Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved gluing attachment for rotary bottle crown cap assembling machines of this invention includes a dauber hub 10 mounted on a stand H that is positioned on the rail ring cover I [3 of a bottle cap assembling machine, a glue carrying wheel 12 rotatably mounted in a glue receptacle 13, which is mounted on the stand through a bracket I4, a glue storage container I5, and suitable driving and operating instrumentalities.
The dauber hub I0 is formed as shown in Figures 3 and 7, and the hub, which is actuated through mitre gears 16 and I1, is provided with a sleeve 18 having a bore l9 therethrough. The sleeve is mounted on a stud 20 on the outer end of which a gear 2| is positioned, and the stud is provided with a wing nut-like head by which it may readily be turned by hand. The end of the stud is provided with left hand threads with which it is threaded into a socket 22; in a collar 24 on the outer surface of the mitre gear l1 and integral therewith, and the face of the hub in is provided with a circular recess 23 which receives the end of the collar, as shown in Figure '7. The collar 24 is also provided with a positioning pin 25 that extends into an opening 26 in the dauber hub l0 which provides means for locating the rubber dauber pads so that they register with the crown caps inthe crown sprocket.
The daubers are formed with round rubber pads 21. which have small openings 28 therein and thesepads are spaced to register with crown caps in the crown sprocket disc 29, as shown in Figure 6.
The dauber pads 21 are mounted in cups 3!] on the outer ends of stems 3|, and the stems, which are provided with flat sections 32, are positioned in radially disposed openings 33 in a rim 34 of the dauber hub Ill. The stems are securedin the rim by set screws 35 which are threaded in the rim, and positioned to contact the flat surfaces of the stems ofthe dauber pads. By this means the daubers are accurately positioned so that they will engage the inner surfaces of the crown caps with any pressure desired.
The stand II, on which the dauber hub is mounted, is provided with a bearing 36 at the upper end of which a shaft 31, on which the gear H is mounted is journaled. The mitre gear ['6 that meashes with the gear I! is mounted on a spindle 38 also journaled in the stand I i, and on the lower end of the spindle is a gear 39 that meshes with the crown sprocket gear '40, as shown in Figure 5, and which provides means for driving the gluing attachment.
The gear 2! on the outer end of the stud 2D drives a gear 4| on a shaft 42 through pinions 43 and 44 on an arm 45 which is pivotally mounted in a casing 46 by a pin 41 and the arm is resiliently held by a spring 48 so that the gears are retained in operative engagement as the position of the glue carrying wheel 12 is adjusted in relation to the dauber hub ID. The shaft 42 is journaled in bearings or sockets 49 and 50 in the upper ends of posts 5! and 52 in the sides of the receptacle l3, and the end of the shaft 42 in the bearing 49 is secured in position by a spring clip 53.
The gear housing or casing 45, which provides a guard or cover for the gears 2! and 4!, is carried by the stud 20 and shaft 42 with a wall 96 of the housing provided with an opening I96 in which the hub of the gear 2| is journaled, and a similar opening I99 is provided in the cover plate 89 in which the opposite end of the hub of the gear is journaled. At the opposite end of the housing, the shaft 42 extends through the slot 9'! in the wall 95 and also through the slot 98 in the cover plate. By this means the housing remains stationary with the gears turning therein, and the distance between the gears is adjustable.
The receptacle I3 is formed with an arcuate inner end 54 that fits snugly around the wheel 12 and a triangular-shape outer end 55, and the intermediate part is provided with an elongated hub 56 which extends from one side, and through which a glue passage 51 is provided that opens into the receptacle at a point below the glue carrying wheel l2. The upper side of the outer end of the hub 56 is provided with a collar 58 which has vertically disposed ribs 59 on the outer surface, and a cap 60, threaded on a neck 6| of the glue container l5 fits snugly over the ribs with the con.- tainer in the inverted position, as shown in Figure 12, wherein glue is being fed to the receptacle 13 as it is used therefrom. The side walls of the outer end of the hub 56 are provided with brackets 62 and 63 in which adjusting screws 64 and 65 are clamped by screws 66 and 67. The screws '64 and 65 engage the lower end of the glue container cap and thereby provide means for adjusting the position of the container to regulate the amount of glue in the passage 51, and consequently in the receptacle.
A cleaning plug 68 having a finger gripping tab 69 on the outer end is threaded in the outer end of the hub 56 to provide means for brushing out the accumulated glue in the passage 51.
The cap is provided with a throat 10 havmg a conical shape inner surface H which forms a valve seat for a valve 72 on the upper end of a stem 13, and the lower end of the stem is provided with a ball 14 which, with the parts in the position shown in Figure 12, rests upon the inner surface of the hub 56 and supports the valve 12 in an upper position in which the valve is open so that glue is free to pass therethrough. When the glue container [5 is removed the ball drops downwardly and draws the valve into the seat thereby closing the lower end of the con tainer and preventing glue spilling therefrom. It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangementof the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A gluing attachment for bottle crown cap assembling machines comprising a stand, a horizontally disposed shaft journaled in said stand, a dauber hub removably mounted on one end of the said shaft, a plurality of spaced radially disposed daubers extended from said dauber hub, a glue receptacle mounted on said stand, a glue carrying wheel journaled in said receptacle and positioned whereby the peripheral surface thereof is in contact with a dauber of the said dauber hub, and transmission means for rotating the said glue carrying wheel from the dauber hub whereby the surface speed of the wheel is less than the traveling speed of the daubers so that as one dauber leaves the surface of the wheel a following dauber contacts the surface of the wheel with the leading edge thereof substantially engaging the trailing edge of the area on the surface of the wheel contacted by the preceding dauber.
2. A gluing attachment for bottle crown cap assembling machines comprising a stand, a vertically disposed shaft journaled in the said stand, gears on the upper and lower ends of the shaft, a horizontally disposed shaft journaled in the upper part of the stand, a gear on the horizontally disposed shaft positioned to mesh with the gear on the upper end of the vertically disposed shaft, a collar having a pin extended therefrom and having a socket with left hand threads therein carried by and integral with the gear on the horizontally disposed shaft, a dauber hub having a rim concentric with the axis of the hub and having spaced radially disposed glue applying pads extended from the rim thereof positioned against the face of the said collar and having an opening therein positioned to receive the said pin extended from the said collar, a stud extended through the dauber hub and threaded into the said socket for securing the dauber hub on the collar, a glue receptacle mounted on the stand, means feeding glue to the said receptacle, a glue carrying wheel journaled in the said receptacle and positioned whereby the peripheral surface thereof engages the pads of the daubers, and transmission means for rotating the said glue carrying wheel by the stud on which the dauber hub is mounted whereby the surface speed of the Wheel is less than the traveling speed of the daubers so that as one pad leaves the surface of the wheel a following pad contacts the surface of the wheel with the leading edge thereof substantially engaging the trailing edge of the area on the surface of the wheel contacted by the preceding dauber.
3. In a gluing attachment for bottle crown cap assembling machines, the combination which comprises a stand adapted to be mounted on a bottle crown cap assembling machine, a vertically disposed shaft journaled in the stand and having a gear on the lower end thereof positioned to mesh with the crown sprocket gear of the machine, a horizontally disposed shaft having a collar with a pin eccentrically positioned on the outer face journaled in the upper part of the stand, said collar having a socket in the center thereof and said socket having left hand threads therein, means driving the horizontally disposed shaft from the vertically disposed shaft, a dauber hub positioned against the face of the collar and having a positioning opening therein for receiving the pin extended from the collar, radially disposed daubers extended from said dauber hub, a stud having a gear thereon extended through the dauber hub and threaded with left hand threads into the said collar, a glue receptacle having open bearings in side walls thereof adjustably mounted on the stand, a shaft having a gear secured thereon with a nut having left hand threads journaled in the said open bearings of the receptacle, a glue carrying wheel mounted on the shaft in the glue receptacle and positioned whereby the surface thereof is in contact with faces of the daubers of the dauber hub, and adjustably mounted and constantly meshing gears positioned between and meshing with the gears of the dauber hub and glue carrying wheel whereby the distance between the wheel and faces of the daubers is adjustable, the gear ratio between the gears of the glue carrying wheel and dauber hub being such that the glue carrying wheel is rotated with the surface speed thereof less than the speed at which the daubers travel and whereby the contacting areas of the daubers on the surface of the wheel are in meeting relation.
4. In a gluing attachment for bottle crown cap assembling machines, the combination which comprises a stand, a horizontally disposed shaft having a collar with a pin extended therefrom on one end journaled in said stand, a dauber hub positioned against the face of the said collar and having a positioning opening therein for receiving the said pin extended from the collar, radially disposed daubers extended from said dauber hub, a stud having a gear thereon extended through the dauber hub and threaded into the said collar. a glue receptacle mounted on the said stand, a glue carrying wheel mounted in the said receptacle and positioned to contact the faces of the daubers of the dauber hub, a shaft having a gear thereon journaled in the said receptacle and on which the said glue carrying wheel is mounted, a gear housing extended around the gears of the said dauber hub stub and glue carrying wheel shaft, an arm pivotally mounted in said gear housing, meshing pinions journaled on the said arm and positioned with one of said pinions meshing with the gear of the dauber hub stud and the other with the gear of the glue carrying wheel shaft thereby providing means for retaining the gears in meshing relation with the distance between the dauber hub and glue carrying wheel adjustable and without changing the speed ratio between the dauber hub and glue carrying wheel shaft, and means for adjusting the position of the said receptacle on the stand.
