POWER DRIVEN AIR CIRCULATING FAN Edward J. Frick, Fairview Park, Ohio, assignor to Air Controls, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application September', 1950, Serial No. 186,389
This invention relates to Ventilating fans, land more particularly, to power-driven fans adaptedA to be readily inserted in a window frame, or carried from room to room.
An object of this invention is to provide an electrically operated Ventilating fan adapted` to be placed in a window in a, vertical position or placed in Various parts of a room in a horizontal position.
Another object is to provide a fan construction permitting adequateflow of air to the fan blades, when it is disposed in horizontal position on a floor or other surface, as well as, when it is disposed in a, vertical position.
' Other objects are, to provide means for retaining the ian in position at the bottom of a window sash, which means are also adapted to be used as a handle in carrying the fan; to provide a neat and attractive protective grille around the sides of the fans, to provide a relatively light weight fan adapted to be readily carried from room to room, to provide an attractively designed fan for a wide range of uses; and to provide a fan which is of simple durable construction and adapted to be produced at a relatively low c ost.

Fig.4 is a top plan view; while Fig. 5 is a -central section of the fan taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, showing the fan disposed in horizontal position.
In the drawings the numeral II indicates a base, crimped along three sides forming a flange I2, while the front margin is provided with an integral offset portion I3. A top member I4, corresponding in construction to the base II includes a similar flange I5, extending along three sides and a similar offset portion I6, while a front face member I1, extending from the base II to the top I4, is provided with rearwardly extending flange I8 crimped over the offset portion I3 of the base I I. The top margin of the face member I1 is provided with a similar flange I9 crimped over the offset portion I6 of the top I4. Spot welding or other suitable means may be used to unite offset portion I3 to the flange I8 and offset portion I6 to the flange I9.
3 Claims. (Cl. 23o-259) The front face member I'I is provided along its sides with flanges 20 formed by a crimping op; eration. Centrally the face'member I'I is vpro'-y vided with a circular opening 2 I, having an outwardly projecting ange 22 along its periphery, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 4 and 5. A circular front grille 23, of reti-culate construction, formed of a series of crimped wires disposed at right angles to each other and woven together is of convex configuration when mounted on the fan. A rim 24, having a rolled over bead portion 25 retainingA the outer periphery of the grille 23 is provided with a flange 26 adaptedV to be received in the outer periphery of the flange 22 of the face member Il and retained by a pressed fit. 1
A similarly formed reticulate Wire grille 2l', constituting the sides and back of the fan, having its bottom and top margins positioned inwardly of the bottom and top flanges I2 and I5 respectively, and suitably secured thereto, has its side margins positioned inwardly of the face flanges 20 and suitably secured thereto by means of cap screws 28 clamping the grille between strips of metal 39 and the flanges 20. Obviously, different types of protective grille material may be -used to accomplish the same purpose.
An electric motor 29, bolted to vertically ex tending brackets 3D suitably secured to the top I4 and base II, drives a fan 3| comprising four wide blades 32, formed of sheet metal, terminating centrally in a hub 33 mounted on a shaft' 34 driven by said motor. This direct drive construction has been found to be advantageous over belt or gear driven construction. Preferably a permanently lubricated motor is used, and if desired, a two-speed control may be provided. f
Two spaced handles 31, provided with rubber pads 38 secured to bolts and cooperating parts, operating in transverse slots in the top member I4, are positioned and arranged in such manner that they may be spaced apart a distance'corresponding with the width of a window sash, thus permitting a window sash to be lowered between them, and in this manner the fan may be supported in a window frame in a vertical position. The handles 31 may be moved in close proximity to each other to provide a convenient handle by which the fan may be carried.
For supporting the fan in a vertical position short rubber tipped feet 35 projecting downwardly from the base II are provided, while similar feet 36 projecting outwardly from the back of the fan provide support when the fan is disposed in a horizontal position, as illustrated in Fig. 5. Attention is directed to the location and 3 arrangement of the back feet 36. The two feet at the top thereof are secured to the top flange I5, while the lower two feet are secured to the base flange l2. Thus it will be seen that the top and base flanges I5 and I2 serve to retain the edges of the grille 21 in position, and in addition thereto function to support the fan while in a horizontal position'. It desired a vertically disposed reenforcingfstrip 4B extending from thetop flange I5 to the bottom flange I2 and suitably secured thereto, may be provided to prevent warping or bulging of the grille 21.
As shown in Fig. 5, when the fan is ina horizontal position on a floor ortable. thefdispositionV and arrangement of the griller! .permitsair'tof iiow into the fan through the sides and back thereof, thereby permitting an unobstructed ow of air into the fan, asindicated bythe arrows. The position and arrangemeniof the feet 36 and the motor supporting brackets 3B are such. that the entire.
