My invention relates in general to fence structures consisting of line wires supported by metal posts, and more particularly to improved wire clips for firmly attaching the line wires to the posts.

The object of the invention is to provide a fence post clip for U-section posts, which clip is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture, which will hold the line wire very reliably and tightly, and which while it may be applied with little effort manually and without tools cannot be easily removed.

In the attached sheet of drawings:

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a U-section post upon which a pair of line wires have been attached by two of my clips;

Fig. 2 is a top plan detail view showing one of the clips detached from the post;

Fig. 3 is a front detail view of the clip; and

Fig. 4 is a side detail view of the clip.

Referring to Fig. l, the reference numeral I designates a steel fence post, having a U-shaped central web portion 2 and outwardly extending side flanges 3, and with transverse central holes 4 spaced apart vertically in accordance with the desired spacing of the fence line wires 5 as secured by the stiff wire clips 6. Each such clip 6 comprises an intermediate substantially straight shank portion 1 having at one end a wire-retaining saddle or fillet portion 8 and a rearwardly offset finger end portion 9, and at the other end a U-shaped hook end portion it).

These clips may be formed very rapidly and cheaply in an ordinary machine operation by means of dies adapted to bend the upper end of a straight length of stiff wire downwardly and outwardly to shape the fillet 8 and offset finger 9, while simultaneously bending the other end of said wire length in opposite direction and upwardly to form the U-shaped hook portion 10.

In use, the finger portion 9 of the clip is pushed by hand through a web hole 4, the shank portion 1 is rotated downwardly over the adjacent line wire 5 and backwardly, and the U-shaped hook portion I is snapped around the rearward face of the post flange 3. The end of the offset finger portion 9 then bears centrally against the concave rear face of the post web 2, the fillet portion 8 presses the line wire firmly against the post, and the L l-shaped hook portion I 0 fits diagonally over the flanges 3 and upwardly into the concave rear face of the web post portion 2 and locks the clip in place thereon. To remove the clip the above-described sequence of steps is merely reversed.

Although I have hereinabove shown and described my invention in considerable detail, I do not wish to be limited to the exact and specific details of the construction so shown and described, but I may also use such substitutions, modifications or equivalents thereof as are embraced within the scope and spirit of the invention, or pointed out in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A resilient clip for attaching line wires to a U-section fence post having vertically spaced central holes, comprising an elongated shank portion, an angularly bent portion adapted to be inserted through a hole and press tightly against the rear face of the post, a line wire retaining portion intermediate the shank and offset portions, and a terminal hook portion adapted to engage one side of the post.

2. A metal clip for attaching a line wire to the front face of U-section fence post having a pair of rearwardly disposed side flanges and a plurality of vertically spaced perforations, comprising a substantially straight resilient shank portion, a finger portion at one end of the clip bent rearwardly with relation to the post and out of the extended line of the shank portion and projecting through a perforation and bearing against the rear face of the web of the post, a saddle portion intermediate the shank and finger portions securing the line wire against the front face of the post, and at the other end of the clip a U-shaped hook portion adapted to fit over and engage one side flange of the post.

3. In combination with a channel shaped fence post having a web and flanges and an aperture in said web, a resilient wire clip having a saddle portion overlying a fence wire located on the outer face of said web adjacent said opening, a portion extending through said opening and engaging the inner face of said web, a shank portion extending laterally and rearwardly along the outer face of said web and one of said flanges, and a hook portion engaging said flange.

4. A resilient clip for fastening a line wire to a channel shaped post having an aperture therein, comprising a portion overlying a line wire disposed against the outer face of said channel adjacent said aperture, an offset finger projecting through said opening and engaging the inner face of said channel, a shank extending across the outer face of said channel and projecting rearwardly, and a hook at the end of said shank engaging a flange of the channel.

5. A preformed clip for attaching a line wire to the front face of a flanged channel post having minal spring finger portion projecting through a the hole and having its end bent forwardly and upwardly in relation to the post and out of the extended line of the shank portion.
