This invention comprises novel and useful improvements in a sleeve puller and more specifically pertains to a pulling implement or tool specifically adapted to removing sleeves from or inserting sleeves into bores or cylinders, and more particularly for pulling or replacing the cylinder sleeves of internal combustion engines.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a sleeve puller of an improved construction and characterized by its ease of installation or removal from the work with which it is to be used, for expeditiously removing sleeves, bushings or the like and replacing the same, particularly with reference to the cylinders of internal combustion engines.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a sleeve puller in conformity with the preceding object which shall be of extremely simple, inexpensive and lightweight construction, sturdy and dependable in use, highly efficient for the purposes intended, readily adjusted to accommodate different sizes of sleeves or bushings, and which shall be equally efiicient for withdrawing or inserting sleeves or bushings in their sleeve receiving cylinders.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a sleeve puller in conformity with the foregoing objects which shall be equally capable of attachment to crankshafts or other shafts for pulling or effecting an axial or endwise withdrawal of the same.
Yet another important object of the invention is to provide a sleeve puller as set forth in the foregoing objects which shall have an improved sleeve engaging attachment which shall be readily adjustable to accommodate different sizes of sleeves; which shall have a guided action in its engagement in a sleeve to facilitate the insertion of the attachment in the end of a sleeve as Well as to maintain and effect a firmer or more secure seating action of the attachment upon the end of a sleeve.
Yet another important object of the invention is to provide a sleeve puller as set forth in the above mentioned objects wherein the sleeve engaging attachment shall be rotatably carried by a pull rod upon anti-friction hearings in order to enhance the efficiency of operation of the device.
These, together with various ancillary features and objects of the invention, which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the present invention, preferred embodiments of which have been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the manner in which an embodiment of the device forming the subject of this invention may be operatively associated with the block of an internal combustion engine for removing a cylinder sleeve from the cylinder thereof;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 2-2 of Figure 1 and illustrating certain structural details of the thrust member forming a part of the invention;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view, parts being broken away and shown in section, showing the lower end of the thrust member and the manner in which a connector may be associated therewith for removing a crankshaft or other shaft by the aid of the implement;
Figure 4 is a perspective view similar to Figure 3 but disclosing a specific form of thrust plate mounted upon the pull rod for removing or installing certain specific sizes and shapes of sleeves, such as the cylinder liners for internal combustion engines of the Ford or Ford tractor type; and,
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring now more specifically to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, attention is directed first to Figures 1 and 2 wherein it will be seen that the principles of this invention have been illustrated in connection with an embodiment comprising a support, a pull rod and a thrust member. The support comprises a bar 10 which may be of any desired shape, size and character, and as illustrated may consist of an elongated bar of rectangular or square cross section, the same being provided with suitable screw-threaded bores l2 adjacent its extremities, these bores being vertically arranged and disposed to adiustably receive screwthreaded members M constituting supporting legs of the device. The legs 14 may be provided With squared or shouldered portions l6 at their upper extremities to facilitate the application of a wrench thereto for adjusting the legs, while the lower ends of the legs are preferably provided with foot members 18 of any desired character and which are adapted to abut and t i on the upper or lower surface of a portion of a cylinder block 20, this block having a plurality 0f cylinder bores or passages 22 therein in which are inserted the customary cylinder liners or sleeves 24.
The support bar I6 is provided with a plurality of vertically disposed, longitudinally spaced screw-threaded apertures 26 throughout its length, these apertures selectively receiving an externally threaded pull rod 28 provided with a headed portion 30 by means of which the same may be adjusted vertically with respect to the support bar I.
As illustrated in Figure 1, it will now be seen that the support may be mounted upon the top of a cylinder block 20 with the support bar l disposed transversely of and overlying one end of the cylinder bore :22, and with the pull rod 28 extending downwardly into the cylinder bore 22.
A thrust member is secured to the lower extremity of the pull rod 28 for engagement with the sleeve or other member to be pulled by the device. This thrust member may conveniently comprise an elongated,- depending body 32, which as shown in Figure 2 may be of rectangular cross-section, this body 32 at its upper extremity being integrally connected with a yoke member 34 having an upper portion 36 which is apertured to slidably receive the pull rod 28. An antifriction bearing assembly 38 of any known design embraces the lower extremity of the pull rod 28 and is positioned between the lower surface of the upper portion 36 of the yoke member 34, and a locking nut 49 which is received within the yoke member and is secured to the lower screw-threaded extremity of the pull rod 28. It will thus be seen that the anti-friction bearing assembly 38 will rotatably mount and retain the yoke 34 and the thrust member 32 upon the lower portion of the pull rod 28.
Intermediate its ends, the thrust member 32 is provided with a horizontally disposed bore or passage 42 through which is slidably received and mounted a cross rod 44. It is contemplated that a series of these cross rods of different lengths may be provided, the length of the cross rod being determined in accordance with the diameter of the sleeve or bushing which is to be pulled. a
A pair of hook members are adjustably mounted upon the extremities of the cross rod 44 for seating engagement with the end of a sleeve to be pulled by the device. These hook members preferably comprise a pair of blocks 46 which may be of any desired shape, they being illustrated as of square cross section, and being provided with horizontally disposed bores 48 therein for slidably receiving the cross rod 44. Set screws or the like 50 are provided whereby the blocks may be secured in laterally spaced and adjusted position upon the cross rod 44.
The outer extremities of these blocks 46 are of arcuate shape as indicated at 52 in Figure 2, and are adapted to underlie the adjacent extremity of the sleeve 24, but are intended to lie within the inner surface of the sleeve receiving cylinder 22 as shown clearly in Figures 1 and 2.
The top surface of the blocks 46 are preferably disposed in the same plane and are flat and are adapted to abut the adjacent edge of the sleeve 24.
A pair of guide brackets are adjustably secured upon this flat upper surface of the blocks 46 as shown in Figures 1 and 2. These guide brackets preferably comprise L-shaped members having a flat base 54 slidably received upon the upper surface of the blocks 46, together with an upstanding arcuate flange 56 which is adapted to abut the inner surface of the sleeve 24. Preferably, the upper edge of the upstanding flange 4 is slightly beveled as at 56, see Figure 1, in order to facilitate and guide the insertion of the flanges within the sleeves 24.
The base 54 is longitudinally slotted as at 60 and a clamping bolt 62 extends through the slot and is screw threadedly engaged to the upper portion of the block 46 for permitting longitudinal adjustment of the guide members and looking the same in adjusted positions.
The lowermost extremity of the member 32 is provided with an enlarged boss 64 which is internally bored and screw threaded as at 66 for the reception of the upper, screw threaded extremity 68 of a connecting member II having a lower screw threaded extremity 12. When it is desired to utilize the device to pull crankshafts or other shafts, the member I0 is applied to the lower end of the thrust member 32 by engaging the portion 68 in the bore 66, and the screw threaded extremity 12 will then be engaged in a conventional internally threaded axial recess in the end. of a crankshaft or other shaft, whereby upon manipulating the pull rod 28, the shaft may be withdrawn from its mounting.
In use, the support member may be either mounted upon the top of a motor block, or upon the bottom of the same, the pull rod 28 extended through the cylinder, and the thrust member appropriately engaged with one extremity of a sleeve which may then be withdrawn from or inserted into the block and the cylinder 22 thereof as may be desired.
It should be noted that the legs [4 are adjustable thereby permitting not only convenient positioning of the support bar H), but if desired may serve as an additional thrust producing member. The plurality of bores 26 facilitate convenient positioning of the support as well as of the pull rod 28 and the thrust member carried thereby. The thrust member itself being rotatably mounted upon the end of the pull rod may obtain a secure engagement with the sleeve or member to be pulled despite rotation of the pull rod.
In addition to the above described construction, the present invention contemplates the use of a specific thrust plate for withdrawing certain sleeves such as the cylinder liners or sleeves of such well known constructions and engines as the Ford car or tractor engines. As shown in Figures 4 and 5, these thrust plates may consist of a fiat plate or disk having a hub portion 14 which is apertured as at 16 for reception of a fastening bolt 18 whereby the hub may be secured to the above described enlargement or boss 64, in the screw-threaded recess 66 of the same by the bolt 18. From the hub 14 there extend a plurality of radially disposed arms 60, any suitable number of which such as three may be provided, these arms at their outer extremities terminating in arcuately shaped shouldered recesses 82 in the upper surfaces forming seats for receiving the adjacent ends of cylinders 24, it being noted that these shouldered recesses include arcuate vertical guide edges 84 which engage the inner surface of sleeves 24, and with arcuate horizontal thrust surfaces 86 which engage and thrust against the ends of the sleeves 24. The operation of this form of the invention is substantially identical with that previously set forth and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying 5 drawings, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A sleeve puller comprising a support, a pull rod carried by said support for insertion through a sleeve receiving bore, a thrust member mounted on said rod for engaging one extremity of a sleeve, said thrust member comprising a body depending from said pull rod and having a transverse aperture, a cross rod slidably received in said transverse aperture, sleeve engaging hooks on said cross rod, said hooks comprising blocks slidably and adjustably secured upon said cross rod, said blocks having rounded outer ex- 6 tremities underlying the end of a sleeve and a fiat thrust surface for abutting engagement with the end of a sleeve, said blocks having guide brackets adjustably mounted thereon, said 5 brackets having upstanding arcuate flanges for engaging the inside surface of a sleeve.
