The base or stand 10, as best illusj trated in Fig. 6, comprises an outer rim portion 14 of cylindrical form which may be made from a strip of sheet metal, the diameter of the base being somewhat greater than the, diameter of the container or can 13 which is to be placed thereon. The height of the base may be varied as desired or required but preferably is about four inches high. A rectangular frame structure is fixed horizontally within the rim portion [4 and this comprises the brace beams l5, which add for the can. The design or construction of the supporting frame may be varied as desired and is not an important feature of this invention.
Fixed upon this supporting frame at its corners and adjacent the rim [4 are blocks l5 which serve to center and retain the garbage can against lateral movement when resting on the stand.
Fixed to the base structure at one side is a vertical standard 18, preferably of channel iron, as best shown in Fig. 1. The standard is welded or otherwise rigidly fixed at its lower end to the outside face of the rim [4, with the channel facing outward, and the length of the standard is such that it terminates at about% the height of the can or container. Extending vertically within the channel member I8 is a tubular shaft 19 which passes slidably and rotatably through cross webs or brackets 20 that are fixed in the standard at its upper end and at spaced intervals 'therealong. At its upper end the shaft contains a rod 22 that is rotatably and longitudinally movable therein and which serves as an extension for the shaft. To the upper end of this rod there is fixed a bracket 23 by which a bar 24 is rigidly supported to extend horizontally and diametrically across the top of the can l3.

shown in Fig. 1, but may be swung upwardly to open position as indicated in dotted lines therein. The means for swinging the cover sections to open position will now be described. First, it is to be explained that the cover sections I2A and 12B are supported from the bar 24 by means of hinged rods 25 to which the cover sections are fixed, and which are rotatably mounted in bearings 26 that are fixed to the bar. These hinged rods have end portions 21 of crank-likeform extending from their inner ends to opposite sides of the upper end portion of the rod 22. Fixed to the upper end of the tubular shaft i9 is a cross-arm 30, and pivotally connecting the outer ends of this cross-arm with the crank portions 21 of the hinge rods are links 3|. The connection above described provides that upon raising the shaft 1 9 the hinge rods will be actuated to swing the cover sections from closed to open position, as has been illustrated in Fig. 1 in the dotted lines shown.
Normally the cover secrigidity to the base and also serve as supports A foot lever 31 is disposed along the exterior of the metal rim I4 at the front of thestand as seen in Figs. 6 and 7, and is securely fixed at one end to a cross shaft 38 that extends horizontally and diametrically through the stand and to the exterior at the side opposite the foot lever. A lever arm 39 is securely fixed to the extended end of the cross-shaft at a right angle thereto and this lies along the curved periphery of the base and at its end is pivotally joined to the cover-lifting mechanism.
Fixed within the lower end portion of the tubular shaft 59, as a downward extension thereof, is a fiat bar 30. This bar extends through a cross slot l-l that is formed in the lower cross web or bracket 20 that is applied to the standard.
Between its point of connection with the shaft I9 and its lower end, the bar is given a quarter-turn twist as at 42. At its lower end the bar is connected as at 53 with a swivel link 44, which in turn is pivotally connected at its lower end with the swinging or outer end of the lever arm 39. Thus when the foot pedal is partially depressed, the connections previously described cause the bar 59 to be lifted and, through the bar, to lift the shaft l9 to cause the opening action of the cover members MA and H33. If it should be desired to swing the cover from the upper end of the can to a position laterally. thereof, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7, then the foot lever is fully depressed. This causes the upper end of the tubular shaft it!) to move up along the rod 2| and to engage the mounting bracket 23 of the cross-rod 2%, thus to lift the rod and the cover assembly upwardly in the clear of the can. Then the quarter-turn twist M of the bar as will be caused to pass into the cross slot of the web 20 and eifect a rotative action of the shaft l9 which rotates the bracket'23 and bar 24 accordingly, causing the cover unit to be swung laterally from the can.
A coiled spring 59 is attached under tension to the upper end web of the standard [8 and to the outer end of the bracket 23 to keep the bracket down against the top end of the cover when the parts are in normal position. This spring also operates, upon release of pressure from the foot pedal, to supplement the weightof the parts in effecting an automatic return of the cover sections to normal position closed over the end of the can.
As a desirable detail of construction, I provide the mounting bracket 23 for the bar 24 that is attached to the upper end of shaft IS with a rigid, downwardly depending leg Gil, shown best in Fig. 2. The lower end portion of this leg normally is contained in a slot 6| that is formed between two spaced legs 62-62 that extend inwardly from the cross-head 3i] fixed on the upper end of shaft 19. Also, this leg is slidably contained in a similar slot 63 in a bracket 64 that isv fixed to the upper end of standard it. This arrangement of the leg 60 holds the bar 2d against lateral turning relative to the shaft 99 and keepsthe lids in proper relationship to the can when opened and closed. However, when the shaft 19' is lifted by the complete depression of the foot pedal, the leg 6% will be disengaged from the bracket 64 and then the cover unit can be swung laterally.
As another feature of construction, the two sections of the cover are equipped on their under sides with sealing strips of rubber It or other suitable material adapted to effect a sealed connection with the top rim of the can when the 3 lid is closed. Also, it is desirable to equip the under side of the lid sections, as seen in Fig. 3, with pockets or containers as at H, for a deodorant of any suitable kind.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A receptacle mounting and cover comprising a base on which a receptacle may be disposed, a standard fixed to the base to extend to the top of the receptacle, when disposed on the base, and a horizontal arm fixed to the standard at its upper end adapted to extend across the top of the receptacle, cover sections for the receptacle longitudinally hinged to the arm, a foot treadle pivoted on the base and an operating mechanism connecting the foot treadle and the hinged cover sections for the raising thereof incident to the movement of the foot treadle.
2. A receptacle mounting and cover comprising a base on which a receptacle may be disposed, a standard fixed to the base adapted to extend to the top of the receptacle when disposed on the said base, an arm mounted by the standard for radial swinging and adapted to extend when at rest across the top of the receptacle, cover sections for the receptacle hinged to the arm, a foot treadle pivoted on the base and an operating linkage connecting the foot treadle and hinged cover sections whereby the initial travel of the treadle on being depressed effects the simultaneous raising of the cover sections; said linkage including a longitudinally movable link, rotatably connected with the arm and formed with a spiral twist, and there being a guide fixed to the standard and adapted to engage with said spiral twist by movement of the link that is caused by the final depressing movement of the treadle. to rotate the link to swing the arm and cover sections laterally from the receptacle.v
3. A receptacle mounting and cover as recited in claim 2 wherein spring means is provided for returning the linkage, arm and cover sections to starting position when pressure on the foot treadle is removed.

A closure for garbage can types of receptacles comprising a base on which the receptacle may be mounted, a standard fixed to the base to extend to the top of the receptacle when disposed on the base, an arm supported by the standard to swing from a position of rest extending across the top of the receptacle to a position laterally thereof, a pair of cover sections hinged to the arm to cover the receptacle when the arm is in a position of rest, and an operating mechanism comprising a foot treadle pivotally supported on the base, an actuating lever arm for each cover member, a link providing an operating connection between the foot treadle and said lever arms for the hinged actuation of the cover sections to open position by that longitudinal movement of the link that is incident to the initial depressing movement of the treadle, and means operable by the link incident to a farther depressing movement of the treadle to cause the arm to swing radially to carry the opened cover sections horizontally from over the receptacle, and spring means for returning the parts to starting position when operating pressure is removed for the treadle.
5. A receptacle mounting and cover comprising a base on which a receptacle may be dis posed, a standard fixed to the base, a shaft rotatably mounted in the standard for longitudinal shifting therein and adapted to extend vertically above the top level of a receptacle when it is disposed on the base, an arm fixed to the standard, cover sections for a receptacle hinged to the arm, a foot treadle pivoted on the base and secured to the shaft and a cover operating mechanism connecting the cover sections and shaft and whereby upon an initial depressing movement of the treadle the cover sections will be raised, and by a farther depressing movement the shaft will be rotated to carry the arm and cover sections laterally from above a receptacle.
6. A device as in claim 5 wherein the said shaft has a flattened longitudinal portion formed in a spiral twist, and said standard has a guide for the shaft fixed therein and formed with a slot to receive the spirally twisted portion of the shaft to effect the rotative action of the shaft.
