This invention relates to smoking pipes with jointed stems.
-An'objectof this invention is to provide a smoking pipe including a bowl, a mouthpiece and a stem in between the bowl and the mouthpiece and knuckle `joints connecting the stem Y to the bowl and the mouthpiece, the stem and mouthpiece being adapted to be folded into positions closely adjacent the bowl when the pipe is bers, the joints being so constructed as to form interconnecting passages between the mouthpiece, stem and the bowland allowing the lpassage of a pipe cleaner therethrough when the stem and mouthpiece portions are in their normal position relative to the bowl, the stem and mouthpiece portions being adapted to be swung about their interconnecting joints into positions adjacent the'bowl, the joint members when4 in such position being adapted to admit the entrance of separatepipe cleaners into the'mouthpiece portion and the bowl'portion for cleaning-theseparate portionsV individually. j

|5a. From the passage I1 there extends upwardly a pair of short passages I8, I9 communicating with the interior of the bowl portion II. The boss I6 is also formed with a counterbore 26 extending from the end 2l thereof, towards the passage I8, but terminating short thereof.
Fitted into the counterbore portion 29 of the boss I6 is a joint member 22 which comprises a cylindrical portion 23 received in the counterbore and provided with externally knurled surfaces 24 to frictionally engage the wall of the counterbore 29. The portion 23 may be formed with an annular groove .25 intermediate its ends. The member 22 may be fixed in bore 26 by means of an adhesive applied to the knurled surface and groove in the member, previous to insertion into the bore. Extending fromrtheportion 23 is an enlarged cylindrical portion 26 having an external diameter equal to the external diameter of boss I6 and including an inner radial surface 21 adapted to abut the surface 2! on the boss. Extending upwardly from the Vbottom of cylindrical portion 26 is a transverse radially disposed surface 23 parallel to surface 21 and terminating short of the longitudinal axis of the portion. Extending from the upper edge of surface V29 is a transverse part cylindrical surface 29 Whose axis is at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the portion 26, and which terminates above the longitudinal axis of the portion. Extending from the upper edge of the cylindrical surface 29. is a planar surface 36 which is inclined rearwardly and upwardly toward the upper surface of portion 26 at an angle of substantially 45. Theportions 23 and 25 are formed with an` axial through passage 3l which extends-to surface 29 and communicates with passage l1 in boss I5.
The portion 26 is also formed with a pair of similar cut out curved recesses 32 with Ydovetail crosssections on opposite sides thereof which intersect the surfaces 28, 129 and 3&1. Each -recess 32 comprises a part cylindrical surface 33 having-a. radius larger than the radius of surface 29. The surface 33 is concentric with cylindrical surface 29. The surface 33 extends inwardly toward passage. 3l but terminates short thereof. A surface 34 vextends from .the inner edge of surface 33 to the outer edge of surface 29, said surface `34 being conically inclined inwardly from the edge of surface 29v to the surface 33, as shown in Fig. 7, forming an arcuate dovetailed recess.
The stem portion I2 comprises a cylindrical member 35 formed with an axial passage 36. Inserted into one end of the passage 361s Aa joint member 31, cooperable. with joint member 22 in the manner hereinafter described. Y rlhe joint member 31 comprises a cylindrical portion 38 having an external diameter which permits the member to be .fitted into passage 36v of member 3 5-and adhesively secured therein. The mem-4 abutting relation, the surfaces 29, 4I form a the upper edge of cylindrical surface 4I to the outer surface of portion 39, being inclined upwardly and forwardly, substantially at an angle of 45.
The member 31 is formed with an axial passage 43 extending through portions 38, 33 and coaxial with passage 3I on member 22 and having a diameter larger than the diameter of passage 3I in member 22. The member 31 is also formed with recesses 32 on portion 35, similar to those on member 22. When the members 22, 31 have their surfaces 28, 49 in abutting relation, the surfacesv 33, 34 form a continuous curved groove extending from one member to the other. A member 31a which is entirely similar to member 31 is fitted into the opposite end of stem portion I2 and adhesively secured therein. The member 31a has a passage 43 coaxial with passage 43 on member 31.
A tubular member 45 is axially disposed within the passage 36 of stem I2 with an external diameter less than the internal diameter of passages 43 and with its end portions projecting into passages 43 of members 31, 31a.
The tubular member 45 4is positioned within passages 43 of members 31, 31a by means of a pair of similar headed tubular members 46 which are slidably disposed at opposite ends of the passages with their inner ends telescoped into the ends of member 45. The cylindrical head portion 48 of members 46 slidably engages the inner surface of passage 43 and forms an annular shoulder 48a. The head portions 48 include an outer part spherical surface 49. An axial through passage 50 formed in member 46 extends from surface 49 and communicates with the interior of tubular member 45. A coil spring 5I is mounted on member 45, being disposed between the outer surface of the member and the inner surface of passage 43 of members 31, 31a. The ends of the spring lrengage the shoulders 48a on members 46, urging them outwardly of passages 43 in members 31, .31a for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
The members 22, 31 are pivotally jointed together by means of a knuckle 55. The knuckle 55 comprises an intermediate cylindrical portion or cock pin 56V formed with a transverse through opening 51. The outer surface ofA portion 56 is complementary to the cylindrical surfaces 29, 4I of the members 22, 31. Extending from one side of portion 56 is an enlarged circular head 53. As shown in Fig. 2, the head 59 is disposed so that its axis is at right angles to passage 51 in portion 56. The head 58 comprises an outer planar surface 69, from which extends a cylindrical surface 6 i.. The surface 6I is complementary to surfaces 33 on members 22, 31. Extending from the inner edge of surface 5I to tothe portion 56 is an undercut conical surface 62 complementary to the surface 34 of members 22, 31. Surfaces 28 and 46 are in planes passing through the axis of the cock pin 56.
Ahead 58a similar to head 58 is formed with an axial opening 63 which is adapted to receive the end of portion` 56 opposite head 58, being force fitted thereon. The head 58a is also formed with an under cut conical surface 62 complementary to the surface 34 of members 22, 31. vThe portion 56 of the knuckle 55 is formed with a concave socket or recess 66 at one end of opening 51. The recess 66 is complementary to the surface 43 of headed member 46 and is adapted to receive the same when thev member 46 is properly aligned with the knuckle 55.

The joint members H2, I3 are entirely similar tol joint members 22, 31 respectively, except that they are formed wi-th annular recesses |25 on opposite sides thereof which are complementary to the flanges' ||8, ||8a on the heads ||6, ||6a.
The knuckle joint I is formed by assembling the joint members ||2, |13 with knuckle members ||4 and then force fitting the stem portion 20 of knuckle member ||9 into the hollow of knuckle piece H4. The openings |22 in stemportion l5 are adapted to register with the passage |2| in stem portion |20 when the knuckle is in4 its final assembled form, as shown in Fig. 14. The tubular member y61 xes the knuckle to the member ||2. The stem portion H5 is formed with a recess |26 at one of the openings |22 to receive the portion 49 of spring pressed member 46.
The undercuts |1a on the knuckle are` adapted to substantially eliminate play at the joints. The openings |22 and passage |2| inthe knuckles allow the entry-of pipe cleaners.- 10, in the .manner previously described.
It will thus be Vseen that there .is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention. are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might. be made of the above invention, and as various changes might -be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the yaccompanying d-rawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
.Having thus described my vinvention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A smoking'pipe comprising a bowl having an extension, a stem portion, joint members affixed to the ends of said extension and said stem portion and a` knuckle joint interconnecting said joint members, said stem portion, knuckle joint, joint members and extension being formed with straight, coaxially, aligned through passages, said knuckicjoint comprising a member having an 'intermediate portion extending transversely of the stem portion, and circular heads at opposite ends of said intermediate portion, said heads being of dovetail cross-section, one of ,said
heads being annular and said joint members having grooves to receive said heads and portions contacting said intermediate portion.
.2. vIn a smoking pipe comprising a bowl having an extension and stem portion, a joint betweenV said extension andstem portion comprising a pair of joint members and a knuckle between said members, said members being formed with through passages, said knuckle comprising an intermediate portion formed with a through passage adapted to be aligned with the through passages in said joint members, and
circular heads at opposite ends of said inter- 8: mediate portion. said: heads being formed with inner conical surfaces, said joint members having surfaces, contacting; one another when said stem portion and extension are in alignment, and said joint members having surfaces disposed at to one another and Iat 225 to the first mentioned surfaces when said first ,mentioned surfaces contact one another, and said second mentioned surfaces being adapted to contact one another when said stem portion is swung to a position Iat right angles to said eX- tension, said joint members having curved grooves complementary to and adapted to receive parts of said circular heads and means to x said intermediate portion to a joint member.
3. In a smoking pipe comprising a bowl having an extension and stem portion, a joint between said extension and stem portion comprising a pair of joint members and a knuckle between said members, said members being formed with .through passages, said knuckle comprising an intermediate portion formed with a straight through passage adapted to be aligned with the through passages in said joint members and coaxially therewith, and circular heads at opposite ends of said intermediate portion, said heads being formed with inner conical surfaces, said joint members having surfaces contacting one another when said stem portion and extension are in alignment and said joint members having surfaces disposed at 90 to one another and at 225 to the iirst mentioned surfaces when said rst mentioned surfaces contact one another, and said second mentioned surfaces being adapted to contact one another when said stem portion is swung to a position at right angles to said extension, said joint members having curved grooves complementary to and adapted to receive parts of said circular heads and means to i'ix said intermediate portion to a joint member, said means including a tube extending into the through passage in the intermediate portion and also into a joint member.
4. In a smoking pipe comprising a bowl having an extension and stem portion, a joint between said extension and stem portion comprising a pair of joint members and a knuckle between said members, said members being formed with through passages, said knuckle comprising an intermediate portion formed with a through passage adapted to be aligned with the through passages in said joint members, and circular heads at opposite ends of said intermediate portion, said heads being formed with inner conical surfaces, said joint members having surfaces contacting one another when said stem portion and extension are in alignment and said joint members having surfaces disposed at 90 to one another and at 225 to the rst mentioned surfaces when said first mentioned surfaces contact one another, and said second mentioned surfaces being adapted to contact one another when said stem portion is swung to a position at right angles to said extension, said joint members having curved grooves complementary to and adapted tc receive parts of said circular heads and means to nx said intermediate portion to ajoint member, said means including a tube extending into the through passage in the intermediate portion and also into a joint member, and a spring pressed tubular member within the joint member in said stem portion adapted to contact said intermediate portion, the passage in said spring pressed tubular member communicating with the passage in the intermediate portion when said stem cular heads at the ends of each intermediate portion, the said heads having conical under out surfaces at their inner sides and said joint members having portions engaging said under cut surfaces and portions engaging said intermediate portion, said extension being formed with a through passage and said stem portion and mouthpiece being formed with through passages, said through passages being in straight coaxial alignment with one another and forming a smoke passageway through which a pipe cleaner may be inserted without bending.
6. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl formed with an extension, a mouthpiece and a stem portion between said extension and mouthpiece, and knuckle joints interconnecting said stem portion with said extension and mouthpiece respectively, each knuckle joint comprising a pair of joint members and a knuckle between said joint members, each knuckle comprising an intermediate p-ortion formed with a through passage, and circular heads at the ends of each intermediate portion, the said heads having conical under cut surfaces at their inner sides and said joint members having portions engaging said under cut surfaces and portions engaging said intermediate portion, said extension being formed with a through passage and said stem portion and mouthpiece being formed with through passages, said through passages being in straight coaxial alignment with one another and forming a smoke passageway through which a pipe cleaner may be inserted without bending, and means for attaching one knuckle with its joint members to said extension and said stem portion and the other knuckle with its joint members to said mouthpiece and said stem portion.

A smoking pip-e comprising a bowl formed with an extension, a mouthpiece and a stem portion between said extension and mouthpiece, and knuckle joints interconnecting said stem portion with said extension and mouthpiece respectively, each knuckle joint comprising a pair of joint members and a knuckle between said joint members, each knuckle comprising an intermediate portion formed with a through passage, and circular heads at the ends of each intermediate portion, the said heads having conical under cut surfaces at their inner sides and said joint members having portions engaging said under out surfaces and portions engaging said intermediate portion, said extension being formed with a through passage and said stem portion and mouthpiece being formed with through passages, and means for attaching lone knuckle with its joint members to said extension and said stem portion and the other knuckle with its joint vmembers to said mouthpiece and said stern portion, and spring pressed tubes in the through portion of said stern portion pressing against said intermediate portions, and communicating with the passages in said intermediate portion when said extension, stem portion and mouthpiece are in alignment.
10 8. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl portion including an extension formed with a passage, a stem portion formed with a passage, a joint pivotally connecting the stem portion to the extension, a mouthpiece portion formed with a pas- Y sage, a jointl pivotally connecting the mouthpiece portion .to the stern portion, one of said joints comprising a knuckle formed with an opening connecting the passages in said bowl portion and stem portion, the other of said joints comprising a knuckle formed with an opening connecting the passages in said mouthpiece portion and stem portion, a hollow member slidably mounted within each end of the passage yof said stem portion, each of said slidable members contacting a knuckle, the hollow portion of each of said hollow members registering with the opening in the contacting knuckle and resilient means for maintaining said hollow members in engagement with said knuckles whereby to prevent leakage at said joints.
9. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl portion including an extension formed with a passage, a
stem portion formed with a passage, a joint pivotally connecting the stem portion to the extension, a mouthpiece portion formed with a passage, a joint pivotally connecting the mouthpiece portion to the stem portion, one of said joints comprising a knuckle formed with an opening connecting the passages in said bowl portion and stein portion, the other of said joints comprising a knuckle formed with an opening connecting the passages in. said mouthpiece portion and stem portion, a hollow member slidably mounted within each end of the passage of said stem portion, each of said slidable members contacting a knuckle, the hollow portion of each of said hollow members registering with the opening in the contacting knuckle, and resilient means for maintaining said hollow members in engagement with said knuckles whereby to prevent leakage at said joints, each of said knuckles being formed with a recess at one end of the opening in said knuckle, each of said slidable members being formes with a surface complementary to the recess in the adjacent knuckle and received therein when the stem and mouthpiece portions are aligned with said bowl extension.
10. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, a mouthpiece, a stem portion, knuckle joints between the stem portion and the mouthpiece and the stem portion and thebowl whereby the stem portion may be swung upwardly to parallel the bowl and the mouthpiece may be swung downwardly over the upper end of the bowl, the mouthpiece, stem portion, knuckle joints and the bowl each being formed with a through passage, said stem portion having means to uncover the passages in the knuckle joint connecting said stem portion to the bowl when said stem portion is swung upwardly to a position paralleling the bowl, and said mouthpiece having means to uncover the passage in the mouthpiece when swinging said mouthpiece from a position in alignment with the stem portion to a position at right angles to the stem portion, and spring pressed means comprising slidable tubular members in said stem portion to contact said knuckle joints for seal ng the passages against leakage in said knuckle joints.
11. In a smoking pipe, a bowl extension and a stem portion, a joint between said extension and stem portion comprising a pair of joint members and a, knuckle between said members, said members being formed with through passages, said knuckle comprising an intermediate portion xed to a joint member and formed with a through passage adapted to be aligned with the through passages in said joint members, and circular heads at opposite ends of said intermediate portion, said heads being formed with inner conical surfaces, said joint members having surfaces contacting one another when said stem portion and extension are in alignment and said joint members having surfaces disposed at 90 to one another and at 225 to the rst mentioned surfaces when said rst mentioned surfaces contact one another, and said second mentioned surfaces being adapted to contact one another when said stem portion is swung to a position at right angles to said extension, and said joint members having curved grooves complementary to and adapted to receive said conical surfaces of said circular heads.
12. In a smoking pipe, a bowl extension and a stem portion, a joint between the extension and stem portion comprising a member formed with a through passage which is fixed to the extension and formed with dovetail recesses, a second member formed with a through passage, fixed to the stem portion and formed with dovetail recesses similar to those on said rst mentioned member and a knuckle engaging said members and permitting pivotal movement of said stem portion relative to said bowl, said knuckle being fixed to the member on the bowl and being formed with a through passage aligned with the passages in said members and being further formed with portions disposed in the dovetail recesses in said members.
13. In a smoking pipe, a joint comprising a pair of aligned members pivotally interconnected by a knuckle, each of said members being formed with a passage adapted to be aligned with each other when said members are aligned with each other, said knuckle including an intermediate portion formed with a passage interconnecting the passages in said members when said members are aligned, and a tubular member disposed in the passage in one of said members and the passage in the knuckle to x said knuckle relative to said one member, and interengageable means on said members and said knuckle to retain said knuckle against transverse movement relative to said members, said members forming a right angle and having means exposing passages in the intermediate portion, when the pipe is in a folded position.
14. A smoking pipe comprising an extension formed with a passage, a stem portion formed with a passage, means pivotally interconnecting said extension and stem portion, said interconnecting means being formed with passages interconnecting the passages in said extension and said stem portion when said extension is aligned with said stem portion, a mouthpiece portion formed with a passage, means pivotally interconnecting said mouthpiece portion and said stem portion, said last mentioned interconnecting means being formed with passages interconnecting the passages in said mouthpiece and stem portion when said mouthpiece portion is aligned with said stem portion, a tubular member in the passage of said stem portion, a tubular member in the passage of said interconnecting means on said extension, in registering relation to the tubular member in the stem portion when said stem portion is aligned with said extension, and a tubular member in the passage of said interconnecting means on the mouthpiece portion in registering relation to the tubular member in the stem portion when said mouthpiece portion is aligned with said stem portion.
15. In a smoking pipe comprising a bowl extension and a stern portion, a joint between the bowl extension andrstem portion comprising a member formed with a through passage, and mounted on the bowl extension and formed With arcuate recesses in opposite sides thereof, a second member formed with a through passage, iixed to the stem portion and formed with arcuate recesses in opposite sides thereof, and a knuckle fixed to the member on said bowl extension, and engaging the other member for permitting pivotal movement of said stem portion relative to said bowl extension, said knuckle being formed with a passage adapted to be aligned with the passages in said members and being formed with circular flange portions disposed in the recesses in said members.

A smoking pipe comprising a bowl extension formed with a passage, a rst joint member on the bowl extension, said rst joint member being formed with a passage communicating with the passage in said bowl extension, a cock pin nxed on said iirst joint member and formed With a through passage traversing the axis of said cock pin and in communication with the passage in said rst joint member, a second joint member pivotally connected to said cock pin, a stem portion having one end attached to said second joint member, a third joint member at the other end of said stem portion, said stem portion and its attached joint members being formed with passages therethrough, a mouth piece portion, a fourth joint member thereon provided with a fixed cock pin pivotally connected to said third joint member, said last cock pins mouth piece and fourth joint member being formed with through passages traversing the axis of said last mentioned cock pin, all of said passages forming a straight, continuous, through passage when saidistem portion and mouth piece portion are in alignment with said bowl extension so that a pipe cleaner can be passed therethrough, said mouth piece portion and its fourth joint member being swingable upwardly through an angle of ninety degrees to the stern portion, and said stem portion and its second and third joint members being swingable together with the upswung mouth piece upwardly through an angle of ninety degrees to the rst joint member, the front end of said through passage in said first cock pin being uncovered in the said upswung position of said stem portion to allow a pipe cleaner to be passed therethrough, and the rear end of the through passage in said second cock pin being uncovered in said upswung position to allow passage of a pipe cleaner therethrough and through the mouth piece portion.
17. In a smoking pipe, a first stem portion formed with an axial passage therethrough, a second stem portion formed with an axial passage therethrough, a pair of pivotally interconnected joint members, swingable from one extreme position of ninety degrees with respect to each other to a second fixed extreme position of one hundred and eighty degrees with respect to each other, and each formed with an axial passage, one of said joint members being attached to one end of said rst stem portion, and a cock pm formed with a transverse through passage iixed on said last mentioned joint member the other Joint member being attached to oneI end of sa1d second stem portion, the passage in the rst stem portion, the passage in the joint member attached thereto, and the passage in said cock pin being in straight, coaxial alignment and in communication with each other and forming a continuous duct and said passage in said cock pin being uncovered by the second joint member when said joint members are ninety degrees with respect to each other, whereby a pipe cleaner may be inserted through the passages in said cock pin, said first joint member and first stem portion for cleaning.
18. The combination of claim 17 in combination with a mouth piece portion formed with an axial passage therethrough, a second pair of pivotally interconnected vmembers swingable from one xed extreme position of ninety degrees with respect to each other, to a second fixed extreme position of one hundred and eighty degrees with respect to each other, and formed with an axial passage in each of said members of said second pair, one of said members of said second pair being attached to the other end of said second stem portion, the other member of said second pair being attached to said mouth piece portion, a second cock pin formed with a transverse through passage being fixed on said last mentioned member of said second pair, the passage in the mouth piece portion, the passage in the member attached thereto, and the passage in said second cock pin being in straight, coaxial alignment and in communication with each other and forming a continuous duct, whereby a pipe cleaner may be inserted therethrough for cleaning purposeswhen said members of said second pair are ninety degrees with respect to each other.
19. The combination of claim 18, the passages 14 in said second stem portion and joint members attached thereto being in straight coaxial alignment, and in communication with each other, and forming a continuous duct closed at both ends when said members in each pair are ninety degrees with respect to each other.
20. The combination of claim 18, the passages in said second stem portion and joint members attached thereto being in straight coaxial alignment, and in communication with each other, and forming a continuous duct closed at both ends when said members in each pair are ninety degrees with respect to each other, all of said ducts being in straight coaxial alignment and forming a, continucus smoke passage when said members in each pair are one hundred and eighty degrees with respect to each other.
