Description

Sept. 1, 1953 R. V. OLSON TORQUE RESISTING LOCKING LUG FOR THE CENTER TUBE OF SPOOL REEL. OR WARP BEAM Filed Nov. 24, 1951 BY RoberTV Olson flmfl ATTORNEY INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 1, 1953 TORQUE RESISTING LOCKING LUG FOR THE CENTER TUBE OF A SPOOL REEL R WARP BEAM Robert V. Olson, Attleboro, Mass., assignor to Mossberg Pressed Steel Corporation, a corporation of Massachusetts Application November 24, 1951, Serial No. 257,997 3 Claims. (01. 242-123) This invention relates to a spool reel or warp beam of the type in which there is a metal barrel with metal heads at the ends and a metal center tube.
Quite frequently because of the strains to which a spool or reel is subjected, there is a torsion existing between the center tube and the head tending to relatively rotate these parts, and frequently because of this torsion there will be a breakin or cracking between the junction of the head and the center tube at their junction.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an arrangement which will resist a torsional twisting of the head and the center tube.
Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement which will lock the center tube with reference to the head as it is put in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement so that there will be a strengthening of the center section of the head when this center tube is assembled with it.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and With reference to the drawings l0 and H designate generally heads at the opposite ends of a barrel I2 of the spool or reel shown in Figure 1, the junction being formed as at l3 between the flange l4 of the inner portion of the head and the end of the barrel. The outer portion of the head is provided with a central opening it about which there is an inwardly extending flange H which has its inner edge in a single plane at substantially right angles to the center axis of the barrel. The center tube I8 is of cylindrical form and extends through the openings It in the heads and has at a location spaced inwardly from its ends lugs I9 cut and deflected radially outwardly from its stock at a point inwardly from its end 2i]. 'l'his stock which is cut and outwardly deflected has an edge 21 which is also located in a plane at substantially right angles to the axis so that it will abut the end 22 of the flange I! and thus serve to locate this tube axially with reference to the head. Each of the lugs also is provided with a spur 23 which will be hardened by working of the tools to form it to such an extent that this spur may be driven particularly pointed out in the appended claims. 25 into the edge 2 0f the flange H to a p t Where I th accompanying drawings: there is a good abutment between the edges of ure 1 is a side elevation with a portion the flange and edges of the l gs which are in thereof in section, showing a spool or reel con- Planes at right angles to t axis of the spool. structed in accordance with this invention; The ends of the tube 0 a e he bent over or Figure 2 is a section on lines of Figure 3O flared outwardly as at SO as to lock the heads Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 1; and tubehh 215561117913!- Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation of a por- By arrangement relative turning of the tion of the center tube of a spool or reel showing a and tube are Supported o that such torsion modifi d form of which is used in this 1 Will not twist or break the joints between the ention; and head and. the tube.

2. A spool or reel as 'in claim 1 wherein the lugs have their axially extending edges converging toward each other.
3. A spool or reel as in claim 1 wherein the flange and. the spurs which extend into the flange are of metal.
