1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to orthopedic tables, the primary object of the invention being to provide a table of this character which will facilitate the refracture of limbs and arms, as well as the application of casts on broken limbs and arms.
An important object of the invention is to provide a table of this character having means for supporting and holding the leg or arm under treatment, in an elevated position by the use of the usual gauze bandage strip, or by the use of light weight canvas which may be wrapped into the wrapping used by the doctor in forming the cast, thereby eliminating the necessity of lifting or moving the injured leg or arm to form the cast.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a table which may be readily moved to a position adjacent to an operating table for the application of a cast, While the patient is lying on the operating table.
Another important object of the invention is to support the limb or arm being fitted with a cast, in an elevated position, while the gauze or light weight canvas used in forming the cast, is being wrapped.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure l is a side elevational view of an orthopedic table, constructed in accordance with the invention.
' Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View through the table.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the table.
Fig. 4 is a front end elevational view of the table.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the operating means for the gauze roll supporting shaft of the table.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the table embodies side members 5 which are formed preferably of tubular material bent to provide substantially inverted U-shaped members. These side members 5 are connected by the transverse end members 6 that are connected with the legs 1 forming a part of the side members 5.
These end members 6 are bowed upwardly, as clearly shown by Fig. 5 of the drawings, to lend strength to the frame of the table.
Connecting the end members 6 at points intermediate the ends of the end members, is the tubular member 8 that is disposed longitudinally of the frame of the table.
Transverse bars 9 connect the side members 5 of the frame at the upper ends of the side members 5, and these transverse bars 9 are bowed downwardly, as shown by Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Curved brace tubes iii are provided at opposite sides of the frame and have their lower ends connected with tubular members 8, while the upper ends of the curved brace tubes IIJ connect with the side members 5, where they are welded to the side members 5.
Secured to the lower ends of the legs l are the rubber feet II that provide a support for the table to hold the table in an upright position, against slipping.
Mounted in bearings Ii and i2, which are secured to the legs 7 at the front end of the table, is the shaft which is formed with the squared end i l over which the tubular shaft [5 moves, the shaft I5 carrying the crank handle I6 at its outer end.
The inner end of the tubular shaft I 5 is formed with the annular flange H which is spaced an appreciable distance from the bearing l2, through which the tubular shaft extends, there being provided the coiled spring i8 disposed on the tubular shaft l5 and mounted between the annular flange I! and. bearing 2. The action of the spring i8 is to normally bias the tubular shaft inwardly, along the shaft l3. Secured to the leg 7 of the table, through which the tubular shaft i5 extends, is the retaining disc l9 which is provided with a circular line of openings into which the pin 2| extends, the pin 2| extending from the crank handle it. Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the crank handle may be readily rotated to rotate the shaft l3.
The shaft it provides a support for the spool 22 on which the gauze 23 is mounted, the gauze passing upwardly over the transverse bar 9 at the front end of the table, from where it extends horizontally along the top of the table. The end of the gauze is connected to the tubular member 24 which has its ends secured to the substantially short tubes 25 that in turn are secured at the foot end of the table. The gauze is secured to the tubular member 24 by wrapping the same partially around said tubular memher, where the end of the gauze is secured in any understood that light weight canvas, such as commonly used in forming casts, may be used without departin from the spirit of the invention.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, after the gauze or cloth material has been secured to the tubular member 24, the crank' handle it may be operated to stretch the gauze or cloth material providing a support for the limb or arm being treated.
The reference character 26 indicates the foot rest which extends vertically from one'end of' the table, as clearly shown by Fig. 1 of the drawmgs.
The foot rest is clamped to the transverse end member 9 disposed at the foot end of the table, by means of the clamp 27, the foot rest being provided with straps 2 for strapping the foot of the injured leg to the table. 1
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a table specially designed for refracture and placing casts on broken limbs and arms, the table having a gauze or cloth supporting surface which will be wrapped into the gauze wrapping forming the cast, eliminating the necessity of lifting the limb which is being supplied with the cast, after it has been set, in order to make the necessary gauze wrappings which form a part of the cast.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
An orthopedic table comprising a frame embodying transverse downwardly bowed bars at theendsxof said frame, .said frame having an open top, a roll of fabricmaterial mounted at one end of the frame below said open top, said fabric material being stretched over said open top'ofthe table and curved transversely over said downwardly bowed bars, providing a transversely curvedsupport for a limb being supplied with a cast, a foot rest rising from one end of the frame to'which the'foot of the limb under treatment is-firm1y secured, means for normally holding said roll against unwinding maintaining the fabric material in stretchedrcondition, said .fabric material adapted to beincorporated in thecast with the Wrapping of the cast.
