4 Claims. (Cl. 248-147) 1 This invention relates to supporting stands for rubbish and garbage cans.

While stands for this purpose have been provided in the past they have been generally found undesirable for a number of reasons, such as that they were required to be made of a plurality of separate parts welded or otherwise secured together. In addition to being uneconomical to manufacture, such devices were easily damaged. The prior art devices, in generahhave been so constructed that removal and replacement of arbage cans has been rather difficult.

It is one object of the present invention to provide an improved garbage can supporter which may be economically manufacturedwith a minimum of parts. a

Another object of the invention is to provide a garbage can support of the character described having improved means for shiftably mounting the usual closure member or lid in association with the top of the can, in a manner which does not interfere with said removal or replacement of the can with respect to the support.

A further object of theinvention is to provide a garbage can support which may be compactly stacked innesting relation with a plurality of like supports or nested for shipping or storage purposes. I

A further object of this invention is to provide a garbage can support, wherein the containers 4 are easily removed and replaced with a minimum of lifting.

The foregoing and other objects of the invention will be manifest fromthe following brief description and the accompanying drawings.

Of the drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating improved garbage can supporting device in accordance with the invention, with typical garbage can supported therein.

Figure 2 is a perspective view, similar to Figure 1, but with the garbage can and-closure member removed.

Figure 3 is a side elevation of the supporting device with a garbage can supported therein, the device being shown anchoredin the ground as in use.

Figure 4 is a side elevation illustrating the manner of nesting a number of said supporting devices, as for shipping or storage purposes.

Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the supporting device of Figures 1, .2 and 3, but in a flat condition, in which it may be initiallyformed' prior to bending as best shown in Figure 2;

Referring particularly to Figures land .2, there is shown a garbage can I0 of known type mounted on a supporting device I I embodying the features of the invention, the can having fitted over the top thereof the usual flanged lid I2, to the central portion of which is attached an upwardly arched handle I3.

As best shown in Figure2, the support II includes a main frame part I 5 formed from a single length of heavy wire, opposite end portions thereof constituting laterally spaced, front uprights I6 and IT, with the central portion of the wire reversely bent to provide a third upright I8, rearwardly of said front uprights, composed of two closely adjacent, co-extending portions I9 and 20, and intervening portions 2| and 22 between the upper ends of said portions I 9 and 20 and the upper ends of the front uprights I6 and I1, respectively, together forming a U-shaped top rail 2 la slightly wider than the upper portion of the can. Each upright has formed adjacent the lower end of the same a reversely bent loop 25 providing horizontal projections 26, 2'! and 28, 28, which act as stops to limit the depth to which the lower ends of the uprights may be projected into the earth or ground P, as shown in Figure 3.

At points well above said stop projectiOns the rear upright I8 is reversely bent in a vertical plane to provide a double eyelet 29 which is closed about the central portion of a U-shaped member 30 of heavy wire, the outer ends of which are received through oppositely inwardly projecting, closed eyelets 3| and 32 similarly formed in the front uprights, the member 30 being locked in place by having the ends thereof bent into eyelets 39 and 34. Thus, the U-member 39 reinforces the projections 29, SI and 32 as a supporting platform for a garbage can [0 (see Figures 1 and 3) to be well above the ground level. 2 I A holder 40 is provided for attaching the cover I2 to the top of the support II to be swingable from and toward the closed positions thereof substantially at right angles to normally upwardly extending, substantially spaced,

44 and 45, and the extreme end portions 50 and 5! are bent laterally oppositely outwardly, whereby said forwardly extending portions are compressible inwardly, against the inherent resiliency of the material of the holder, to be received through the handle 13 of the lid. When the end portions 5!! and 5| are released, they will yieldingly engage opposite sides of the handle, as best shown in Figure 1, inwhich position the lidwill be retained on the holder by the laterally extending ends 5B and 5|.

A garbage can or like support comprising a frame formed of relatively stiff, elongated material, upward extensions from free bottom ends of the frame material constituting laterally spaced front uprights, said front uprights being bent rearwardly at the top of the frame to provide opposite can-retaining side rails converging to a point of adjacency at the rear of the frame, downwardly bent continuations of said opposite side rails from said point of adjacency terminating at the bottom of the frame, means retaining together said downwardly bent continuations to constitute a rear supporting upright, said front and rear uprights having offset portions bent therein to provide stop shoulders at a level engageable with a ground surface when the bottom ends of the uprights are insorted in the ground, said uprights having looped portions formed therein to extend inwardly of the frame at a level intermediate said opposite side rails and said off-set portions and providing support for a said can received between said opposite rails, and a separate restraining member interconnecting said looped portions to hold said front and rear uprights in peripherally spaced relation, at least the portion of said frame above said looped portions being open at the front between said front uprights unobstructedly to receive a garbage can. from and toward said support thereof on said looped portions, a holder being pivotally mount- 'ed at the top rear of said frame to be releasably attached to the lid of a garbage can whereby the same is swingable from and toward closed position on the can supported in the frame, said holder comprising a separate length of relatively stiff wire formed at the central portion thereof to have laterally spaced eyelets receiving said opposite rails at points adjacent opposite sides of said rear upright to be swingable forwardly and rearwardly of the frame, the portion of said length intermediate said eyelets being looped to provide a stop element engageable with said rear upright in a rearwardly swung lid-raised position of the holder, the end portions of said length extending forwardly to be engageable through an arched handle on a said can lid by compressing the end portions together against the inherent resiliency of the wire, the extreme ends of said end portions being oppositely outturned to retain the lid on the holder.
