2 Claims.
This invention relates to packaging articles such as valve tappets, including the tappet rods, and which might be broadly described as articles consisting of stems and an annular laterally projecting flange at the ends of the stems. Within this same category may be included certain types of bullets and shells and a wide variety of machined parts.
In my earlier Patent No. 2,457,197, dated December 28, 1948, I have described and claimed a dispensing holder for articles of the class set forth above. Reference is hereby made to said earlier patent.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a dispensing holder for articles of the class set iorth which will have all the advantages of the structure of my earlier patent, but which will be less expensive to manufacture and which will use less material.
This and other objects of my invention which will appear as the description proceeds, or which will be pointed out specifically hereinafter, I accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts of which I shall now describe an exemplary embodiment.
Reference is made to the drawings forming a part hereof and in which:
Figure l is a plan view of a blank from which an end wall support is made;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the completed end wall support;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3-4 of Figure 4 showing a pair of end wall supports with a plurality of valves supported thereon;
Figure 4 is a detailed cross-sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a shipping container, parts being broken away to show how the holders are inserted, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a pair of end supports constituting a dispensing holder with only two valves remaining, showing that the holder still retains its set up condition.
According to the present invention the end support members are constituted of rectangular blanks of a stiff, relatively thick material, such, for example, as corrugated paperboard. Such a blank is indicated at In in Figure l. Longitudinally of the blank and spaced at equal distances from the center line thereof, there are provided the score lines II and II.
The blank i0 is provided with a parallel series of slots, alternate ones of which are longer slots 2 and the remaining ones of which are shorter slots. The longer slots are indicated at l3 and the shorter slots are indicated at M.
It will be observed that one end of each of the slots lies in a line parallel to an edge of the blank and spaced from the edge of the blank by a distance slightly greater than the radii of the annular, laterally extending flange portion of the valve or other article to be supported. The alternate slots 13 extend across the blank towards the other edge thereof and terminate in a line parallel to said other edge and spaced therefrom the same distance as mentioned above.
The remainin shorter slots I4 extend across the score line I2 and terminate substantially in the score line II, which of course is parallel to the blank edges adjacent the center of the blank.
In setting up the end supports the blank is folded on the score lines H and I2, thereby coming into an isosceles triangular cross-section configuration having the side walls [5 and I6, and the top wall IT. The portions I 5 and I B are then secured together by stitching, by adhesive or by staples as indicated at 18.
In use, a pair of end supports such as shown in Figure 2, are placed parallel to each other as seen in Figures 3 to 6 inclusive with the portions I5 on the outside and with the portions l6 facing each other.
It will be observed that the arrangement of slots described above produces in the finished end support as shown in Figure 2, a series of slots l9 alternating with a series of grooves 20. In assembling the dispensing holder, as best seen in Figures 3 and 6, the two end supports are arranged with the slots is in one end support opposite the groove Zll in the other end support. The valves or other articles are then placed in the end supports as shown in Figures 3 to 6 inclusive, with the neck portion adjacent the valve head lying in the slot IS, with the tappet end of the valve stem lying in the groove 20. In this manner the valves are maintained separate from each other, so that nicking of one valve by contact with the other is obviated.
By virtue of the spacing of the end of the slots is from the carton edges, the edge of the annular extending portion of the valve head is raised above the supporting surface, as best seen in Figure 4, and if the slots 13 and M are spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the radii of the annular laterally extending flange portions, then the series of valve heads are kept out of contact with each other as best seen in Figure 3. Preferably the widths of the slots I 3 and M as cut number -o'f holder assemblies;
in the blank ill will be such that the valve stems will fit snugly therein, as by wedging. In this way the dispensing holder will be self-sustaining even with only two valves left in the holder, as best seen in Figure 6.
In packaging the holders filled with tappets, it is useful to provide containers such as indicated at 2| in Figure' 5,withich may holdtany desired These are packed in stacks with sheets 22 of board between each stack.
In use a single holder comprising thetwo-end wall supports, together with the valves held therein, may be lifted out ofithe eontainerizliand placed upon a work table-so thatthe individual valves may be withdrawn as required.
