent, a transverse pin which is located forwardly of said yoke and rearwardly of the front ends of said flanges, said pin being turnable relative to said longitudinal walls about a pin axis which is transverse relative to said longitudinal walls, said pin having a bearing in said bottom wall and extending transversely through a hole in said top wall beyond said top wall and being immovable relative to said bottom wall in a transverse direction, a control member which is turnably connected to said pin above said bottom wall, said control member being turnably connected by connecting means to said pin to turn relative to said pin about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to said pin axis, said control member being turnable in unison with said pin about said pin axis to a holding position in which said pivot axis is laterally disposed and to a release position in which said pivot axis is longitudinally disposed, said control member having a wall-opcrating member which is shaped and located to abut the top face of said top wall, said walloperating member and top face being shaped to abut each other and to hold said longitudinal walls in selected proximate positions when said pivot axis is laterally disposed, said longitudinal walls being closer to each other in said selected proximate positions than in said selected separated positions, said wall-operating member being shaped to permit said rear yoke to move said walls to said separated positions when said pivot axis is longitudinally disposed.
4. A slide for longitudinally disposed hookless fasteners, said slide having longitudinal bottom and top walls, said walls being separated at their front ends and being connected at their rear ends to a transverse resilient yoke which biases said walls transversely away from each other to selected separated positions, said walls having transverse flanges which are rearwardly divergent, a transverse pin which is located forwardly of said yoke and rearwardly of the 'front ends of said flanges, said pin being turnable relative to said longitudinal walls about a pin axis which is transverse relative to said longitudinal walls, said pin having a bearing in said bottom wall and extending transversely through a hole in said top wall beyond said top wall and being immovable relative to said bottom wall in a transverse direction, a control member which is turnably connected to said pin above said bottom wall, said control member being turnably connected by connecting means to said pin to turn relative to said pin about a pivot axis which is perpendicular to said pin axis, said control member being tumable in unison with said pin about said pin axis to a holding position in which said pivot axis is laterally disposed and to a release position in which said pivot axis is longitudinally disposed, said control member having a wall-operating member which is shaped and located to abut the top face of said top wall, said wall-operating member and top face being shaped to abut each other and to hold said longitudinal walls in selected proximate positions when said pivot axis is laterally disposed, said longitudinal walls being closer to each other in said selected proximate positions than in said selected separated positions, said wall-operating member being shaped to permit said rear yoke to move said walls to said separated positions when said pivot axis is longi- References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Number Name Date 948,287 Trulove .Feb. 1, 1910 1,598,183 Whitney Aug. 31, 1926 1,662,367 Draher et a1.
