PARING KNIFE HAVING WATER DISCHARGING MEANS Filed April 26, 1950 IN V EN TOR.
Patented Oct. 27, 1953 PARING KNIFE HAVING WATER DISCHARGING MEANS Floyd R. Barbee, San Gabriel, Calif. Application April 26, 1950, Serial No. 158,267
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a paring knife and it is an object of the invention to provide a knife of this kind provided with means to substantially eliminate any strong or otherwise objectionable odor that may emanate from the vegetable or the like during a paring operation.
This invention also has for an object to provide a knife of this kind including a blade and a handle therefor and wherein the handle is provided with means whereby water may be discharged upon the blade while the knife is in use to wash the vegetable or the like and to absorb or dissolve the small particle of moisture that may be discharged from the vegetable or the like.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved paring knife whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a paring knife constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, with an end of the supply hose being shown connected thereto;
Figure 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the knife as comprised in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, I denotes the blade of the knife of a conventional design and dimensions and which is continued at its inner or rear end by a flat tang 2 which is inserted within an end portion of a handle 3.
The handle 3 is of preferred configuration and dimensions and is provided therethrough at its axial center with bore 4. The portion of the bore 4 at the extremity of the handle 3 into which the tang 2 is inserted is radially enlarged as at 5. with the tang 2 being disposed radially thereacross whereby discharge ports a are provided at opposite sides of the tang 2 and discharged at opposite sides of the inner portion of the blade I. The portion is also of a length substantially coextensive in length with the tang 2.
The outer end of the handle 3 is provided with an outstanding nipple 6 through which the bore 4 is continued and coupling with this nipple 8 is an extremity of a flexible bore or conduit 1. This bore or conduit 1 is of a material length and is adapted to be coupled to a water faucet or other source of water under pressure.
In use, water under pressure is discharged through the ports a at opposite sides of the blade I and which Water discharge is in the form of a spray. This discharge water serves to wash the vegetable or the like being pared and also absorbs or dissolves the minute particles of moisture that may discharge from the vegetable or the like.
It has been clearly established in use the knife as herein comprised permits paring of onions or other like vegetables or fruits to be pared with the elimination of obnoxious odor and/ or smarting or running eyes.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a paring knife constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
A paring knife comprising a blade, a tang extending longitudinally of the blade at one end thereof and having less width than the blade, an elongate handle having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough and opening through both ends thereof, a nipple extending from one end of the handle and having the bore passing therethrough for connection of a water supplying tube to the handle, said bore at the end remote from the nipple being of enlarged diameter through a part of its length to the adjacent end of the handle, and said handle having a central slot formed longitudinally therein through the length of the portion of the bore of enlarged diameter, the slot lying in the plane of the axis of the bore, said slot receiving said tang whereby the tang divides the bore through the enlarged portion to provide water outlet ports discharging along opposite side faces of the tang and blade.
