RECEPTACLE COVER Feb. 2, 1954 Filed May 16, 1950 FIGURE l.
FIGURE 2 FIGURE 5 m. T NX A B m. J s N E M E L c 6 2 FIGURE 8.
Patented Feb. 2, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 10 Claims. 1
This invention relates to receptacle covers and more particularly to an improved engageable and releasable type for quick access to the receptacle.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved cover with engageable clamping hooks to be clamped on a receptacle flange by having a single manual control Within a dust tight chamber whereby the cover may be quickly engaged or disengaged.
Another object .of the present invention is to provide a cover having a top plate, bottom plate and connecting sides forming a dust protective enclosure chamber for the reception of the controls connected to the clamping hooks, the hooks projecting through the sides of the cover and engaging the flange of a receptacle. The receptacle may be a conveyor trough or any type of mixing bin as commonly employed by the milling industry.
With these objects in view the invention is better understood by the illustrated views of the accompanying drawings, the following description and more fully pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a fragment of the improved cover with the hinged type hook.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the improved hinged type hook with broken portions of the cover and a receptacle flange being shown.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the cover removed from a receptacle illustrating the sides and bottom thereof.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of one end of the cover with portions broken away to illustrate one end of the latch bar with the respective anchor therefor.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the improved cover clamped on a portion of a screw conveyor trough.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a portion of a screw conveyor illustrating a bolted cover and a ledge attached thereto for the improved latch bar.
Figure 7 is a bottom view of the cover with the bottom member thereof removed to illustrate the sliding latch members and clamp hooks in latched position. The unlatched positions are illustrated by dotted lines.
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary view illustrating the sliding members having a hook on the end thereof in an unlatched position for engaging a receptacle flange.
The receptacle cover may be constructed of any of the well known materials and as illustrated comprises a top rectangular plate member 9, side enclosure members I0, end enclosure members I I, and bottom dust protective plate l2. Plate member I2 is rectangular and attached to end enclosure members I I by screws I3 engaging holes l4.
The side enclosure members l0 are set back from the bottom edge of the top member 9 to provide room for flange gaskets I5 contacting the receptacle flanges I6. The end enclosure members l l are set back from the bottom edges of the top member 9 to provide for recessed gaskets 11. The recessed gaskets fit on the top of the latch anchor bars I8 secured to bolted cover plate l9 .or bolted cross bar 29. The end enclosure members II are tapered at 2I- and are set back sufficiently to have the outer edges thereof register with the inner edges of the recessed gaskets H.
The top member 9 is provided on the bottom thereof with a series of Spaced parallel lateral slots or recesses 22 extending from the inner portion of the member 9 to the outer edges thereof. A lateral latch slide bar 23 as illustrated in Figure 8 is provided in each recess 22 and attached to the member 9 by countersunk head'screws 24 through the elongated slots 25 in the bars 23. The outer end of each lateral latch slide bar 23 projects beyond the respective recess 22 and member 9 forming a hook by having the ends 21 bent downward into a reverse curve at 26 and the end 21 thereof tapering in a diverging direction from the main portion of the bar 23 forming a clamp hook. The inner ends of the lateral latch slide bars 23 have offset bends 28 therein and extend to the lower surface of the top rectangular plate member 9 where they are integrally joined in pairs by longitudinal guide bars 29.
A longitudinal latch bar 30 is located below the top rectangular plate member 9 and extends through the longitudinal center thereof, through the ends II, and projects therebeyond at SI and 32 to latch beneath the latch anchor bars I8, the bar 39 is provided with longitudinal slots 33 and keeper bolts 34 for slidable engagement therewith.
A manually operated lever 38 is pivoted on the pin 39 recessed in the top member 9 and held in bearing members 40 secured in recessed top rectangular plate member 9.
7 The lower end portion of the lever 38 is slotted 3 to receive pin 4| secured to ears 42 mounted on longitudinal latch bar 30. The pins 39 and ll are preferably mounted near the center of the top plate member 9 and the lever 38 is pressed into the slot 43 of the top member 9 when the lateral latch bars 23 with hook ends 21 are moved toward the longitudinal center of the cover in a latched position. A keeper plate 44 is pivoted at 45 and holds the latch bar 38 in the cover when the cover is latched and clamped on the receptacle flanges.
A different form of hook 46 is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 and is hinged at 41 on slide bar 48, the lateral slide bar 48 moves in recess 49 and is connected to the hook 4'! and provided with a spring 50 to normally raise the hook in an upward position. The hook 46 when in a raised position butts against plate 5| held to cover top member 52 by screw 53, the lower end 54 of the plate 5|, is positioned to pull the hook downward into a latching position around the receptacle flange [5 when the slide bar 48 is moved toward the longitudinal center of the cover plate 52, side members 55 are similar to side members [0 and receive a bottom dust protective plate 5 6 which is similar to bottom dust protective plate l2. The plate 5| is recessed in the 'top member 523% 51 and a slot 58 extends from the recess 51 to the outer edge of the top member 52 for .the hook .46 to move therein. The spring 5i] has projected ends 59 anchored onthe slide bar 48 and the center portion 60 of the spring is anchored on the back of the hook at 6 I.
In the operation the longitudinal slide latch bar in the open position has end 32'moved to a flush position with the end member H at the inner edge of the gasket l1 and the opposite end 3| slides outward to the outer edge of the respective gasket H. The longitudinal latch bar 30 moves on keeper bolts .34 by means of the longitudinal slots 33 and .the toggle members push outward in a lateral manner to the slide bars 23 the lateral slide bars 23 moving in recesses 22, .on screws 24 by means of slots 25 move the hooks with the reversed bends 2B and ends 21, outward to a released position .asillustra-ted in Figure 8. The end of the cover containing the longitudinal latch bar end .32 is raised upward first and the cover is removed by withdrawing latch .bar end 3! from the latch anchor bar 18. To apply the cover to the receptacle flange the movements are reversed and the hooks are drawn and wedged against the edges of the flanges I 5 and tightened against the gaskets I5. I
When the area around the receptacle crowded or conjested with other pieces of equipment it is often necessary to use the hinged hook as illustrated in Figure 2 it being obvious that the other members work the same as heretofore described except that the hook swings upward on the hinge to butt against the plate 5| within the recess 57 by means of the spring 50.
