Patented Oct. 27, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FLEXIBLE BAND TURNING T Warren W. Johnson, St. Joseph, Mo. Application April 10, 1952, Serial No. 281,553
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a device designed for use by automobile mechanics, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device which may be readily and easily positioned for gripping contact with the usual fan pulley of a motor vehicle engine for rotating the crank shaft of the engine as is necessary when repairin the motor bearings when the engine is unmounted.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is adjustable to adapt it for use in positioning over fan pulleys of various diameters.
Still another object of the invention is to pro vide a tool of this character embodying a flexible jaw removably mounted on an operating handle, to the end that the jaw may be readily and easily removed and replaced by a larger or smaller jaw to adapt the tool for use on a fan pulley of a predetermined diameter.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a removable jaw and handle for supporting the jaw, the means for connecting the jaw to the handle embodying pins over which sleeves carried by the movable jaw are positioned, eliminating the necessity of using a tool such as a screw driver or Wrench to remove and remount a jaw on the handle.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it bein understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a tool constructed in accordance with the invention as position-ed on the fan pulley of an unmounted engine block to effect rotation of the crank. shaft and other moving parts of the motor during repairing of an unmounted motor.
Fig. 2 is a fragmental elevational view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device comprises the handle 5 which constitutes the lever of the device. The reference character 6 indicates a plurality of spaced pivot pins 6 which extend laterally from one side of the handle 5, adjacent to one end thereof, as clearly shown by the drawing.
The device also comprises a jaw I which is in the form of a band supplied with tubes 8 or sleeves which fit over the pivot pins ina manner as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing, to secure the pins of the band jaw to the handle. Due to the arrangement of the spaced pivot pins, it is obvious that the diameter of the jaw I may be varied to meet various requirements of use.
It might be further stated that when the device is to be used for effecting rotation of the engine crank and movable parts of an engine of exceptionally large size, the jaw I may be removed by merely slipping the sleeves from the pivot pins and positioning a jaw of larger diameter on the handle. by slipping the sleeves of the substitute jaw over the pivot pins.
It is obvious that when the band jaw has been positioned around a fan pulley of a motor, and the handle is tilted to the left, the band jaw will be moved into gripping relation with the fan pulley. Upon further movement of the handle, it is obvious that rotary movement may be imparted to the fan pulley and the crank shaft of the engine or motor to change the positions of the moving parts of the engine, which is necessary during the repairing of the engine.
In order that the device will securely grip the fan pulley, a wedge-shaped friction member indicated by the reference character 9 is secured to the inner surface of the band or jaw 1, the construction of the friction member 9 being such as to wedge in the grooved fan pulley gripping the same.
In the use of the device as a means for rotating an unmounted engine, the usual generator adjusting nut is loosened, permitting the usual fan belt to be removed.
The device may now be positioned as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing and by pulling the handle 5, the band jaw will be moved into gripping relation with the fan pulley in a manner as described. By operating the handle, the position of the crank shaft of the engine as well as other movable parts of theengine may be changed.
In view of the drawing and foregoing description, it is believed that a further disclosure of the structure and. operation of the device will be unnecessary for a complete understanding of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A tool comprising a combined handle and lever, a plurality of spaced pin extending laterally from said handle and lever adjacent toone end thereof, a flexible jaw comprising a metallic band with sleeves secured to the ends thereof, said sleeves selectively positioned over said pins, removably securing the ends of the band to said combined handle and lever, and one of said sleeves bearing against the article being turned 15 by the tool, thereby providing a fulcrum for the tool.
